We need a new front man before the next game

I’M not sure the Gazette would allow me to print what I’d like to say after Tuesday night’s defeat to Oxford City.

It was an awful, spineless performance where we have paid the price for poor finishing and not killing sides off when we are on top of them.

We went a goal down early on but in the second half I expected the lads to come out and have a go but they lost their shape, stopped passing the ball and were poor all round.

What it ultimately comes down to is that I need to find a new striker between now and the weekend so I will have to start making some phone calls.

I’ve been talking about wasted chances since September and it can’t keep happening.

Even in the 5-0 win over Banbury we should have been out of sight within the first 20 minutes and the same thing happened against Hemel.

We end up drawing or losing crucial games because we aren’t finding the back of the net and we would have have beaten Oxford had we been able to.

I took David Pratt off with 20 minutes to go because he just wasn’t having a good day at the office. His link-up play was poor and he wasn’t holding things up.

We know how good he is but it wasn’t his night and I thought it best to get someone else on and go from there.

I fear this result could be very damaging in the context of the season because we had a chance to put ourselves third or fourth in the table but instead we find ourselves in eighth.

Maybe we’ve simply got a few players who don’t seem to rise to the occasion on a Tuesday evening. It’s happened too many times this season where we fall short on midweek games.

Beating Oxford on Tuesday would have also done a good job of putting real pressure on the leaders Farnborough when they come to town on Saturday.

It was always a game we wanted to get three points from but now the onus is really on us to go out there and get the win.

Swindon Supermarine at home next Tuesday is also a massive game and if we can perform in those games we will have given ourselves another chance of finishing in the top five this season.
