SWINDON TOWN: Backhouse will not be leaving Town board - Black
6:00am Wednesday 17th October 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Russell Backhouse
RUSSELL Backhouse will not be leaving the Swindon Town board, contrary to suggestions made by manager Paolo Di Canio, according to majority shareholder Andrew Black.
On Monday, when news of former chairman Jeremy Wray’s removal broke, it was suggested that Backhouse - a director of the club who originally arrived at the County Ground as part of the consortium which saved the Robins from impending liquidation in 2008 - could resign his post.
However, in an email to the Advertiser yesterday, Black - who has pumped millions of pounds into the club over the past four years - nonsensed the claims.
He wrote: “I saw that it was suggested that Russell is off the board - that is not true.”
The intimations that Backhouse could also leave Swindon were first mooted in a statement from Di Canio, released to the Advertiser on Monday evening.
In it he wrote: “I am very sad that Jeremy Wray has been replaced as the chairman of Swindon Town, as I know this is something that he didn’t want.
“I have also been informed that in view of this decision, one of the directors, Russell Backhouse may also step down from the board.
“It is important for me to have a team around me that I can trust.
“Jeremy Wray and Russell Backhouse, Phil Spencer and myself have worked tirelessly as a team to bring success to this club but now with Jeremy going and Russell potentially soon to depart, half of that team may soon be taken away.”

We already know that PDC is far far better at football managing than being Yoda (ie calm reflection) but it did surprise me that he fell into the trap of suggesting that Mr Backhouse may also step down. That sort of suggestion should only come from Mr Backhouse.
Lets have some football now.
I cant wait to see how PDC and the team show what they are truly worth on Saturday. COYR - do your stuff..

Live DiCanio but he needs to put up or shut up. He can't keep holding the club and fans to ransom. The board have done very well and will continue to. A change of man in the public eye doesn't change anything, Wray would have had to pass things through Black as the new guy will also. We're high enough profile now to attract a very decent manager should Paolo move on which, at some point he will anyway. He's great and it's been an excellent ride, one I wouldn't change but managers dint hang around for more than a few seasons nowadays. When he goes I'm sure there are plenty who'd fill his boots .

Im astounded at how many people are saying "its not a problem is Paolo leaves, there are plenty others who could do just as well"
I very, very much doubt we could attract any manager who could do the job as well as Paolo has so far, and will continue to do! They say you dont know what you've got till its gone and for a lot of out 'fans' this appears to be the case!

I can't help thinking there are some on here actually want him to fail and leave, which is sad really, the grass is always greener so they say, yes he has made a few mistakes and he might even have a few regrets, but I doubt too many of them will play on his mind. I'm still of the mind set, he won't be going anywhere for the foreseeable future and the majority of our supporters want him to stay and achieve what he set out to do and get us into the championship.
There has been many complaints from the arm chair managers of poor signings and wasted money. but on the other hand he gave almost all of his signings a chance to show what they were capable of and improve. Raffa de Vita and Wes for example took their chance and are still here, others like Lanzano should have been ashamed to pick up their pay packets and was definitely a failure.
We know come January the embago will have been lifted and there is likely to be changes with the squad.for the better one would hope, probably only Paolo and Spencer know who they have in mind to bring in, but if it's a loanee it could be late January before we see anyone new, until it happens we all have to be patient and hope with the players we have we can keep on rolling along with not too many injuries or other distractions.
Will be interesting if all 4 exiles play for the Scunnie on Saturday, would think they will be motivated to put one over on us. Just hope the real Swindon town turn up and we can get back to winning games at home.

I am gutted Wray has gone, but Sir William has some pedigree and may bring a whole different skill set to our club.. At the end of the day Mr Black (sounds like a res deogs character) has pumped millions into this club and has backed his manager to the hilt, other clubs have to cope with injuries and we have a very good squad here.

I like your naming of 2 players considered to have 'taken their chance'. I could name you over 10 that have been paid off, moved on or fallen out with. Paolo is not a nurturing manager; you either have it and you'll be able to play his way or you don't play and get moved on. This team all spout out niceness for the press - they have seen what happens if they don't. It is not nice for them to constantly be told they are not good enough or there is not enough quality in the side. If PDC moves on there will be a few happy faces in that squad. We may also see some improvement in players that are given time to develop and not play through fear. PDC will become a laughing stock if he leaves because he has 'not had enough funds'. He's had more than enough to compete in this league and been very wasteful. He'll be considering his future very seriously now and a few managers will be sharpening up their C.Vs as we speak. I think he'd be a very good manager if he kept his thoughts to himself more, didn't slate players in public and was less of a control freak. If he stays and gets STFC double promotion then people will stand up and take notice of him. We'll see how much the club means to him in the next few weeks.

