BACK in the 1950s, Town must have dreaded making the trip up to Shropshire.

In the space of two years between 1955 and 1957, Swindon twice shipped seven goals at Gay Meadow.

On the final day of the 1954/55 season, Raymond Weigh notched four in a 7-0 Shrews win and, around Christmastime the following year, despite Town scoring three times, they still went home 7-3 losers.

Shrewsbury’s old ground was also host to the two team’s first ever League Cup match, during the inaugural competition in 1960.

David Layne found the net twice to secure a 2-2 draw and a replay in that tie, but the Robins were dumped out of the cup when the Shrews won the return clash 2-0 at the County Ground .

In recent times, however, Swindon have enjoyed more positive experiences on their visits to the Welsh border.

Though Paolo Di Canio’s Town team lost 2-1 at the New Meadow last term, of the Robins’ previous eight trips to Shrewsbury the Wiltshire side have only been beaten once.

Furthermore, prior to last season’s loss Swindon had won each of their previous four games at the Shrews.

Overall, Town have visited Shrewsbury 26 times, winning on 10 occasions, drawing six and losing 10.
