Bad Friday for battling Chippenham
Merthyr Tydfil 2 Chippenham Town 0

Chippenham Town slipped to a lacklustre defeat at Merthyr Tydfill where they were out muscled by the physical Welshmen.

Craig Stiens' strike a minute before half time gave resolute Merthyr a priceless lead in their battle to avoid a relegation battle.

Substitute Mike Jones scrambled in a late second for the hosts to make it a day to forget for the bedraggled Bluebirds.

Manager Adie Mings recalled Kye Holly in favour of Matt Groves and Luke Prince made his debut 24 hours after signing from Salisbury on loan with Luke Gullick dropped to the bench.

Immediately Merthyr's lowly postioin of 15th was belied as they laid siege to Chippenham's goal with a series of high balls and physical challenges.

Stiens thought he had put his side 1-0 up after he headed over the stranded Snoddy but was rightly ruled offside before the Bluebirds should have taken the lead on 15 minutes.

But Kevin Halliday's delicious cross was glanced onto the inside of the post by the unmarked Scott Lye.

The Bluebirds were looking rattled by the physical Merthyr, epitomised by Rewbury's rash challenge on Halliday, which earned the Martyrs' man a yellow and the Chippenham left back lenghty treatment.

But, with their feathers ruffled the Bluebirds could have taken the lead on 41 minutes when Morris produced a splendid reflex save to stop Darren Davies' header from flying in from Holly's free kick.

Matthew Harris, who was sent off in Chippenham's 3-1 win over Merthyr two weeks ago, then powered a header over as the half edged towards a close.

But, on the stroke of half time, the hosts took the lead in a moment Snoddy will want to forget.

Warton's shot on the turn looked to be going wide by the 22-year-old stopper failed to hold it and the ball spilled to Stiens who made no mistake from the angle.

Half time: Merthyr Tydfil 1-0 Chippenham Town.

The Bluebirds failed to impose themselves straight after the break and Stiens planted a free header just wide.

But slowly the visitors gained a foot hold as Seavill shot across the face of goal and half time substitute Luke Gullick, on for the injured Kye Holly, lashed wide with just Morris to beat.

The hosts were holding firm and with time running out the Bluebirds were struggling for any initative or spark as Stiens was denied by Snoddy's low save with 20 minutes remaining.

Mings' men couldn't find any momentum on a boggy pitch but, with the lightweight Seavill, David Pratt and Gullick, being outmuscled it was hardly surprising.

Stiens should have put the game out of Chippenham's reach when he raced clear but his shot rolled wide on 78 minutes.

Amid a torrential downpour the Bluebirds were huffing and puffing but failing to make any headway and they were dumped out of the game three minutes from time.

Davies swung in a free kick from the left and substitute Mike Jones swivelled on the loose ball to poke under Snoddy from five yards.

Chippenham Town: Snoddy, Adams, Halliday, Price, McEntegart, Harvey (c), Lye, Holly (Gullick, 45), Allison, Seavill, Prince (Pratt, 60).
