Wigley's Olympic hope

Badminton Horse Trials: Westonbirt rider Ann-abel Wigley was the second best of the New Zealand riders, finishing 17th on Black Drum.

"I did Badminton last year and was going clear cross country," said the 24-year- old. "Then Black Drum stumbled and grazed his nose - there was a bit of blood and the stewards pulled me up three from home, which was so disappointing."

There were no such let-downs this time and the bay thoroughbred, who Annabel first brought to Britain in 2006, jumped a great clear with 13.2 time penalties.

"The course was a lot tougher this year, particularly through the Vicarage Vee complex," Wigley added. "Black Drum goes in a good rhythm and covers the ground well.

My mother came over from New Zealand to support me and there were heaps of Kiwis to cheer me on."

Her aim now is to win a place at the Olympics but no decision on the New Zealand team will be made until June.

"That's six weeks of very tense waiting," Wigley said. "If I don't get there I may go to Burghley in the autumn."
