THE 2015/16 INDOOR season clicks into top gear this coming week.

The majority of the national championships in Area 30 (Wiltshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire) in both the men’s and women’s events begin in earnest in the next month, although the champion of champions events swing into action this weekend.

Thelma Bailey (Clarrie Dunbar) is drawn away against Ros Constant (Bristol), Bev Lilley (Christie Miller) meets Jenny White (Nailsea) while North Wilts Alex Jacobs has drawn Purnell’s Pauline Dando (Paulton) in the ladies event.

Bob George (North Wilts) is drawn against R Chappell (Nailsea), Christie Miller’s Andy Moore has to travel to Clevedon to play ex-England international and national selector Pip Branfield while John Freeman (Clarrie D) faces an away game with Dale Taylor (Purnell) in the men's.

The Wessex League central region also begins on Sunday, with holders Clarrie Dunbar, Christie Miller, North Wilts, Bristol, Nailsea, Purnell and Thornbury contesting.

Christie Miller (Melksham) open with a tough game against Bristol, while Clarrie Dunbar begin the defence of their overall title when they meet Purnell.

On the team front in women’s national inter-club competitions, North Wilts A and Christie Miller are first up, both facing preliminary round ties in the Mason Trophy (Over 60s double rink) against Thornbury and Nailsea respectively.

The two victors play each other in round one, while Clarrie Dunbar face North Wilts B both by November 6.

North Wilts open this season’s tilt at the Vivienne Trophy against West Berks (Newbury) by November 5.

The main women’s team event, Yetton Trophy, which North Wilts won in 2008 starts a week on Saturday, North Wilts facing Christie Miller while Clarrie Dunbar meet Purnell (Paulton).

In the mixed Egham Trophy, Clarrie Dunbar face Purnell in round one on October 25 and, if successful, would then meet Clevedon in round two on November 8 – the same day that Christie Miller and North Wilts who had first round byes are set to clash.

North Wilts have been drawn at home in round one of the mixed Top Club tournament against Swindon Westlecot, to be played by November 1, with the carrot being home advantage again in round two against Clarrie Dunbar. Christie Miller who also had a bye into round two meet Purnell at home – match to be played by December 6.

In the men’s O60s double rinks North Wilts B have to play Nailsea by October 16 with the winner moving forward to meet Christie Miller in round two while Clarrie Dunbar and North Wilts A, who also had round one byes, are set to face Clevedon and Bristol respectively.

In the Denny Cup, top men’s inter-club team event, where games are to be played on Saturday October 31, Clarrie D face Thornbury, Christie Miller meet Nailsea while North Wilts have avoided Bristol and drawn Purnell.

The North Wilts club in Chippenham, the only indoor green in Wiltshire with six genuine rinks, will again host all of Wiltshire men's and ladies home national inter-county championship games in the 2015/16 season.

The first will be the ladies Atherley Trophy opening round home tie with Somerset on Sunday, November 15 and the following Saturday, the men’s first round clash with Gloucestershire in the Liberty Trophy.

WILTSHIRE men made a successful start to the 2015/16 season of indoor county friendly matches with a victory.

Under the stewardship of new men’s county president Bob Roberts-Phare (North Wilts) they won their opening game beating Oxfordshire by nine shots running-out 101-92 victors at Westlecot last Saturday.

Despite Wiltshire only taking the spoils on two of the five rinks the big wins by rinks skipped by John Southern (21 shots) and Dave Richards (11 shots) proved decisive in the final analysis.

The next men’s county indoor friendly is this coming Sunday, October 18 when Wiltshire entertain Devon IBA at North Wilts (2pm).
