THE main news surrounding the club this week is the investigation by the Southern League into us allegedly fielding an ineligible player, but I am writing this column before a verdict has been reached so I can’t comment too much on that for the time being.
In terms of matters on the pitch, our results in March have meant achieving a play-off place is now out of our hands but that is not a reason to give up.
We’ve got to keep plugging away and hope we can do enough, and other results go for us, so we can sneak into them through the back door.
That process begins when we host Rugby Town on Saturday, who we beat 1-0 way back in August.
We had them watched again when they played at Gloucester recently and we have seen they are a fit, young side who work very hard and tend to play five in midfield away from home, so it is not going to be easy.
Their lad up front, David Kolodynski, is the top scorer in the Southern League this season with 20 goals and he will cause us problems as he has done to every other team.
When we played them earlier in the season he was on the right of midfield but he is quick and skillful and will be a threat.
The good news is that Ross Adams may be back in the squad after finishing his suspension although he has been carrying a knock on his knee, so we will have to wait and see if he is available.
Also on the injury front, Ashley Williams has been told his ribs are bruised rather than cracked. He will still be out for another week or two but we’re pleased it isn’t as serious as we first thought, although Luke Gullick has impressed Gary Kemp and I in the last two games when we’ve asked him to play there.
We also travel to Devon to play Tiverton on Monday which has to be the worst bit of scheduling possible and yet it seems to crop up every year.
There is always a bit of added spice in that game and we are two teams in the similar position of needing to win every game in the hope of getting a play-off spot so it is really do-or-die in that respect.
We beat them on New Year’s Day at home 1-0 so I’m sure they’ll be out for a bit of revenge on Monday, and again we know just how difficult that will be.
