Paolo Di Canio celebrates last night
PAOLO Di Canio is lusting after a fourth-round clash with one of the juggernauts of English football after watching his Swindon Town side dump Burnley out of the Capital One Cup last night.
Goals from Paul Benson, Andy Williams and Troy Archibald-Henville sent Swindon cantering to a 3-1 victory over the Clarets, for whom former Town striker Charlie Austin found the net.
And Di Canio now wants to face a Premier League big boy in round four and thereby have the chance to “make football history” with the Robins.
“Everybody will try to see the draw and hope for some names, but from my point of you I would tell you I sign to play Manchester United away or Chelsea away, because on a big occasion it is not important if you lose 5-0 or 6-0,” he said.
“I don’t want to be part of a negative result. I am not mad if I say we like to play there, because even if there is only one chance in a million I would like to play there and make football history for this club with my players. Why not?
“I don’t know if it is easy to reach the final, maybe not, but maybe.
“I am not crazy and I don’t think about the final, but I think about Manchester United away or Chelsea away, or at home, but away is better.
“50,000 and lots of our fans able to come and see us, it would be a fantastic moment for everybody at Swindon. Even if there is one chance in 100 million, why not try to make history for this club.
“Losing 6-0 is not important, but if I see Manchester United away then maybe not.”
Di Canio was delighted with his team’s performance against Burnley, saying: “We are happy because we got through to the next round because maybe there is a chance to play in a fantastic stadium.
“But from my point of view the most important thing is the performance, and once again we went through not for accident but because we fully deserved it.
“We scored three goals and probably should have scored another three or four, but in the end we made an outstanding performance.
“I do not want to sound arrogant but today we can smile, not laugh, smile.
“They did very well and the team went well, but up front when the forwards run like they did it is expensive, because my football is expensive in terms of energy.”
The draw for the fourth round of the Capital One Cup is scheduled to take place at around 10pm tonight.

Did think for the first 20 mins Burnley were all over us.Yet we had 2 chances and got what counted 2 goals.
Sounded as if CA had put on a bit of weight and appeared to be a shadow of what he was when he was at the CG. Times have changed he has moved on and by all accounts a friend of mine who is a Director of Burnley say's he is well liked by the club and supporters so good luck to him.
Do hope Pdc and the Team get a decent draw, did like Pdc's post match interview, plus JW as usual came accross so well, we are fortunate to have such a chairman with vision.
So all in all WHAT A RESULT and fitness prevailed

Bring on the draw tonight, maybe then we can go back to talking about football, not who may or may not have slept with who (who cares?) or who's a better person (again, couldn't give a toss). Pathetic to have to listen to.
If you boys want to argue (not discuss, bicker like kids) then swap email addresses, go fight in the car park, whatever. The past few threads have been less 442 and more Heat magazine (or so the missus would tell me).
Austin in the past now? Good stuff, cheers.

But you are right that issue shouldn't take the shine off what was perhaps not a great performance in terms of putting on the style but certainly very good against a team that showed they can cause the opposition problems.

He seems to have a good ally in Troy and there was a lot being said between the two, hopefully Troy mentoring his positional play at times, all good to see..
First time I have seen Troy, must say he looks very much the man, and last night in this game he seems to have more to offer than Flint, especially in distribution and positioning.
I also noticed that yet again Jay's positional play at times was superb. It all seems to be coming together at last, thankfully.

Just another great night at the CG. So enjoyable watching our attractive football claim another big scalp. A great team performance but must highlight another sensational game for Nathan - boy does he tackle well- and the all round game of Andy Williams whose pace and direct running style is electrifying to watch and will terrorise so many defences this season. Also Paolo seemed relatively calm (for him) and while still showing all the drive and passion we love, there appeared a quiet self assurance. Love the clenched fist to the chairman at the end of every game and the thumbs up he gets from JW. Don 't want to get carried away but genuinely believe anything is possible with these two in charge.

Over the last two home games we have witnessed Nathan Thompson in superb form, why did we ever play Joe Devera, when this young man must have been chaffing at the bit to get a game ? I puzzled as to why, but anyway, long may he continue.

What a great team display again last night, Burnley looked good for the first 15 or so minutes but once we got going you could just see the quality in our team. Great to see williams score again, Old bighead just had too score but who cares. This team is most definitely going places under PDC. Hope we get a good draw in next round but i bet it will be Bradford lol.
Yes Williams is on fire now & I can see how he scored all those goals for Yeovil last season.
One player who is really standing out at the moment though is young Nathan Thompson. I thought we would struggle when Caddis left but I dont miss him now. Well done Nathan, keep it up lad.
Another good thing about last night was that when Charlie scored to make it 2-1 I was a bit worried that we would shut up shop but the Town went straight back on the attack & eventually got the 3rd goal that they deserved which killed the game off. Could have got another couple after that as well. Well done Lads another great win.

