More than 200 people have already entered the revived Chippenham Half Marathon.
The Chippenham Harriers event, which is being backed by the Gazette, takes place on Sunday, September 14, the same day as the Bristol Half Marathon, leading to fears numbers could be lower than hoped.
But, with entries flowing in, race secretary Ann Slator believes their decision to revive the event after a 12-year break has been vindicated.
She said: "I know quite a few local running clubs are going to apply because they would prefer to do a smaller half. The race has not been held for a while and we have got people out there who run a little bit.
"So, because there is a half happening on their home patch, they will come out and give it a go. In that respect we haven't made a mistake holding it on the same day as Bristol."
Ms Slater is delighted with the numbers who have already signed up for the 13.2 mile run.
Solicitors Goughs and brake manufacturer Knorr-Bremse are sponsoring the race with another local sponsor due to be announced this month.
"I didn't know what to expect but we are really pleased," said Ms Slator.
"Because it is a reasonably flat course it is ideal for personal bests or those who are beginners. There are no nasty hills which can really take an affect on the runners."
