In a Spin: Liam Dawson's Cricket column
Just call me the Waterboy
Today is the last day of the second team's three day game at Surrey and I've been down to open the batting.
Hampshire see me as a top order batsman while, when I go away with the England U19 I was used as a bowler.
I have to adapt when I play for either side but opening the batting gives me a good opportunity to do well and I can push for the first team.
It's my first game back with the second team and I haven't started a game for them since last August.
The changing rooms are really small as well, so it's quite difficult for 13 of us to change and people can get on each other's nerves.
It's different from last week when I was the 12th man for the first team at Yorkshire.
I made my County Championship debut at Yorkshire last year but this year I felt a bit like Adam Sandler in his film the Waterboy last week.
Being 12th man I was filling up the water bottles and Poweraid bottles and running them out when the wickets fell.
I did get 30 overs play though because Shane Bond got injured and I got a catch which was pretty good as well.
But, for most of the time, I was sat in the changing room and then running the drinks out.
I had to be prepared though. It is one of those things you have to do and you have to help each other out.
If I was fielding then I would quite like a 12th man to fill up my drinks and bring them out to me.
But we lost the game which meant we were all really disappointed, the last day was a nightmare and everyone was really quiet in the dressing room.
On another note, I was really disappointed to see Chippenham Town lose in the play-offs last night.
I've only made one game this season, when they beat Merthyr 3-1 in March, but it was a good game and hopefully they can do it next year.
