THE highs and lows of football were encapsulated for me in a few minutes in the north of England on Saturday.

An away win from a match which won't live long in the memory and a shudder down the back upon hearing of a transfer embargo.

Now I know we live in changed times where Swindon Town are concerned and we have a chairman and board of directors with a bit of financial clout.

But it was still a bit of a shock to read that phrase on Twitter within minutes of leaving Gigg Lane. Somehow you thought it was a phrase you would never hear again with our club.

I’ve no doubt it'll be resolved satisfactorily by Mr Wray and colleagues, but just for a while, memories of near financial disaster came flooding back.

No Town fan who was there will forget one night at Griffin Park especially, which could have been Swindon’s last game.

The club was within a few minutes of going under and spirits were low. It’s a feeling no Town fan ever wants to have again.

Thankfully we’ve recovered from those dark times and many since, and the figurative sun shines on the County Ground.

The new financial footballing rules, which the Town apparently voted for, are in place to stop clubs spending more than they can afford.

I think we all applaud that even if it comes with a dose of reality. We can’t all be Manchester City and Chelsea and throw money around like confetti.

It’s quite simple, live within your means.

The visit of Coventry on Saturday got me thinking of Ernie Hunt.

A quick look on the internet and you'll see his famous goal against Everton in 1970, a Willie Carr ‘donkey kick’ and a great volley by Swindon legend Ernie while wearing the Sky Blue shirt.

Do yourself a favour and have a look at a great piece of footballing invention, which was later outlawed by the authorities.

Just finally, please, if your team is leading by a single goal in the last few minutes away from home and the ball goes into your section of the crowd... give the bleeping thing back.

Don't do what one group of Town fans did on Saturday and mess about with it. The referee adds time on.

Got that? It means YOUR team has to hang on for longer.

Hope you understood that. Although I somehow doubt it.
