The quartet of Janet Hardie, Carol and Nick Grenfell from the Box Club and Spencer Moulton’s Graham Shadwell came close to winning another national title for Wiltshire at the weekend.

On the final day of the men’s, ladies and mixed national championships at Royal Leamington Spa the Box trio and Shadwell,  substituting for the unavailable Russell Francis, were beaten in the final of the mixed fours competition 24-16 by Northamptonshire, skipped by England international Jamie Walker.

The Wiltshire foursome opened with a 19-17 success over Sussex in the last 16 and followed that up with a one shot victory over Kent in the quarter-finals as Shadwell collected three shots on the last end for a last gasp 20-19 win.

In the semis the Wiltshire four just edging home by one shot over Berkshire.

But their bid for glory came to an end at the last hurdle. “We unfortunately lost the final 24-16 to Jamie Walker and were out played,” said deputising skip Shadwell.

“We looked good early doors then dropped a four and a five and that was very hard to chase back.”
