NORTH WILTS ladies scored a double in national team competitions in the Yetton Trophy and Mason Trophy last weekend.

Winners nine years ago and losing finalists last season in the Yetton Trophy, the women’s indoor inter-club team championship, North Wilts are on track for another fine run after recording a comprehensive 76-44 fourth-round victory over MidGlos last Saturday, their opponents conceding at the three-quarter mark when 32 shots adrift.

The Chippenham-based side took the honours on both home rinks with Fizz Mace’s foursome winning by 19 shots while Jean Collier’s quartet recorded a six-shot success.

In Gloucester, skip Alex Jacobs registered a handsome 14-shot success but North Wilts missed out on a clean sweep as Sue Cooke’s rink lost by seven shots.

North Wilts were in awesome form storming into a 39-9 lead overall after only five ends and had increased the advantage to 61-25 after 10.

Their opponents trailed 44-76 after 15 ends and decided to wave the white flag and concede the one-sided fourth-round tie despite there still being 24 ends across the board to be played.

High-flying North Wilts progressed to round five and the last 16 of the competition against Berkside side Rivermead (Reading) after the festive break on January 6 (10am).

The Mason Trophy, ladies Over 60 double rinks, at the weekend produced a mixed set of results with the A team winning their second round tie against Clevedon 49-31 but the B team being edged out in theirs by a single shot on the last end losing 28-27 to Thornbury.

At Westcroft, the home rink led by Alex Jacobs were always ahead in their game and won their match 31-12. However, Jean Collier’s rink just missed out in Cleveland in a close game losing by one shot 18-19.

North Wilts A team now take a break from competitive action until January 19 next year when they are scheduled to face neighbours Christie Miller in round three. The local derby is set for a 10am start.

In the Vivienne Trophy, North Wilts received a round one bye so do not start in the competition until January 11 when they are due to face Taunton Deane in round two.

THE men’s and ladies Champion of Champions singles have reached the Area final stages.

North Wilts representative in the ladies section Sue Cooke lost narrowly 21-20 in the Area 16 semi-final to England international Stefanie Branfield.

Branfield, from Clevedon, now faces Julie Morgan in the Area 16 final with a place in the last 16 at Hayling Island awaiting the winner.

In the men’s section, North Wilts representative Bob George went out early losing 21-16 to Andy Moore (Christie Miller).

Moore then lost in the next round 21-18 to Clarrie Dunbar’s Graham Shadwell who went on to win the Area 16 title and then beat England international and world ranked number six Rob Paxton from Taunton Deane 21-17 the Area 17 winner, in the inter-area shoot-out to qualify for the last 16 at Hayling Island at the end of January next year.

LOOKING to bounce back after two heavy defeats are North Wilts men in the central region of the Wessex League.

They opened with a win over Purnell 86-76 but then crashed to 97-54 and 105-58 defeats at the hands of St Andrews (Weston-Super-Mare) and neighbours Christie Miller respectively.

North Wilts currently lie seventh in the nine team central table on 15 points, 13 above basement club Thornbury and nine ahead of eighth placed Nailsea who have lost all three games to date and whom are the opponents for North Wilts on Sunday (10am).
