NORTH WILTS Indoor Club enjoyed a fine weekend double with victories in two national team competitions - the men’s Denny Cup against Purnell and the mixed Top Club against Swindon Westlecot.

The men led Paulton-based Purnell across the board throughout, leading 26-11 at five ends, 46-30 at ten and 62-50 at 15 but were pulled back to 67-60 at18.

However, a strong finish led by Maurice Byrom’s rink who came from 24-11 down at 18 ends to win 26-24 settled the match in North Wilts’ favour 85-71.

Richard Gainey’s home rink at Westcroft produced the biggest winning margin out of North Wilts three with a 22-11 success.

They now play Bristol in round two on Saturday, November 14.

THE MIXED team at North Wilts followed up the men’s success as they thrashed fellow Wiltshire side Swindon Westlecot in the opening round of the Top Club competition.

They took the honours in four of the five disciplines - women’s singles, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours.

In the second round to be played by December 6, North Wilts are paired with Clarrie Dunbar.

ANOTHER busy period awaits North Wilts bowlers in national team competitions this week.

Commencing today, the ladies meet West Berks (Newbury) in the opening round of the Vivienne Trophy, two rinks home and two away. Last season they reached the quarter-finals before going out narrowly to Dolphin (Poole).

Meanwhile, the B side face Clarrie Dunbar in round one of the Mason Trophy, over 60s ladies double rinks.

In the Yetton Trophy, North Wilts ladies face Nailsea in round two on Saturday and to complete a busy weekend on Sunday, the mixed team lock horns with Christie Miller, Melksham in round two of the Egham Trophy - two rinks home and two away.

The men’s over 60s double rinks side play Christie Miller, while in the Denny Cup the men meet Bristol next Saturday.

WILTSHIRE county selectors have named both the men’s and ladies’ teams to compete in the opening round of this season's inter-county championship.

North Wilts ladies feature prominently but no players are selected in the men’s team, the best is Dave Williams amongst the reserves.

In the 24-strong ladies team, North Wilts supply 17 players, while Westlecot have three representatives named and both Christie Miller and Five Rivers have two each.

Twelve of the players in the county men’s side play indoors for Westlecot but next season interestingly seven of them will feature for rivals Wotton Bassett outdoors.
