Di Canio: Treat Colchester like Stoke

RESPECT: Paolo Di Canio RESPECT: Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio has told his Swindon Town players to treat Colchester United as they did Stoke City in the build-up to this evening’s League One clash.

The Robins go into the contest against the struggling U’s in pursuit of a fifth straight win in all competitions and face a Colchester side who only picked up their first league victory of the campaign on Saturday.

However, with new manager Joe Dunne in place at the Weston Homes Community Stadium following the sacking of John Ward, Di Canio expects the Essex outfit to provide a stern test for his squad.

The Italian is convinced Swindon have too much for Colchester to handle, but only if Town prepare for the match in the same way they did prior to the Capital One Cup success at the Premier League Potters back in August.

“If we underestimate them for a bit, we’re going to have big trouble,” he said.

“If we play our football, with desire and determination and treat them like they are Stoke City or Brighton there is no chance for them.

“If, if, if - because if is a crucial word.

“They will play with enthusiasm, determination, they’re going to put us under pressure.

“I like the way the new manager sends his message to his players but it’s obvious we’re still a better side and we have to take the points and move on.

“If we don’t have the fire or the quality when we have possession, it doesn’t mean anything to keep the three lines.

“It’s obvious when you have quality, desire, you know each other and you use the right players in the right system that makes a big difference.

“If we play with fire there is very little chance of them getting a point, but only if we play our football.”

Well Canioman has spoken, so lets go and give it to them, nice clean 3-0 please, we need to get that all important goal difference up, as it may be very crucial at the end of the season.

We seem to have a hardcore of less than 8,000 at the moment and Colchester don't get many travelling, especially midweek. I doubt we'll hit the 8,000 mark.

I don't think so either Den but if folk want their stubs to get Villa tickets they will have to get off there arses and get down the CG, as it is right now only season ticket holders have any guarantees and rightly so.

Absolutely right Izzak(:O) or is that Kent Walton?

Luckily being a canny Jockster I've got all bases covered - got both Burnley & Colchester stubs and season ticket mate getting ticket anyway cos he's on his jollies - I could end up being a tout as well as a tart lol!

Tut tut, IZAAK would turn in his grave Malky, one Z is quite enough.

Well it certainly ain't John Boy Walton and neither is it Walton on Thames,so Izaak it is and in the words of the great man himself,
"Good company and good discourse are the very sinews of virtue" that said Jayden, see you this evening.

Afternoon all, just before you trot off to lunch the bet of the day is the Town to win on the handicap giving Colchester a one goal start. Price 7/4 with laddies and a few others. You can only get 11/2 on us winning the league and when Paolo puts out a full side tonight I'm expecting a two goal victory at the very least.

Can't wait.

Yeah you never know what you are going to get with them eh Don, I mean by rights and with no disrespect to the club i have always felt that they punch above their weight by continuing to compete in league 1 but fair do`s they have and still are, only i feel that this may well catch up with them this season, looking for a good display tonight and no slip ups as per Orient.
PS i have heard that only a coach full coming from them so all tonight's Attendance will by and large be Town fans.

I think we underestimate any other team in this league at our peril - particularly in return fixtures at their place when we've stuffed them at the CG e.g. Bournemouth.

Steve are you in Winners/Legends tonight?

I doubt that Troy will start . It'll be Macca and Ward in central defence.
I hope also that Thommo is back in, as much as I like Bessone he still isn't match fit.

I thought Kent Walton used to commentate on the ITV Wrestling in the 60's-70's.

Ah yes the days of Steve Logan and Mick McManus, Mark Roller Ball Rocco,
Vic Faulkener, Jackie Pallo and many more.

Aye well said as always Paolo.

We are the better team, we have better players and can play better football. However, football doesn't always go by the book otherwise id be rich and the bookies would be skint ;) (plus it be boring as hell)

Another point is that Colchester will be right up for it, the Di Canio factor along with the fact they have a new manager in the so called 'honeymoon' period will mean they will come here really trying to get something.

But as has been said, if we play to our potential we should get the 3 points.

Yes Wiz he did -my little joke with Steve re him a fisherman an Izak Walton who wrote the Compleat(not a typo) Angler.

Not to mention Billy Two Rivers, Johnny Kwango. Kellett was pure comedy and of course there was Kent Walton trying to make us believe that it was all genuine hard core wrestling when we all knew it was a fix!!

Don't think I ever recall seeing Pallo & McManus ever lose on TV -perhaps just once or twice to give back some supposed "credibilty"

And what do we get now? Rock all - no World of Sport with Dickie "Mallon streak" Davies or Grandstand with debonair Des or Frank "have it off" Bough -we get insulted with crap like Bargain Hunt FFS!! No wonder Murdoch rubs his hands gleefully.

When at College in Southampton during the late 60's I used to go and watch Wrestling on the Royal Pier on a Thursday night. Used to get down there early to meet the guys on the way in and get the programme autographed for my old Mum who loved it. Saw Kellett beat Logan one night. Do you remember the twins who were deaf and dumb, Adrian Street, Zoltan Bostik, Steve Royal, the original ref the little Italian Lou Marco .then Max Ward and the M/C George Lawson-Peeke. Giant Haystacks and then Big Daddy, Shirley Crabtree, brother of Brian who wore the pink and blue jacket as M/C. great days they were. McManus was a tidy bloke outside the ring and I had a pint with him and a few others in a pub after the night on the pier, Big Pat Roache was a star outside the ring, lovely guy.
