AFTER seeing their 100 per cent unbeaten record in national team competitions this season broken when their men lost to Bristol in the Over 60s inter club double rinks, Clarrie Dunbar enjoyed a quiet week on the national front.

However, the men turned their attentions to the Wessex League regional competition and second block of fixtures in the Central section and bounced back with aplomb.

They thrashed local rivals North Wilts 115-34, winning on all four rinks and white washing them to collect a maximum 16 points and edge past Thornbury at the top of the table.

Clarrie led from the off and were 33-13 up overall at five ends, 70-20 ahead at halfway, a colossal 98-27 up at 15 and finally won 115-34.

Russell Francis’ home rink at Standerwick and Keith Bailey’s away rink in Chippenham led the way, both recording 29-shot winning margins.

Christie Miller led overall for practically the whole of their Central region match against Thornbury but were reeled in over the last three ends and finished on the wrong end of a 76-69 scoreline.

They led 20-19 at five ends, had moved 44-36 up at 10 ends but only led 63-61 at 15 ends before conceding 40 shots and only scoring 25 over the last three ends to lose overall by seven shots.

Miller’s away skips, Paul Macdonald and Tom Newman, both led their rinks to victory by five and four-shot margins respectively but the Millermen surprisingly lost both matches in Melksham, which proved decisive in the final analysis.

FOUR teams from Clarrie Dunbar face a hectic three days of competition in national events.

The ladies Mason Trophy side get the ball rolling in the Over 60s double rinks competition when they meet Bristol in the second round.

Then both Clarrie’s men’s and ladies teams contest Denny Cup and Yetton Trophy fourth round ties against MidGlos and North Wilts respectively.

And to round-off an important weekend for Clarrie and their hopes of national team glory, the mixed team play Swindon Westlecot in a fourth round Egham Trophy tie.
