Corsham's 98 game run is ended

Premier Division

Westbury Rangers A are the new leaders after the Meadow Lane side bought an end to Corsham Centre's 98 match unbeaten League run, which stretched back to April 2003.

The Centre had almost a full strength side available for their trip to Westbury with only manager Pete Ralph being the only noticeable absentee. Shaun Gardiner's Westbury side were without Ross Parker and Pete Ayton, but for the first time in six attempts Rangers were able to get the better of their opponents who they defeated 2-1.

The statistics would show that the Centre out numbered Rangers in efforts at goal but it was in the column that really matters that Rangers did the damage and in particular Marc Lanfear who scored both of the goals.

Lanfear struck in the first half to give Rangers the lead on the half hour mark and when he made it 2-0 15 minutes from time he woke up the sleeping giant who in spite of having the majority of the second half couldn't find away past Rangers young keeper Nathan Taylor who produced one memorable save to deny Tim Jefferies.

Rangers had to withstand a late onslaught from the Centre as they looked to get back in the game and had it not been for the determination of Rangers defence led by Dave and Tom Whyte and Mark Young they might have done so before Ross Lye struck in the 85th minute.

The Centre threw everything at Rangers in the hope of claiming a draw but, Rangers rearguard stood strong for Rangers to hold out for a famous victory which could now open up the race for this seasons Premier division title.

Box Rovers lost for the first time this season and their 5-2 defeat at the hands of Biddestone Social moved the victors up to second place in the standings.

Rovers worked hard for the first 30 minute and took the lead though Jamie Harrison, whose goal was soon cancelled out by Jamie Lyons who chased a long ball from Biddy's stand-in keeper Ryan Trowbridge.

Rob Pocock scrambled the ball home on 38 minutes to give Biddestone a 2-1 half time lead. Lyons found the target again on 64 minutes when volleyed home a John O'Meara cross and four minutes later a one-two with O'Meara on the halfway line led to Lyons racing clear and completing his hat trick.

Jamie Harrison pulled a goal back for Rovers four minutes from time but their was still time for Lyons to produce a carbon copy of his third goal as he seal a fine personal display with his fourth of the game two minutes from time to earn Biddestone a third successive win.

For the second week in succession, a rejuvenated Holt side dominated a game many expected would be a forgone conclusion and end in defeat for the villagers. Last seasons runners-up Winsley could find no answer to the relentless pressure from the young Holt outfit who won 5-3.

Despite conceding a goal in the first minute to Jamie Higdon it was the visitors who took control of the game and equalised through their tenacious new striker Rob O'Harrow.

Holt took the lead with a precision finish from Simon Brookes but Winsley equalised almost immediately when Dan Kovacs bundled the ball and Holt's into the back of the net.

More drama was to follow as O'Harrow was brought down in full view of the referee. The resulting penalty was calmly slotted into net by O'Harrow himself.

The half-time whistle was greeted with relief by an outplayed, out thought, out manoeuvred Winsley team.

The second half started with the appearance of Winsley star man, Frome Town ace Dean Ranger whose presence gave the home side a much needed boost and they soon equalised a second time again with Kovacs making his mark.

With the scores level, Holt's player manager Stuart Faint played his joker or rather his Ace in the pack, as he brought on Holt's star turn Tom Pang.

The pressure on the ageing Winsley defence was upped several notches as wave after wave of Holt pressure finally told, the inevitable goal came after some intricate play involving the sublime Ron Frost and Pang which the striker finished by stabbing home. Winsley then conceded a penalty and worse, a red card for Jamie Higdon for deliberate handball, O'Harrow duly fired the spot kick straight at the fortuitous Winsley keeper.

With the advantage of the extra man Holt scored a fifth with Pang scoring his second of the game.

North Star A had their game against Miller Sports won by half time as they had built up a four-nil lead, Miller will claim the satisfaction of drawing the second period which ended with each team scoring a goal each with Millers coming from Steve Cleverly. Mark Sharrett and Mark Dolman had scored first half doubles for the Star with Steve Barrett scoring their second half effort which saw a final result of 5-1 in favour of the Star.

Colerne picked up their first win since they arrived in the top flight, Colerne hosted Bradford News and clinched both points thanks to a 4-1 victory. Colerne had the best possible start when Dave Leask scored his first goal for the club after three minutes. The Newsmen fashioned an equaliser which was scored by Jamie Davis but a far post volley from Charlie Spirrell regain Colerne the advantage going into the break.

Colerne moved further ahead when Ian Tasker notched his first goal for the club and a 20 yard free kick from Charlie Spirrell completed the scoring.

A very depleted Maud Heath Sports side visited the Dog & Fox Ashley and they returned to Calne empty handed after Clive Bancroft's team managed a 3-0 success. Russell Whatley netted on 20 minutes, Steve Roddy hit the net in the 65th minutes and substitute Matthew Lay scored his first ever goal for the Dog late on to make certain of the Bradfordians first win of the season.
