SWINDON TOWN: Wes believes he's back to his best

KEEPER Wes Foderingham believes he is back to his confident best having firmly put the events of Town’s defeat at Preston behind him.

Manager Paolo Di Canio hauled the 21-year-old off the pitch after little more than 20 minutes of Town’s 4-1 defeat at Deepdale at the start of September, after the Italian was unhappy with the way Foderingham reacted to conceding two early goals But the pair patched things up after the keeper apologised to his manager and his teammates, and the former Crystal Palace feels he is back to his best following a clean sheet in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Shrewsbury.

“It was difficult when something like that happens because it hits the news fast and it blows up quite big, and in the games after that it was in the back of my mind that I needed a good performance,” he said.

“I was happy that I did okay at Oxford and after that I went on a winning streak, and after it all happened I was pleased to get back on the right track and playing well.

“I didn’t have much to do against Shrewsbury but the game against Portsmouth was probably my best and I was pleased to help.

“Clean sheets are not the be-all and end-all, but it is great to be able to play my part.”

Things could have turned out very differently at the Greenhous Meadow if Foderingham had not got back well to pounce on the ball on the line after letting a tame effort slip through his legs just seconds before Town took the lead.

“They put us under a bit of pressure and I made a bit of a bad decision at the back, and they had a little cross and I switched off a bit and I took the weak shot for granted and it went through my legs, but luckily it didn’t go over the line,” he said.

“My first thought was that it had gone in, but I reacted quickly and I managed to jump on it on the line.

“Then we went down the other end and scored which was great.

“If it had gone in the team talk at the end would have been a lot different if we had lost, and in these kind of games we need to stick together as a team and that is what we did.”

Di Canio made six changes to the side which beat Burnley in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, and Foderingham believes the fact Town were able to win in Shropshire shows the strength on the squad.

“We are gelling really well and we have a great squad now, and we have strength on depth in all areas of the field,” he said.

“We have players who can come in and go out for a few games and not look out of place, and that showed again and we are going really well.”
