SWINDON TOWN: Wray delighted with Villa draw

SWINDON Town’s reward for reaching the fourth round of the Capital One Cup is a plum home tie with Premier League outfit Aston Villa.

The Robins were drawn to face Paul Lambert’s team last night after seeing off Burnley in round three on Tuesday, and will hoping to claim their fourth successive giant-killing in the competition this year, having already beaten Brighton, Stoke and the Clarets, when the two teams meet next month.

Swindon chairman Jeremy Wray was delighted with the draw.

He told the Advertiser: “Firstly, I hope tht Sky recognise it’s one of the ties of the round, you’ve got a big club in Aston Villa and an up and coming club in ourselves.

“There’s a real potential for an upset and it’s one of the stand-out ties of the round from that perspective.

“There’s the two big-hitters playing each other in Chelsea and Manchester United, but other than that it is probably the most attractive.

“Financially, you would hope for a packed County Ground and there’s also the potential for TV money as well.

“If ever there was an example to show just how far this club has come, looking at the draw with those 16 teams in it and seeing Swindon there is it.

“There’s 12 Premier League teams, a handful of Championship teams and it’s just ourselves and Bradford representing the lower leagues and I got a real buzz out of that.

“I know secretly Paolo wants to win this competition. Roll on the week of October 29.”

Glad that Paolo wants to win the competition. Why not? Lets get into the Europa league. Surely the FA or whoever won't stop us this time as they did in 1969.

Lets forget about Charlie Austin, Oxford etc and get a trophy in the cabinet! Obviously we want to go up as well. Great to see this great club has got its pride and ambition back! Btw we beat Burnley in 1969 to.

How refreshing to have a manager who has the desire to win every game. If there was a kickabout in the County Ground car park, Paolo Di Canio would be so competitive, his team would be driven to win. The Villa game is winnable. His forensic approach to each game, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and putting up a team to counteract the former and expose the latter, ensures Di Canio and his backroom staff give Swindon Town the advantage before the whistle is blown and a ball is kicked. Using a squad rotation system, he puts a team on the field of play which nullifies the opposition's attack and overwhelms their defence - add fresh reserves after about 80 minutes when the team have slogged their hearts out and given their all and it is clear that Paolo Di Canio is more than your average manager. A passionate, volatile, exuberant tactitian. Wembley here we come!

Last time we played Villa was the 93/94 season when we lost 5-0 at Vila Park. They also beat us 2-1 at the County Ground that season. Prior to that, we faced them in the FA Cup under Glenn Hoddle, played them off the park but lost 2-1.

The last time we took anything from a game with Villa was the 87/88 season with a 0-0 draw at the County Ground in the 2nd Division. It was still a good day for Villa though as they won promotion that day, finishing 2nd to Millwall.

I remember the FA Cup match against Villa on T.V, not Sky so I guess ITV. I was at Uni in norwich and was the only one in the Students Union that afternoon with any interest in it. It's a great tie because its actually more probable against Villa to get something from the game than one of the Big 5.

We'll have to offer them both to allow enough seats for a cup match allocation, if they don't sell out then maybe they'll just have the arkells and we can have the Stratton bank (a la Wigan). Villa will bring a few down though.

Midweek home games are hard for me to make but will be there for this one.

We gave Villa too much respect that day. Hoddle seemed scared of Big Fat Ron's reputation. Somehow I don't think our present manager will give a stuff about Villa's reputation!

As JW says it's a good marker of how far the club has come. I'm sure we'll put up more of a fight than in that anti climax FA cup tie. (Don't think Paolo does anti climax??)

Meanwhile the Shrews game will be another marker of how far the team has come, by keeping on track after the excitement of another famous cup win.

It's not up to is if we give them the bank or not
.
Under the competition rules a certain percentage has to be given to away fans (of which a set number have to be covered)
.
So it's up to Villa if they want the full allocation or not
.
Wigan chose not - so home fans got it - but Villa are bigger and Birmingham is closer so they may well take it
.
Behind the "Big 5" this is probably the best draw - the TV revenue and exposure would be great but you know it won't be us on the box

Seven games to play before the Cup match.

