SWINDON TOWN: Benson urges focus ahead of Shrewsbury
6:00am Thursday 27th September 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Paul Benson
PAUL Benson admits that the old cliche “after the Lord Mayor’s Show” does have some substance within football, as he and his teammates try to prevent history repeating itself yet again when they travel to Shrewsbury on Saturday.
The Robins have struggled in the league in games immediately after big cup triumphs this season, with the victories over Brighton and Stoke preceding a clumsy goalless draw with Hartlepool and a hiding on the road at Preston.
Having seen off Burnley in the Capital One Cup in midweek, Swindon return to the nitty gritty of League One with a trip to Shropshire this weekend and Benson said Town’s players must work together to prevent their small bout of cup comedowns from becoming an epidemic.
He told the Advertiser: “We’ve got to learn from the experiences and the way we address training over the next few days. When we get in we’ve got to get our heads off winning as soon as possible. “The focus has got to be on Shrewsbury, we’ve got to be as professional as we can and try to block out all the memories and focus solely on getting three points at Shrewsbury.
“It’s disappointing we came off like we did at Stoke and against Brighton and follow-it up with sub-par performances, so we have to hope lightning doesn’t strike for a third time.
“I think (after the Lord Mayor’s Show) does exist. I think you can fester on results too long - whether it be a win or a defeat - so I think the gaffer’s right when he says you’ve got to cancel your last performance.
“It’s how you deal with that as an individual player. Hopefully we’ve learnt from our past two experiences and this time we’ll put in a performance that gets us three points.”

.
So I too would expect a few changes - not drastic though
.
Think the back 5 will remain - though depending on how fit (match) he thinks Troy is he may swap him with Ward
.
Expect a change in midfield with Ferry coming in - probably for Navarro
.
Also expect a change up top with Collins starting as it is Shrewsbury
.
The team is now settleing down and we are almost back to the "super 7" situation of last year
.
Wes, Macca, McEveley, Ritchie, Miller
Roberts and Williams being the 7
.
Thompson has a real chance now to make that 8 and I think he would prefer to have a settled CB pairing
.
So soon it could simply be who partners Miller/Williams in the middle and up top
.
Win is ideal obviously - but would be happy with a point away as long as we put in a decent performance

A team that beat Burnley ought to trounce Shrewsbury but Paolo knows that`s unlikely to happen. I expect a few changes to the starting eleven but still a strong bench ; and hopefully three more points to come back with !
---.
I hope Benson starts with Williams as their combined pace and closing down causes all sorts of issues to opposition defences.

Just noticed that the last 5 games between us have all finished 2-1 lets hope we get the 2 this time! :-)

Am really looking forward to Saturday though as it should be good football but want to see how we react to a big physical side again....was the Orient defeat a 'REAL' turning point?

Troy every day of the week for me and not sure he'll start with Si away from home with two wingers. Just a hunch.
Not expecting a win Saturday but hoping for one just like against Burnley.

Well done Dover that's the spirit - leave it to the main man. I know Paolo said never again after Stoke but have I dreamt he said he might keep it the same after the Burnley game because we were so good?

Miller and Ferry though were brilliant against MK - but we were at home and totally dominant!
.
Maybe PdC will think we can oppose ourselves on Shrewsbury and therefore go with that combo
.
If we get our noses ahead he can always bring Navarro on to sure it up
.
Thats the great thing about this season we have real options and leaving players out is not an easy call in pretty much every spot except GK!
.
My initial post by the way was not anti Navarro or Benson - it was just the changes I think might happen
.
Ferry and Navarro might work just as well - but seeing Miller has started every league game can't see him dropping out just yet
.
Maybe as the season goes on as his age will start to show as we saw with Benson - but not yet

And of course he had that out of character rant about the non-penalty in the game here last season. He was wrong to do it, as I think he admitted later, but let's be honest - every one of us would have been in a rage if that had happened to us. Decent bloke who lost his rag, that's all. Unless I've missed something of course.
Graham Turner has been far from complementary about Canioman, in fact quite rude in his comments, so I hope tactics are devised to make him eat his words due to the result. In short, I hope we play them off the park.

Sorry just caught your post from earlier. I know it was last season but he was doing his pundit bit and afterwards got stuck into us and had a general moan about the team and Canioman and had a right moan about anything he could. Some will no doubt remember it far better than me, but it stank of sour grapes. I thought he was better than that but what a right miserable 5od he turned out to be that evening.
Anyroad, I hope we do a number on them, practice for Villa, and as always the three points are most welcome.
