GRAHAM Shadwell and Marcia Hartley won the prestigious men’s and ladies’ singles titles at the Clarrie Dunbar Club Competitions finals last weekend, writes DAVE EATON.

Both players retained their titles, Shadwell beating Keith Bailey in the final 21-10 and Hartley defeating Thelma Bailey 21-4.

Shadwell and Hartley will now represent Clarrie in the national Champion of Champions competition next season.

Shadwell has previously won the national crown twice before in 2005 and 2013.

Normally the club competitions weekend would mark the end of the winter season at Dunbar, but this winter season has been extended by an extra week because the Clarrie Dunbar team have reached the final stages (last four) of the Top Club national mixed competition being held tomorrow (Saturday) in Yorkshire at York and District Indoor Bowls Club.

In tomorrow’s semi-final starting at 10am Clarrie face the 2015 champions Spalding from Lincolnshire, the winner then competing at 2pm against the winner of other semi between Kingsthorpe (Northamptonshire) and 2016 Champions Swale (Kent) for the title.

Last season Dunbar reached a national semi-final in a team event for the very first time but missed out in the Egham Trophy semis to Kent side Swale (Sittingbourne).

They will be hoping to add to the two individual national titles that Shadwell has won in the Champion of Champions competition in 2005 and four years ago.

The club has already won the men’s overall Wessex League title as well as the men’s Somerset County League, Optika Top Nine, County Triples, County Fours, as well as having had seven qualifiers for national finals at Melton and Nottingham and reaching the quarter-finals of the men’s Denny Cup and mixed Egham Trophy, both national inter-club championship competitions.

Clarrie Dunbar have announced their side for the Top Club semi-final. It shows one change to the team picked for the Torquay United game - Jo Dunford coming in for Jeanette Wheeler in the ladies two wood singles.