After the Shrews, games against current bottom 3, then Scunny, Crewe and Stevenage. A real chance to lay down a marker in this league and good prep for the Villa

Just seen this on a Villa fanzine - how disrespectful!
.
The names have been picked out of the hat, or whatever it is they do to indicate the next matches to be played in the League Cup, and Aston Villa have been paired up with Swindon Town. That's right, after having to face Manchester City in the last round -- and beating them oh so handsomely (there's just no limit on the number of times we can reinforce that point) -- the Villa will now travel to Swindon for a what should be an easy match against a League One side. The round is scheduled for the week of October 29.

Let's all remember, too, that this match will involve Paolo Di Canio. If you thought Roberto Mancini's choice words against Paul Lambert were funny, well, be sure you're paying attention to Di Canio in the run-up to this match. He is, shall we put it, slightly insane. Unfortunately, he's also known for his side's ability to upset the higher-ups. It would be just the luck of Villa to dominate City away and then contrive to lose to Swindon.
.
I'm sorry - but PdC is rarely disrespctful to opposition managers and usualy is in response to them attacking him

Like he did with Howe - I expect him to praise Lambert as a young manager who likes to play the game right

Great draw as like many have already said, it is very winnable, the game will come in between a home game v Norwich (Lambert will enjoy that one) and an away trip to Sunderland.
..
You'd expect them to be focusing on the Premier League game v Sunderland as that is one of those they need to win - they really won't fancy a trip to the County Ground.....and given Lambert's success rate to date it could be a "You're getting sacked in the morning!" chant night.....if he lasts that long.

Whenever I think of Villa, two things come to mind: the 3-0 drubbing we got from Forest at Villa Park in 1967 and the 2-0 win there against Tommy Docherty's side a year or two later. The managers had to walk round the pitch to the dug-outs there in those days. Docherty got a fair bit of stick from the Town fans as he walked in front of us behind the goal. Seem to recall that Rod Thomas got a rare goal that day.

1st remember the Cup game, standing in the Shrivenham Road right behind Stephen Froggat's left foot bullet into the top right hand corner that lost us the game that day.

Was so gutted went with a mate to the next match Grimsby away which was one of if not the worst nil nil I've ever witnessed. All part of what makes these times so special.

The 5 nil at Villa when some kid wanted protection money to look after my car. Dear oh dear. Didn't pay him and would have murdered him if he'd touched it after that defeat!

For what it's worth I'm assuming they show two games and I think ours will be the Tuesday night game. I'll be there so not bothered - they can always show us in the next round hopefully.

As Den says will be one heck of a game, Lambert is a very very good manager but he's often played reserves when at Norwich, so fingers crossed he makes the same mistake.

As for today - If the Villan had said we have been handed a very favourable draw as we head to league 1 opposition rather than Man U - then fair enough - its true!
.
Its the easy game comment and the last line - us to c0ck up (like we have no say!)
.
Had we got Bradford at Home - I would expect us to go through but wouldn't describe it as an easy game and for us to c0ck up
.
Also I was mainly refering to the comments about PdC and saying if you think Manchini was bad wait until you hear PdC
.
Yes he is insane and makes bizarre comments about driving the bus and his little chickens - but he has never been disrespectful to another manager in a build up (even his relatiation dig at Evans wasn't that disrespectful)
.
So why did he suggest he would be - because he is Italian? Let's not even open that can of worms!

Finally - I never named a single club when I said cr@ppy little clubs - so hard to affend anyone - when other put clubs names in that was THEIR views of them - NOT MINE!

PS when the prediction league results for Burnley game, finally entered and got score correct so might not be bottom any more!