"Winnable" games are starting to become a rare commodity as we are now down to 16
.
Bradford would be the only real one you could put in that category - unless Carlilse were to cause an upset tonight
.
Don't think we can class Premiership sides as winnable really - yes we have more chance against Swansea than Man U - but Swansea will still be clear favourites
.
As we are very unlikely to win the cup (this is the first time we have reached this stage in 18 years - We had a certain Fjortoft playing then!) I want the glamour tie
.
I also want it away for 2 reasons
.
1 - Money the CG holds what 14,500 - so if we sold every ticket at 25 that gives revenue of 362,500 - 45% is therefore 163,125
.
An away tie at the Big 4 (Man City are out) say with 50,000 turning up would mean to get the same revenue they would only need to charge 7.25!
.
Now we can't charge 25 for ever ticket and they won't charge 7 - so the amount we would make from it is likely to be worth as much as 500k to us
.
Or in other words Troy and Collins or Wes and Rooney or Ritchie and Flint or Ferry and Caddis!
.
2 - is the same as PdC has said - lets have a grand day out
.
We rarely ever get to play at places like Old Trafford or Anfield - so lets go there and enjoy it
.
I said Arsenal for selfish reason - its London (Chelsea would do too) - but would be just as happy with Man U or Liverpool
.
However - if a home version was to get the TV crews in and we would get 100k or so from that - then a home tie could be good as we would still get £250k from it

His Dad (Fred?..can't remember) along with his Grandad were sat right in front of me and his Dad got really quite abusive when I got angry with Charlie for making the most of a challenge and feigning injury (form which he got up and sprinted the length of the field so he can't have been too bad).
---.
His Dad's opinion of Swindon fans was clear for all telling me to get into the Town End with the rest of the %$&£.
===.
Personally I'm happier as a Town fan now than since the Hoddle days - but then we looked good but we needed the one player, now we have a close knit team who don't go out starting fights in my local town, they don't throw abuse at fans at special events whilst under the influence of something, they don't go around sh4gging other player's wives and they don't think they are the big I am.

Don't get me wrong - as a player he is quite unique....but as a person and a squad member....I just hope he has improved.

Great performance last night. Thompson was my MoM although that award could easily got to several other players. Still not totally convinced by the Navarro/Miller partnership. Good to see Roberts play his best game for us so far. Williams is class. Macca (Ronadlo) should know better than going for a suicide mazy run, along with Jay (Red Mist). Also thought that Benson put in a tremendous shift, chasing anything and everything - the perfect professional.

Both took their goals well, but apart from his header in the first half, it was probably the only chance Austin got all game.
If the 6 games tonight go to form there will be 12 premiere teams left in the draw, would prefer a home tie against anyone, but if we have to travel hope it won't be to places like Sunderland, Newcastle or even championship teams Leeds and Middlesborough. Quite a trek to make for the fans to make for a mid week game.

Cherries were saying before Saturdays match that we were really a lowly L1 outfit that were not as good as we make ourselves out to be. Afterwards, that they the Cherries shouldn't be getting beat by teams like us.
When the 3rd round draw was made, Claret fans were not really relishing the tie against us, saying that they would be considered the underdogs.
As it proved last night. Although some of their fans are saying that we looked ordinary, they had no drive or no comitment. It was Swindon that wanted it more on the night.
When are oposition teams going to realise that hear at the Town something special is brewing. We are not a lowly club, our winning against higher ranked clubs is not a 'One Off'. We've done that, what, 8 times now under the guidance of PdC. I think we are still under the radar of some bigger clubs, but it wont be long before everone is talking about the Town and not just about that "unpredictable, pasionate, gesticulating Italian bloke''
When we win this league, when we get to the quarters of this cup, and maybe beyond, people will know this club means business.

I understand all the stuff about Charlie Austin, but last night was really about Swindon Town. A brilliant performance from front to back, for 90 minutes. It was very hard to pick a man of the match, but for me Nathan Thompson was outstanding "again", we have a real replacement for Paul Caddis there. Williams and Benson pulled the Burnley defence all over the place, backed up by Roberts and Ritchie. I think Andy Williams is easily our best striker, strong and certainly has an eye for goal. Our back 4 were strong and Wes is getting back to normal too, thank god !, Well done Troy with your first goal at SN1. Just a mention for those on the bench, what a lineup that is too. I am a big Simon Ferry fan and wish he could be included more regularly, but when our team play that well I can understand why he can only make the bench. As much as I wish for a big home clash in the next round of the cup, I also wish for a good performance at Shrewsbury on Saturday to put this "after the cup giant killing" voo-doo to bed. Fantastic result, a great game, total entertainment for £15..I am proud to be a town fan...Come on You Reds !!
...
Have to say that the options we have going forward are excellent, different types of players most with pace and all with high fitness levels.
-
When a team find a way to stop the forwards then Roberts and Ritchie step in stop all four then PDC switches tactics and everything changes again.

