CORSHAM’S Paul Beazer and Sue Ochyra (Devizes) completed a double when winning the men’s and ladies champion of champions at the Bowls Wiltshire finals staged at Devizes last weekend.

Beazer was ahead in his champion of champions final against Tom Pittuck (Town Gardens). He only led 8-5 at ten ends but then pulled away to a 16-6 lead at 15 and to a comfortable 21-8 victory to give the Corsham club a rare men’s success at county level.

Ochyra’s champion of champions match against Pewsey’s Trish Jarrett was a much tighter affair and at 15 ends they were tied 12-12. But then Ochyra with the benefit of home green advantage edged away to lead 17-14 at 21 ends and win 21-16 on the 24th end.

Chippenham Town’s Jim Dix lifted the men’s unbadged four wood singles title and Chippenham Park’s Gerry Tinson staged a grandstand finish to win the greenkeepers competition.

Dix moved 12-7 up against Amesbury’s Ashley Plumb in the unbadged singles at ten ends and was always a few shots to the good and finally won 21-15.

The greenkeepers final saw the lead change hands several times.

Despite leading 7-3 at five ends Gerry Tinson (Chippenham Park) trailed Wroughton’s Brian Coles 8-9 at ten ends and was 17-12 down at 18.

He stared defeat in the face losing 19-17 after 23 ends but on the next grabbed a maximum count of four for a last gasp 21-19 success.

However, on Sunday morning Tinson together with his Chippenham Park colleague’s Roy Delehaye and Martyn Whittaker had to give second best to Purton losing the Over 60 triples final 19-10.

Sunday morning also saw Wootton Bassett’s Maisie and Charlotte Daniell lose the BW Under 21 pairs final 26-12 to Westlecot while Bassett’s Sue Reeve and Harold Jones went down 23-9 to Holt in the final of the secretary and treasurers competition.

Wootton Bassett men surprised many by beating warm favourites Holt by nine shots (77-68) in the play-off final of the Wiltshire Men’s Four Rink League.

It was only the third time Wootton Bassett have won this prestigious county league title since it began in 1920, their two previous successes were in 1989 and 1973 while their only other final appearance was in 2011 when they lost narrowly by five shots to Westlecot.

Bassett made a slow start in this year’s final and trailed Holt 26-14 across the board at five ends and 44-31 at ten. But they fought back cutting the gap to 56-49 at 15 and had drawn level at 62-62 after 18.

Then in a grandstand finish over ends 18-21 Wootton Bassett pulled away to victory scoring 15 shots and only conceding six.

Bassett took the honours on two rinks with Gary Morphet’s rink winning 22-12 and collecting a match winning seven shots in the last three ends while Steve Snell’s rink although losing 24-20 pulled in a vital six shots in the final three ends.

Bassett women lost the Top Ten final to Box 3-1 while Chippenham Town went down 47-30 to Amesbury in the Mixed Double Rinks final.

Bassett Ladies were in with a great chance of causing an upset in the Top Ten final against holders Box when well after the halfway point they led the fours, singles and triples disciplines for a 3-1 advantage.

However, the match turned when Bassett’s Lucy Smith holding a 20-14 lead in the singles failed to cross the winning line against Janet Hardie (Box). She was reeled in dropping a four and lost 21-20.

This loss appeared to knock the stuffing out of the Bassett ladies and with the pairs match a one-way affair in Box favour they began chasing shots in the fours and triples to overcome the big deficit and finished only drawing both games for a half point each and losing overall 3-1.

Chippenham Town were always trailing in the mixed double fours to Amesbury.

They were 14 -9 down at five ends, 28-15 at ten and 35-24 at 15 and finally lost the final 47-30.

Paul Macdonald’s rink went down 24-17 to Nick Revell while Willie Jones’ four lost 23-13 to John Ellis.
