SWINDON TOWN: Rooney makes Burton switch

Luke Rooney Luke Rooney

SWINDON Town midfielder Luke Rooney has joined Burton Albion on a one-month loan deal.

The winger, who arrived at the County Ground from Gillingham in January for an undisclosed fee, has scored twice in 24 appearances for the Robins since his move but has struggled to make an impact on manager Paolo Di Canio’s matchday squad this season.

Rooney has come off the bench three times for Town this term and his only start of the campaign, at Preston, came to an abrupt end when he was hauled off at half-time.

The 21-year-old will be hoping for a more regular dose of first-team football at the Pirelli Stadium under manager Gary Rowett.

Been on the cards for a while, probably best for him to go on loan as he's clearly not going to feature for town any time soon.

It's done others in the past good hopefully the same for Luke
.
Never going to start regularly ahead of Roberts or Ritchie - but woul be a very handy sub
.
Wish him well and hope he comes back with a new spring to fight for a spot

No surprise there, Burton are not a bad side. He's still only 21, so has plenty of time to develop and have a future with us.

No surprise but in pre-season he was supposed to be on fire and then didn't really come into the reckoning. Hope loan gives him some first team experience - if only to make sure we get some kind of return on him if he is sold. We don't seem very good at getting fees for off-loaded players!

I think Luke Rooney has big potential and I hope this isn't the first step in a permanent move away from the County Ground.
I believe he would walk into most other League One sides, and it doesn't help him very much by not getting any game time at all with us.

He probably needs to change his attitude on the pitch a bit - does come off a bit petulant and stroppy, although obviously got a lot of talent and frightens defenders. If he had a more rounded game, more awareness of when to look up and pick out a pass rather than trying to beat the whole opposition he would be a great little player.

That's a big issue with lots of younger players - attitude
.
PdC mentioned that about our youths and got slated for it - even though what he said was bang on the nail - not just STFC but in England as a whole!
.
In his BBC article today he hints at a similar thing about why England are not close to winning a world cup as players are too interested in Tw@tting than training!
.
I saw a recent interview with Ling and he was talking about Lloyd Macklin and he said he needs to pull his finger out as his career has stalled for 5 years and said something like the problem is person we're trying to get the best out of
.
I don't know how Luke trains - but surely the bits like this we fans have picked up on must have been by the coaches
.
If so why is he/they not looking to rectify this - he even now has Roberts in there too to learn off
.
RDV is a great example - a vastly improved player out wide than when he first moved there - so the training must be doing something!
.
Ritchie too is much imporved under PdC and Co
.
As said above has great potential - just needs to realise it now
.
Lets hope the break ,a few game will give him that burst of life and he comes back fresh and pushes on as I doubt he wants to go back to L2

I don't think PDC literally meant they were spending all their time tweeting instead of trianing, but the twitter culture is part of a general syndrome where players seem to lose focus and be more interested in developing a profile than concentrating on improving their game.
*
Unfortunately it is simply a case that they are given too much too young and become too 'comfortable' - not much incentive to work harder when you've got everything you want. I'm not saying all players are like this, but it takes a special determination to work harder when you don't really need to. Or to keep punishing yourself to make tiny incremental improvements (eg Olympic athletes).
*
Not sure whether any of this applies to Rooney either - obviously he is not on the silly money a Prem youngster would be on - but hopefully the chance of some game time in a new environment will help his development.

Its is no coincidence that the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and even our own (England) Beckham are all noted over thier work rate in and outside training
.
PdC was the same as a player!
.
Beckham apparently used to stay behind put a jumper down over 100 yards away and wouldn't go in until he hit it 10 times in a row
.
I think we need to see youths in clubs working at least 9-5 all week
.
They don't need to be training all that time but undertaking education and or doing other jobs around the club
.
How many actually clean boots these days?

Yes, it's surprising young players don't 'get it' really. Was it Gary Player who coined the phrase, 'funnily enough, the harder I practise the luckier I become'?
*
All players in clubs' youth set-ups must have talent - it's a question of how hard they are prepared to work to develop it, and how far they want to get. And don't stop when you get a pro contract - keep pushing on to the next level. Beckham was a superb role model (ok he did a few silly things on the pitch).

With regards to the preston game, i was thinking the same as you grim, he was on the fringes up until then and with Poberts out injured, he should have been pushing Raffa for the shirt, but from then on he's been totally out of favour and probably didn't do himself any favours sitting with the fans instead of the bench.

Also we have players here who are a fair bit better than him, so that doesnt help !!

I was at the Preston match and Rooney was awful and i was very surprised he lasted the whole of the first half, so why he sat with us fans in the second half i assume in defiance of Paulo defies logic, and yes i agree he did himself absolutely no favours there!

He has talent but something is missing, the Gillingham supporters were not sorry to see him go and said although he had talent he just didnt show it enough in matches for them and would disapear for long spells. Personally i cant see him ever coming back here and getting into the team but hope i am proved wrong.

At least he will get some games under his belt. However hope is only just the LOAN as he may have been a slow starter like a few before him.
Wish him all the best.

Too inconsistent unfortunately which is a shame as when he is playing well he has had some decent games and looks good quality. A little lightweight unfortunately which doesn't help him impose himself on games, he could do with bulking up a bit like Ritchie did and maybe working on adding a yard of pace.

Back to the old issue of no reserve fooball I guess. When he arrived from Gillingham he was obviously more confident, and started well, but then Holmes came in, then Roberts, then RDV improved and that was that.

Another player away on loan like Cox,Caddis and Risser. Not totally a bad thing really but those reserve team games that we used to have would sure come in handy now.

Angolan Red says...

I believe Luke Rooney has great potential , but seems to work best when coming on as sub. Probably doesnt have right attitude to training but neither did Greavies or George Best. But I also agree that not having a reserve team football makes it difficult for players to gain confidence and get match fit

donaldslovechild says...

I hope the loan will do Luke some good because he represents something that is a rare commodity in football, the X factor. He does the unexpected which is probably the reason he is not figuring in Paolo's plans currently. It was obvious from the Preston performance that he lacked confidence and, imo, the fear factor that Paolo uses to great effect with the majority of players, palpably does not work for Luke. This boy could really be anything and it would be a criminal loss to us if he were allowed to leave for want of a hand on the shoulder and a bit of TLC.
