SWINDON TOWN: Miller will miss injured Navarro

TOMMY Miller has stressed how much Swindon Town will miss midfielder Alan Navarro as he recovers from a medial ligament injury.

Navarro was stretchered off in the dying minutes of Town’s 2-2 draw with Coventry on Saturday amidst fears he may have suffered a recurrence of the cruciate ligament problems which have blighted his career.

However, after seeking expert advice on the trouble area, the Scouser was told he would be out for around a month with a less serious medial ligament knock.

Still, Miller emphasised how much his midfield partner can add to the team when fully fit.

“Alan is in Rome getting some treatment, and initially we feared he might have done his cruciate again,” he said.

“But it seems to be a medial ligament which isn’t as bad, although he will still miss a few weeks but will be back sooner rather than later.

“He is a good player and he is very experienced, and he can pass the ball well and is a good organiser, and he will be missed.

“But we have a good squad of players here and there are plenty of lads who can come in and play, and allows the manager to change things around.”

With regular skipper Alan McCormack having sat out the past two matches with a hamstring problem, Miller stood in as captain and enjoyed the experience.

He hinted, however, that McCormack could be set for a return to the first team against Scunthorpe this weekend.

He said: “It has been okay but it doesn’t really change much because it is just an armband on your arm.

“Alan will be back in training I would have thought, and if he is back in the team I am sure he will resume the captaincy.

“I enjoyed it of course because I am a leader on the pitch.”

I'm sorry, I managed to watch four games while I was over in late September and early October. The centre of our midfield, with the exception of Simon Ferry, was useless, even in the Bournemouth and Burnley games where the team as a whole put in terrific performances. Miller, I'm afraid, is past his best, and Navarro was utterly unimpressive. I never like to see a player of ours injured, but this absence may prove a blessing in disguise. Paolo seems a little too enamoured of players who have played at a higher level, but who may now be past their sell-by. See a certain ex-Millwall centre half whom I would bench in favor of Flint and Macca or Flint and Troy - nothwithstanding the latter's nightmare against Colchester. The latter pairing would allow Alan to move into the holding midfield role.

Agree only seen miller have one good game so far this season ferry is by far our best midfielder and would like to see troy and flint play together more often to get a partnership going as both are young lads still.

You've got a point there - just look at how much Paolo talked up some of the Coventry team for their prem/champ/internati
onal experience, although if any were that good they'd still be playing at that level.

With Navarro out, there must be a chance that Macca may be used as holding midfield role on Saturday. With Leon Clarke up front think we will need Flint to continue at the back, Not sure if Troy is ready to return, he looked very low on confidence against Colchester, but our centre back cover should not be a problem. It's the midfield that needs a ball winner and a play maker, Ferry and Macca for me, but doubt Paulo would rest Miller.

There is a lot of talk about needing another striker but I'm convinced our real weakness is the centre of midfield. Ferry is without doubt our best playmaker but he needs to be complemented by a combative ball winner in the mould of Ray McHale or the much maligned Jonathan Douglas. Even PDC (despite his rantings about the strikers) seems to have recognised the problem in the last few games by resorting to hoofball from the back and taking the midfielders out of the game.

I haven't seen anything from Navarro to suggest he desreves his place and Miller looks past his best although he has obviously been a very good player. Total agreement with Grove Red about pairing Flint and Troy, we would be so much stronger with 2 tall centre backs. Against Coventry we looked stronger combatting the high balls into defence with Flint and Ward but Troy is younger and has much more potential. Ferry is currently our best midfielder but agree with Den, a midfielder like Ray McHale is exactly what we need alongside him, McHale was as hard as nails, skilful and had excellent vision - a fine player. Personally I would still like to see Bostock given more starts, he offers something very different and I think him and Williams would complement each other well and both have speed and the ability to beat players.

Miller is a player I would have loved to have had five years ago, but for me is still very good at this level, but I dont understand the Navaro - Miller partnership, miller looks better with Ferry and personaly I think SF is our best midfielder...
