LOCAL clubs Christie Miller and Clarrie Dunbar both recorded excellent wins on the penultimate weekend of competitive action in the central region of the Wessex League.

The Millermen came out on top in a tight match against St Andrews (Weston-Super-Mare) 88-81 despite having a few players unavailable owing to a clash with the Loddon Vale Open singles tournament.

Christie shared rink honours 2-2 but two strong performances, at home in Melksham by Nigel Price’s foursome and Alfie Maslen’s away quartet, who won their games by 30 and seven shots respectively, tipped the scales overall in Miller’s favour.

Miller collected four points for the rink wins and eight for the 88-81 shot success to move up to fourth spot in the table.

Last season’s overall Wessex League champions, Clarrie Dunbar, virtually booked their place in the play-offs despite still having a game in hand over leaders Bristol.

They blitzed Purnell (Paulton) with a comprehensive 112-58 win as they whitewashed the north Somerset side to take all 16 points on offer.

This was a superb performance as Clarrie were short of several of their regular Wessex players owing to Area 16 national competition finals being staged at Swindon Westlecot IBC.

Top rink honours went to Dale Taylor’s away foursome and the home Andy Colebrooke quartet, who notched 25 and 24 shot wins respectively.

The 16 points maintained Dunbar’s unbeaten record and sets-up a last day decider for central top spot against Bristol on Sunday.

Prior to that Clarrie face basement club North Wilts on Saturday.
