TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION ONE: Seend edge Magpies in derby day battle

WITH no win in four games since their opening day 2-1 success over Bradford United, Semington Magpies hosted near-neighbours Seend United looking to end their poor run of results.

Seend themselves haven’t had the best of starts in Division One of the Trowbridge Windows & Conservatories-sponsored Trowbridge League, but with just one loss to their hosts in the previous six games they would have been confident of another victory over Ricky King’s side.

That is exactly what they got as they came from behind to claim a 3-2 win.

Semington took an early first-half lead when Dan Rimmer pounced on a loose pass by the Seend defence and calmly rounded the keeper and slotted home for 1-0. Seend dragged themselves level before half time with Ashley Groves restoring parity.

Seend went 2-1 up in the second half through Carl Harfield and James Eatough made it 3-1 on 70 minutes.

Semington pulled a goal back late on courtesy of Sam Malone which left Seend hanging on and with time running out Semington’s Dan Rimmer missed a good chance to earn his team a share of the points as shortly after referee Luke Rudman brought proceedings to an end.

Freshford United 4 Castle Combe 1

AFTER a goalless first half Jamie Olding broke the deadlock when he put Freshford ahead with his first goal for the club.

Steve Roddy maintain his fine form in front of goal when he doubled Freshford’s lead. Will Couzens reduced the deficit for Combe but any hopes of a revival were shortlived a second from Olding restored Freshford’s two-goal cushion and the victory was wrapped up thanks to a third from Olding that capped a red letter day for the 22 year old who was making his debut for the club.

Melksham Town Reserves 3 North Bradley 1

MELKSHAM Town Reserves and North Bradley made a welcome return to action following a weeks rest.

Another improved performance from Paul Ranger's fledgling Bradley X1 yielded no points though as Melksham’s second-half pressure brought late rewards and three goals which earned them a 3-1 success.

Melksham found chances hard to carve out in the first half, though Emilio Menghini blazed over when he should have scored. North Bradley had plenty of good possession but Lewis Smith's blocked effort was as close as they came.

Bradley continued to frustrate Melksham and play some neat football, and set themselves up for a smash and grab when Dean Ranger's bullet header left Gareth Evans clutching at thin air on the hour.

Despite plenty of energy Melksham were finding it hard to create, and just as Bradley sensed a famous victory their centre halves challenged for the same ball and Menghini picked up the scraps and fired the hosts level.

Shortly after Bradley dallied in defence and as Menghini again pounced Ben Lee pulled him back and Menghini fired home from the spot. Menghini completed his hat-trick with his second penalty, but the handball decision against Lee was extremely harsh, a view shared by both teams.
