ALEX Jacobs bids to become the first Wiltshire bowler to book a place in a national indoor final this season this weekend.

After 21-15 and 21-12 victories over Pauline Dando (Purnell, Paulton) and Bev Lilley (Christie Miller, Melksham) respectively in the quarter and semi-finals of the Champion of Champions competition, Chapel Plaister’s Jacobs followed it up in perfect style with victory in the Area 30 final two weeks ago.

The North Wilts player defeated Ros Constant 21-10 in the area final on her own green at Ashton Vale, Bristol.

Jacobs moves forward to the inter-area final this Saturday on the neutral green at Clarrie Dunbar (Frome) where she faces Maureen Hordle, from Isle of Wedmore IBC, who won the Area 29 final by beating Jackie Ware (St Andrews, WSM) 21-10.

The inter-area final is a last 32 match in the national Champion of Champions competition and just one step away from booking a place in the national finals and last 16 at Warner Leisure, Hayling Island, at the end of January next year.

Sue Cooke, who won the ladies national pairs with Alex Jacobs in 2010 and is partnering her again this season, is competing in the Over 60s ladies singles completion for the first time and has reached the Area 30 final.

She booked her place in the O60s area singles final, where she will play either Pauline Dandon (Purnell) or Val Osmond (Thornbury), with victories over Jean Collier (North Wilts) and Thornbury duo Sue Latham and Fran Stockford recently.

NORTH Wilts ladies are also enjoying success in the national team competitions and still running in the three main events - Yetton Trophy, Vivienne Trophy and Over 60s Mason Trophy.

They are through to round four (last 32) in the Yetton and face Taunton Deane on January 16 - two rinks home and two away.

Today they face Bristol in the second round of the Vivienne - two triples home and away.

In the Mason Trophy, Over 60s double rinks they meet Thornbury in a third round tie on Friday, December 18.

North Wilts went out of both of the mixed competitions last weekend, being beaten by Clarrie Dunbar in the Top Club and in the Egham Trophy.