Ah Denzil that was a drubbing by Forest eh? not a happy trip that one! If I'm not mistaken the second replay in a trilogy of 3? 0-0 at NF, 1-1 at the CG replay when it looked like we were going out until Bruce" I usually hit the clock" Walker let fly with an unstoppable shot that flew in the top corner of the Bank goal, and then the 3-0 -we never turned up game.

Not being biased or anything , but the way some of these top clubs treat this competition they dont deserve T.V. corverage let alone the extra revenue that comes with it . I`d rather watch a lower league team put out a full strength team and try to win the competition than watch Chelsea v Man Utd reserves treating the game as a kick about ?

The "sir don of these forums":) It was meant extremely tongue in cheek lol! but as a comparison it serves to illustrate just how easy it was/is for any league player to "hit the big time" of fast ladies ,cars and everything else. Sir Don had no more than a mild flirtation in more sense than one (allegedly!!!!) when he moved to CP- he's nowhere near the top of the pile and neither is CA - not when you take in those legends of Best, Marsh, Bowles, Collywobbles, Greavsie, Merse, Adams and a few more no doubt!

There is a serious side to this. I hope the club looks after the regulars, which to be fair, they usually do. However, there is 5 weeks to the Villa game and plenty of opportunity for others to become "regulars" - so to all those thinking they can just come for a one-off, I hope the club say you have to attend at least 2 of the 3 home leagues games during the intervening period to qualify for the Villa game (discounts are already on offer). Only then if there are any tickets left should they go on general sale. Problem solved.

Let's not even open that can of worms!
.
Finally - I never named a single club when I said cr@ppy little clubs - so hard to affend anyone - when other put clubs names in that was THEIR views of them - NOT MINE!
Cheers LR. I've seen your other post now. Won't continue that discussion here. As for the Villan, I think you are taking it all a little too much to heart. I read it as "it looks like an easy game on the face of it but PDC has shown that he can mastermind cup upsets..." And the other PDC stuff - he was saying that Mancini's comments were funny and PDC's are likely to be even funnier. I didn't find it offensive or disrespectful at all - just quite entertaining. Perhaps it's all a question of interpretation.

As long as we dont sell out of tickets rapidly and then a number of STFC fans are left unable to get tickets due to AVFC fans taking seats in our end I won't have any problem (And i can't see us selling out 100%)

Two good posts (couldn't quote both). Regular fans shouldn't miss out, and if the club could encourage more to come to the interim games, so much the better.

Having said that there was no issue getting Wigan tickets even a day or so before the game by all accounts (although it more or less sold out in the end) and that was on a Saturday - only difference I can imagine will be the Villa fans probably selling out more of their allocation. We'll need to offer them around 2000-2500 to satisfy the cup requirements. Midweek game, would expect them to bring at least 1500, possibly the whole lot. That will still leave around 12,000 available home seats - even though it's a big game, for a Tuesday night I reckon there'll be no major issue getting tickets.

Can't normally make it back for the midweek ones (away games always seem to be closer) but will be there for this - drive down, game, drive straight back, should be home before midnight. No beer though unfortunately :-( But hopefully heading back with a smile on my face!

Exactly. No disrespect to your Villa mates, but for Swindon, we need to convert marginal supporters. If the club anticipates the demand would be really high, then getting extra people through the gate for preceding games is a cracking idea, although it's not exactly cup final tickets they would be queuing for so not sure what the demand level would be if that was the requirement.

.
Wigan chose not - so home fans got it - but Villa are bigger and Birmingham is closer so they may well take it
.
Behind the "Big 5" this is probably the best draw - the TV revenue and exposure would be great but you know it won't be us on the box
I've never seen anything that says away fans have to be given a covered stand. We didn't give Charlton any covered area in the play offs. Gillingham never give any covered area to away fans.

I thought it was just 10% of the ground, and the bank more than covers this amount.

In fairness to Ellis he kept them debt free, a right rum pig-headed so and so according to many, but it was a club full of good assets when he sold it to Lerner, who I think is still learning about football in the Prem.

Loved your post though, and can see him doing it !!!

