CLARRIE DUNBAR bounced back superbly after their disappointments the previous weekend against North Wilts and Bristol to register a victorious treble in national team competitions over the same clubs.

In the space of 48 hours, they gained sweet revenge over North Wilts in two mixed competitions, Top Club and Egham.

While in between, Clarrie’s men edged a tense battle against Bristol to win by one shot in the Denny Cup.

Dunbar dominated the national mixed Top Club tie against North Wilts winning four of the five disciplines - ladies and men’s two wood singles, mixed pairs and mixed fours, only missing out in the mixed triples to collect 12 of the 16 points on offer. They now face Purnell in January in round three.

Then in the mixed Egham Trophy, Clarrie won on three of the four rinks to beat North Wilts 97-75 and now play St Andrews (WSM) in round four on December 20.

THE MEN at Clarrie and Bristol have been involved in some classic team confrontations in recent seasons and the latest clash between the two clubs in the Denny Cup lived up to its billing.

Clarrie made a flying start and led 23-10 after five ends. However, by 10 ends Bristol hit back to take control and still led 60-56 after 15 ends.

Back came Clarrie in the charge to the finishing line but they finally lost 43-39 in the home tie. However, the two away rinks turned things around to triumph 40-35 and give Clarrie a 79-78 victory and a place in the fourth round against MidGlos (Brockworth, Gloucester) on December 12.

CHRISTIE MILLER’S last chance of success in a national team competition is over for this indoor season after they lost at home to Purnell (Paulton, Somerset) in the second round of the mixed Top Club competition.

Christie only took the honours in the mixed triples event - Sheila Noyce, Mike Savin and Paul Macdonald triumphing 21-17 – but lost in the other four disciplines.

THIS SUNDAY sees the third round of matches in the central section of the Wessex League being staged.

Christie Miller face Thournbury, while holders Clarrie Dunbar are up against basement club North Wilts as they seek to regain top spot from Bristol.

GRAHAM Shadwell misses all of Clarrie Dunbar’s national and regional indoor team events over the next fortnight.

The Trowbridge player is away in Cyprus representing England in the 2015 Atlantic Games, an outdoor lawn green bowls competition.

Shadwell team’s up with Devon’s Louis Ridout in this week’s pairs and in the fours next week he lines-up at three with Ridout (lead) and Berkshire duo Andy Knapper (two) and Robert Newman (skip).

Shadwell is no stranger to the Atlantic Games, having claimed a gold medal for England in the triples in 2011 with Somerset’s John Hick and Devon’s Jamie Chestney.

However, he and Ridout will definitely need a change in fortunes if they are to push for a place in the play-offs and the hope of a medal this weekend in the pairs event.

Drawn in a nine-team group one they went down on day one in their opening game to the renowned Scottish duo of Paul Foster MBE and Alex Marshall MBE in a tight game 19-17. However, Shadwell and Ridout followed it up with a 15-12 success over Zimbabwe.

Day two saw Ridout and Shadwell thrash Isle of Man 32-6, however, in their second game of the day they suffered a shock 18-15 loss to lowly Kenya.

On day three the English pairing had a bye but did not play in the evening session against Cyprus as scheduled, with play being abandoned for the day owing to adverse weather conditions.

So after three days Ridout and Shadwell, who need a top-two placing to reach the pairs play-offs together with the top two in group two, lie in fourth spot in group one on four points. Scotland head the group on eights from four games alongside Spain with four wins from four also.

Shadwell and Ridout’s remaining matches are against Cyprus, basement team Argentina, high-flying Spain and South Africa.