Perhaps now is a good time to cut the club, the board, the manager and the team some slack, let the dust settle and see how things go for a while. I was hoping for a quiet week STFC wise this week and letting the team prepare for Scunnie and start working up towards the Villa visit. Plan B seemed to work very well so I'm told on Saturday. As supporters perhaps we should now be focused on that and let the club settle down after this upheaval. I liked Wray as much as everyone else, the fact is, very regrettably he has gone. It is now up to folk at the club to establish working relationships with each other to take the club forward. It will take time. Black has pumped in millions, that says to me, he isn't going to up sticks and walk away, he has far too much to lose. he will also want to keep stability so will entice the manager to stay through working with the new chair. Its all positive. Wray did a magnificent job of getting us a manager with enthusiasm and getting us of League Two, for which we are all very grateful, new man now to take things further.
Very pleased Backhouse is staying and Watkins, we need that stability .
Roll on Saturday, a home win and three points, and lets start building on that.

Paolo could take us all the way to the premier league, or he could throw his toys out of the pram and walk. I think the embargo is a good thing, because it will maybe make him think about who's adaptable enough to fit into another position.
In turn the players won't need to look over their shoulders all the time, wondering who is going to be brought in to replace them because they are not quite firing on all cylinders.
The best managers, especially in the lower leagues, make do, by adapting and gradually giving youngsters game time - simply because they cannot flash the cheque book.

Touching on that comment. No one knows who wants to leave and not. It's very uncommon for a player to stand up and declare they want to leave. Doesn't mean they are happy. Just ask the wife. Joking aside,
Our players won't risk saying anything even remotely out of turn as they don't want to be training on their own and slagged off to the press with a one-sided version of events. See: Caddis. As everyone inc PDC has stated a model professional and leads by example. Never ever had any issue in the past. In PDCs opinion a little of the starting fitnesss so bombed out for that. One of our best players and captain thrown out the club. Not for drink-driving, an assault or a gambling habit (for which most clubs stick by players) but for that. A player so unfit he got man of the match in his first game on loan in a league above.
For me it's not just one thing with the manager - it is many smaller events which if were isolated incidents would not be a problem so much. Or if he learned by them. But this things are habitual and a product of one man's make-up which cannot be changed and shows no evidence of doing so.
We all love the passion of course we do and its nice to have. Not as nice as having a stable club though. But really, those post match interviews have caused more trouble and embarrassment to the club and players than they have instilled solidarity and togetherness. Fans are not divided on 'passion' but are on at what cost it comes. It is at the point now where people are saying 'here we go again with another falling out' or ' he's going on about not having any money again despite spending millions. It's just wearing thin now and fans are becoming more divided. Imagine if D Wilson had that money and spent it on duff players and then fell out with them - people would be slating him yet they think its ok as PDC has the passion and it is this 'passion' which apparently gives someone the lee-way to do what they want. Wilson wasn't even allowed to spend money on agent fees so no wonder he lost a bit of spark. PDC spent 1/2 a mill on them (of which a big whack went to uncle Phil Spencer) Some of the very people saying thank you to A Black for saving us are happy to see his money wasted.
The best thing hat can happen is PDC stays but chills out a bit and manages his squad and players in a more respectful way. IF this is possible it would be good for him to stay.
If he leaves over this embargo then we know that passion and fight were not really as they seemed all along. Show us some fight and get us up to the Championship. Amen.

---.
The message that PDC leaving after J-Ray and general 'assumed' uncertainty would give players an easy excuse to say ok I'll take the option of moving on.
---.
Anyway - Assuming he stays and getting back to football the big question of the week is will Temper Tantrum Clarke acknowledge PDC?
...
Will Clarky score....or should that be WHEN will he score?....given that so many past players seem to relish putting the ball in the Swindon net.
---
Big games Saturday but I don't see them causing us too many problems (famous last words)....3 points is a big must, especially as several of the others around us have tricky ties and look likely to drop 2pts in most cases.

If you want to say in your opinion Paolo's overspent then that's fine, it's an opinion, but don't pull an arbitrary figure out of the sky and present it as fact.
As for saying he will be "easily replaced" - that's an opinion you're perfectly entitled to give. I think you're totally wrong though. For a club like ours to attract a promising manager who was really driven to bring success to the club rather than just pick up their wages (a la Paul Hart, Malpas and others too numerous to mention) will be a daunting task.
Quite happy to hear a list of potential replacements that we could realistically stand a chance of getting though if you want? It won't be a long one.

I believe PDC can rely on some support from Mr. Backhouse in the future.
After all the article did only say he "MAY also step down".
Mr. Black has pumped HIS cash into Swindon and as such must be seen as the reason we still have a club to support. I for one must thank you again.
At the end of the day we must now move on and rely on PDC to do the same. After all we still have an excellent opportunity to gain back to back promotions and what a feather in PDC's cap that would be. If PDC does read these posts I urge him to move on,(with Swindon) and offer his usual 100% effort to get promotion, after all the job is only half done.
We need some positive thinking here to just get on with things.
A win Saturday would be great start.
Onward and hopefully upward to the Championship.