Sadly, just when you thought the days of the football hooligan were all but over, somebody emerges from the remnants of the days when yobs purported to be supporters when all they were, were thugs. Seems like Jibberjab and his crew!!(are you Pugwash in disguise....are you..etc) are a mutation of that genre.

Jibberjab if you unable to grasp the meanings of some of the words I have used in my post them please do ask me and I'll try to explain in a manner you might be able to understand.

Meanwhile try and recognise that real people that have real friends who may actually support another team, and when those two teams meet it is only natural for them to meet up/have a beer/claim the bragging rights and afterwards shake hands until the next time without beating the cr@p out of them to use your rather juvenile language. Do us and the club a massive favour- turn the other cheek (oh that's the cheek on your face by the way) because not only will you bring the club you allege to support into disrepute but you'll probably ensure a fine from the Football League/FA.

The only plus side would be that hopefully you'd receive a football banning order and the County Ground would once again be a safer place for everybody without your yobbish presence.

But you will have first dibs on your seat up to a date declared by the club, so that seat is yours for the taking by you for the first so many days after details are announced, no stub needed.
Dead right Wiz and exactly the right way tfor the club to go - S/T holders first - those with1,2, previous games next and then the free for all. Those that have supported the club by buying S/T's are entitled to first pick but the next lot are the regular attendees who pay match by match -so the stub idea works. As someone who falls into the latter category I fully accept I might not get a ticket if it was against the Mancs, Chelsea or the Arse.

I went on a corporate thing when they played Tottenham in the Ginola days. It was very prawn sandwich, but interesting at the same time. John Gregory was manager at the time and very begrudginly (I don't blame him) gave us a tour of the ground before the game. Ellis came in afterwards with Dion Dublin on his debut. Ellis came across as very arrogant and formed my view of him since. Also have yet to meet a villa fan that liked him (as a person). Ginola was class that day, far and away the best player on the pitch.

Some of what you say is true but football is tribal and there is segregation for a reason. I'm not saying it's right, but it inevitably boils over if there are away fans in the home enclosure or vice versa.

Also, football hooliganism has never gone away, it just moved out of the stadiums and into the surrounding streets as a result of CCTV.

Lionel - I accept all that but does that mean the that you can't sit with your mates just because they support the opposing club - football support is tribal and there's nothing wrong with the good natured banter between rival fans likw " we forgot that you were here etc" but that surely doesn't mean it is ok for morons like Jibberjab to beat the living daylights out of somebody regardless of what team they support. I think it's naive to think that opposing fans can sit together and support their respective teams without the high possibility of trouble. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just being realistic.

It's a bit like walking through the streets of Brixton at midnight with an iPad in your hand. You will be mugged and it would be stolen. Doesn't make it right, but you'd be bonkers to even try it.

Villa Park is a nice ground, has a lovely feel to it and the Holte end is such an impressive stand. The old man played there for Swindon boys in the 60's and often brings it up when debating who was the better footballer in the family.

Sadly some muppet aged about 30 thought it good to pick on an OAP and then proceeded to verbally abuse a number of people around us and then managed to get so aggressive and in your face that we ended up with two petrified young kiddies.

Testosterone fuelled chanting is always fine but I saw a Bristol Rovers fan kicked nearly to death in the Town End and it doesn't make you proud - No they shouldn't be there but it doesn't need certain responses.

Like the humour, and very true - idiots playing the hard man, would like to see how some of them would do down a mine or in a warzone. @£#% heads who like to make noise and cause trouble. I have no problem with opposition fans in the Swindon (or any other) section if they're respectful and don't cause a problem.

I would be annoyed if season ticket holders could buy five seats each, bring four Villa fans and keep town fans out though.

Anywhere I've been watching football I've had a chat with supporters of the other side, found some common ground a laugh. A bloke at Pompey had it right when I commented on how friendly they were, me thinking they were a "boisterous" lot. He said, if you come looking for trouble, you'll have it. If you come to watch football and have a laugh, you'll get that too. The reception you have (generally) depends on how you conduct yourself.

