ALEX Jacobs’ brilliant run in the ladies national indoor championships and competitions this season has continued over the past week.

The North Wilts star bowler is still running in all six of the national events that she entered in Area 30 in the current campaign - ladies singles, pairs, triples and fours championships plus champion of champions and Over 50s two wood triples competitions.

Jacobs had already won the Area 30 section in the national champion of champions competition as well as the inter-area final and qualified for the last 16 and final stages at Hayling Island at the end of January.

In the other ladies competition for the Over 50s two wood triples she had already qualified with Jean Collier and Sue for the area final and a meeting with Thornbury led by Cynthia Winter-Alsop on January 17.

Over the past week or so Jacobs has added to that success with four semi-final victories in the ladies championship so is now through to another five Area 30 finals.

Jacobs beat Janet Hardie 21-17 in the singles semi-finals and together with Sue Cooke in the area pairs semis with a late surge from only 20-18 ahead beat Ann Jones and Marcia Hartley (Clarrie Dunbar) 30-20.

In the fours Area 30 semi-finals Irene Button, Jean Collier, Cooke and skip Jacobs defeated Clevedon easily 23-9 to book a final spot and Jacobs followed up minus Collier in the triples semis with a 28-10 win over Ruth Haines, Ann Jones and Marcia Hartley (Clarrie Dunbar).

Two of the dates for Area 30 championship finals have been arranged.

Jacobs triples team will play at Clevedon against Jacqui Branfield, Laura Holden and Stefanie Branfield on January 24 while a day earlier Jacobs’ fours team play at home in the area final against the Bristol quartet of Kath Bayly, Ros Constant, Sue Osborne and Val Molton.

In both instances the winners of the triples and fours finals move forward to the inter-area final against the Area 29 winners.

North Wilts women’s fine run in ladies national team competitions came to an end on Monday on the green at Taunton Deane.

Despite winning the home leg in the Mason Trophy, Over 60s double rink, they struggled in the away leg and went out 44-30 on aggregate.

After a tight opening to their game, 3-3 at five ends and 9-8 at ten, the home rink of Ann Roberts-Phare, Janet Hardie, Jean Collier and Fizz Mace edged away to a 20-14 win at 21 ends.

However, it was a different tale in Taunton Deane for the rink of Norma Rowden, Jane Taylor, Irene Button and Sue Cooke.

They were 7-2 down at five and 17-5 adrift at halfway. They never recovered to trail 21-7 at 15 and finally lost their away leg 30-10.

This was a first national team defeat for the ladies section this season at North Wilts, however, they will be looking for better fortunes in the next week when they compete in two other ladies national team competitions.

They will be seeking revenge when they meet Taunton Deane in the fourth round (last 32) of the Yetton Trophy, national inter-club four rinks match with two games at home and two away this Saturday.

While Taunton Deane is the neutral venue next Thursday, January 21, for the Vivienne Trophy, national inter-club four triples matches third round (last 16) tie between North Wilts and Torbay.

Meanwhile men’s national championships and competitions in Area 30 are finally beginning to warm-up and approach the boil.

North Wilts’ player Dave Williams produced a splendid performance in the Area 30 singles quarter-finals to demolish Clarrie Dunbar’s Craig Hadfield-Doughty 21-3 and book a semi-final spot against Westcroft former teammate Wayne Snook (now Christie Miller).

However, Williams and his triples and fours teams both went out in the quarter-finals to Andy Moore (C Miller) 24-11 and 15-11 respectively.

However, Williams (three) together with lead Bob George, Maurice Byrom( two) and Mal Curtis (skip) are due to play Purnell (Paulton) led by Don Dart in the Area 30 final in the Over 60s fours by Sunday.
