Final round slip is so costly for angry Sturgis

Badminton Horse Trials: Dauntsey rider Beanie Sturgis was annoyed after a final round slip-up by horse Monarch's Rock knocked her down to 27th place at the end.

The 34-year-old was handily placed going into the last show jumping round after solid dressage and eventing stages.

But Monarch's Rock didn't jump to his full potential in the show jumping round, leaving Sturgis frustrated.

She said: He was fabulous for a lot of it but we had a run out at a corner when he lost his concentration going in and couldn't come out to the left, which was annoying.

But he was still very quick.

Obviously being very competitive I'm pretty furious that my Badminton could have gone a lot better.

But this time last year the horse got eliminated in Ireland and we thought we'd give up with him, so he's picked up and come a long way since then.'' Yet despite her personal disappointment, Sturgis' mood was lifted by the number of local well-wishers who felt she competed superbly.

"I've had lots of local followers coming up to me and saying well done', people have been amazing.

"It's been lovely, I've had a lot of support.

"I think people realise it has been a very tough Badminton and the horse went fantastically on the cross country until he made his little mistake, so I've been very lucky."