Been looking on the Villa fan site as well.

Some say its a tricky tie and beware, but the majority seem to think that it's a nailed on win for them. Beat City, will stuff the Town.

Think again. We are a tough nut to crack and, I think, getting tougher.

Whether Burnley underestimated us, I don't know. They supposedly studied all our players and tactics. They started brightly, but after Benno's effort, had no answer.

If Villa are serious about the cup and put up a good team then, yes they probably will get the result.

On the other hand, don't underestimate how seriously Di Canio is taking this Cup. He WILL do his homework and he WILL have strategy to neutralise them. In the end we feel that we have a great chance with this tie, but if we lose, then so be it. If Villa lose, they will be so devistated it will be shameful.

Whats PdC Stats against higher teams?

Me too... trawled the Villa fan sites... boring but able to confirm that Villa fans are an even more stupid variant of brummie than Birmingham City fans... hard to believe but true.
Anyway, they are on the whole optimistic... but cautously so.
I personally think that we have this in the bag and Villa will be "the next scalp".
Funnily enough I have a soft spot for the Villians... 24 years ago we played them on the last day of the season and that was the day I got married... only match I missed that year...
Anyway, I was on honeymoon in Malaysia the next week and the match highlights were shown in full... my new Mrs was not happy.... but just getting to see the reds draw 0-0 with the Villa from 7,000 miles away was for me.... PRICELESS :-)

Gillingham is a strange one and they must have an agreement - as it is only a "temp" stand and "unsafe" to house them elsewhere
.
I thought like all big away followings Charlton had both the Arkells and the bank for league and POs

Shame your really about 5'5 and fat....
I read the first post as tongue in cheek and a bit of fun....I hope I'm right on that one or....oh dear!!! ... I took my then 6yr old with his best friend also 6yr old and his Grandad (Hereford fan) into the Members for the Swindon v Hereford game...we all know how it wen but we don't blame OAPs sat in the Arkells for the team conceding and of course he cheered....they hadn't scored a goal in 5 yrs so when they got the 2nd to equalise he was really chiffed and vocal... ---. Sadly some muppet aged about 30 thought it good to pick on an OAP and then proceeded to verbally abuse a number of people around us and then managed to get so aggressive and in your face that we ended up with two petrified young kiddies. --- Testosterone fuelled chanting is always fine but I saw a Bristol Rovers fan kicked nearly to death in the Town End and it doesn't make you proud - No they shouldn't be there but it doesn't need certain responses. ----. Rant over and I'm going in the homoe end for Saturday's game v's Shrews & boy am I going to shout when we score!!
Sadly I don't think you were right old buddy that Jibberjab's post was meant tongue in cheek- it can't be can it because of the asterisk ridden content of the post.

Your experience is perhaps even more worrying because the events you describe also indicate a failure on behalf of the club's stewards to eject this yob? you don't say whether he was thrown out?

I totally agree that we don't need certain responses like Jibberjab's muppet (to use your wordlike attitude), .

There is absolutely no reason why we should not respect our fellow human beings is there? -regardless of which club they support.

Can't make this one so I hope you enjoy the "the homoe end for Saturday's game" - I thought the Shrew's had moved from Gay Meadow lol!! Make sure you bring back 3 points!

Doubt we'll see a response from Jibberjab -after all he's hardly got any valid argument eh?...and would probably need a dictionary to write a post without usibg an expletive,

He was ejected - the young Sir Richard intervened just as I was losing it - picking on OAPs and 6yr olds with foul mouthed aggression isn't something I'd expect, expecially from the Arkells.

Home end for Saturday was tongue in cheek - I'll be with our lot and shouting my lungs out.
...
Just spotted your Home End joke - very good :-) ...not sure going in the away end is any better on that score though?

Just hope you're walking straight and without any additional extras!?
....
Visiting the Portsmouth home end..with it being a Naval Town and all of that... you never know what unwanted bonuses you may be awarded!
