WILTSHIRE avoided defeat in the Minor Counties Championship Western Division for the first time this season – but were left kicking their heels as the wet weather decimated their clash with Wales.

The rain meant that just over 60 overs were played on the second day at Trowbridge, with the elements accounting for both the first and final days of Wiltshire’s first draw of the season.

Neil Shardlow’s side claimed eight bonus points for bowling out their opponents but the county chief was left frustrated by the weather denying his side a complete encounter.

“It was a little bit disappointing that the weather ruined the game but there was nothing that either side could do about it,” said Wiltshire team boss Shardlow.

“The rain was pretty bad all day in Trowbridge on Saturday and the club’s game was called off before it affected the county game.

“Obviously, we just want to play cricket because a lot of people travel a long way to be involved but there was a lot more rain on Monday evening and ultimately, it was unplayable.”

Jack Murphy hit 69 for Wales on Sunday but not before their first three wickets fell without a single run on the board.

Wiltshire bowler Tahir Afridi filled his boots as the visitors suffered a collapse, claiming six wickets for 37 runs, whilst Jake Roberts took 2-33 as Wales were skittled for 128 in just over 50 overs.

However, the hosts also struggled with the bat, losing their first six wickets for just nine runs as Aneurin Norman (3-6) and Murphy (3-17) piled on the pressure.

But with Steve Bullen (5*) and Tom Bowler (9*) at the crease, the final day never got under way.
