GRAHAM Shadwell failed to add to his week one bronze medal in the pairs at the Atlantic Games Bowls Championships at the Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos, Cyprus, writes DAVE EATON.

Last week in the final events representing England in the fours alongside Louis Ridout (Devon) and Berkshire duo Andy Knapper and Robert Newman they missed out on a play-offs spots for medals on shots difference.

After six matches England were locked together with Scotland (+101) and Wales (+47) at the head of their group with 15 points from five wins but in third spot as they were only + 44, Jersey were back in fourth on 12 pts (+48).

However, the final set of group matches on day 12 changed everything. Wales beat Scotland 18-14 to snatch top spot while Jersey caused a big surprise with an 18-9 win over England to pip Shadwell & co. for third spot on shots difference and a place in the play-offs.

Jersey caused an even bigger shock defeating Zimbabwe in the quarter-finals, then group two winners Ireland 16-14 in the semi-finals and capping a great week for the Channel Islands side with a narrow 15-14 victory in the fours final over Scotland.

Shadwell and co may have just missed out in the fours group stages by finishing fourth, but still booked England a slot in next year’s world championships in Christchurch, New Zealand in the men’s fours by finishing in the top five in their group.

Meanwhile Clarrie Dunbar’s hopes of national team success in the Denny Cup, top men’s inter-club competition, are over for another indoor season.

After victories over Thornbury (84-52), Christie Miller (82-62) and Bristol (79-78) they were beaten in round four last Saturday 83-70 by MidGlos.

The Brockworth, Gloucester side progress to the last 16 (round five) and a date with Whiteknights (Reading).
