We huffed and puffed a little in the first half against Brackley Town on Saturday but it was nice to finish the season at home with a win.
I’m here saying it again but we missed a couple of chances in the first half and were then punished by one mistake after a little bit of indecisiveness.
I asked them to raise the tempo at half-time and ask questions of their defence, which we knew wasn’t the strongest. If we were able to get at them I thought we would score goals and that’s what we did.
Lewis Powell came off the bench and showed us he is a natural goalscorer. It’s a shame he got injured when he did this season because, as you’ve seen, he had one chance and scored it. If we can get him fit I really do believe he will score goals.
He’s a good lad and has worked really hard to get back into the team so hopefully he can finish the season on a high for us.
We took Steve Casey off at half-time as a precaution because he had a hamstring strain and he is a doubt for the Swindon Supermarine game on Saturday.
Forest Green phoned us on Saturday morning to ask for Marcus Palmer which is why he didn’t play against Brackley, and it’s unlikely he’ll be available this week.
However James Martin will return after a long-standing family engagement.
Unfortunately Iain Sercombe is no longer with the club. He contacted the club to let us know he can’t commit his time because of university and work issues.
He was coming down and playing for free though just because he enjoyed his football with us and his time and effort was much appreciated.
I’m pleased David Pratt picked up the supporters’ player of the season award.
He has taken his knocks along the way and played through them so I’m glad you’ve recognised his contributions to the team. I’m also happy for Dave himself because off the pitch he’s a fantastic person to work with.
Those of you at the Brackley game will have also heard the announcement that the management team have agreed to stay on for next season as well.
We all want to try and achieve something at this club. The current economic climate means it will be difficult and we will have to make changes but we want to drive the club forward.