So nice to watch decent football again....and so exciting! Am off up to Shrewsbury (first away league game this season - Stoke only other game) and if they play the same way, even Shrewsbury will be wondering what is happening.

But Cup Football was, maybe is and still should be above all that. Cup competitions should be seen for the history making, for the glory, for the giant-killing matches. Cup competitions shouldn't be about the money, its about the dreams, the desire, the "we can do this". It should be the "We're Up For The Cup".
Swindon has the drive, motivation, desire, the passion. Thats why we have excelled this season in the L Cup so far - forget the JPT match, 'cos thats what cup football is all about, the lower club beating a team higher up the structure.
We are writing history, but for it to be remembered we need to progress further.
1969, Div 3 Swindon beating Div 1 Arsenal. The first and only time that a club outside the top 2 tiers has lifted the League Cup.
Can it happen again - surely not.

I think we are still under the radar of some bigger clubs, but it wont be long before everone is talking about the Town and not just about that "unpredictable, pasionate, gesticulating Italian bloke'' When we win this league, when we get to the quarters of this cup, and maybe beyond, people will know this club means business.

Also thought that Benson put in a tremendous shift, chasing anything and everything - the perfect professional. . Question. Do we get any money for progressing to the last 16 in this competition?

Some including Wiz are waking up to how good Troy is. Always seems to have time on his hands which with his calm authority marks him.
Young Nathan everyone is raving about but bar his silly yellow I thought Jay was even better. Wes is Super Sir Wes so no problems there.
We are looking brilliant all over the park and the bench and who's left in the stand is ridiculous.
I'd like a big Premiership club rather than a Swansea etc. I think they will under estimate us and play at best half a side and I genuinely believe they do that at their peril. That said Loyal has pointed out we played Bradford 68/69 so let's have them at home in the next round and deal with the big boys from Quarter final onwards.
We're winning the league.
Back to back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend. Isn't he already?! Build a statue of him when he takes us to the Premiership.

It's such a pity that so many clubs fail to take the two proper cup competitions seriously now. Their attitude damages the integrity of the competitions, and it filters down to produce poor attendances like last night's. Some people may regard a turnout of about 7,000 to be decent. I thought it was poor considering the fact that it was always likely to be a keenly contested tie against higher opposition and with the added attraction - whatever you think of him - of Austin's return. And I am not having a go at people who find it hard to get there for whatever reason.

My son and I were at the match last night, but due to illness my younger son couldn't go -can't go to school, cant go out, etc... So with spare ticket my son invited his mate from Uni to come along. He's never been to the CG and apart from the TV, Town v B&H never seen the Town play. Also, being dutch, had not seen a UK football match from the stands. He thoughly enjoyed it, didn't know the saga of CA baggage, but he said, with all the booing and chanting even he was starting to hate the guy. Thought the town were immence and 3 realy cracking goals. We were 4 rows from the touch-line in the DR, just where Jay Mc put the free-kick into the box for the 3rd. The clenched fist salute that JMc gave the fans when TAH put the ball in the net was priceless and something he/we will remember for a long time.
After the match, my son and his mate were in a well known fast food establishment, and who should be in there - well remember, no names, no pack drill - but a Swindon Town player - I think it was salad and water he ordered!!!! - Anyway, my lad in his Town shirt, was talking to him, great match, good win etc...
Then his mate, not knowing anything about recent past events, and I must apologise now for him, for he knows not what he is saying....
"So, is it into the town to celebrate the win with some of your team-mates then? "
With steam surpressed and the Red Mist controlled, it was a quick "No".

I hope the club recognises first, those who turned up last night if we do get a big draw and not just the usual season ticket holders only (of which I am one).
The more I think about it, the less I want a big club in the next round. I would much rather see a game against another club fielding its strongest side and trying its best than be guinea pig opponents for Manchester United reserves to test themselves against.

Miller and Navarro are two fantastic defensive midfielders and are used in order to stop teams through the center of the pitch. Thats why they often play and we see Ferry come on later in the match to completely change the complexion of the match.

Ramsbury - the reason is about 500 games experience!
.
They have been there an done it - we really missed Navarro at Pompy - its no coincidence they came back in to it a few minutes after he had to go off
.
You could say the same about Benson - why time for him but not Collins last night?
.
All have a part to play and will do over the season - Ferry ended up with most appearances in total last year and had the same questions raised at this time last year
.
Den - don't forget that Man U reserves are still a hell of a lot more attractive than anything Bradford, Boro, Leeds or Swansea can put out
.
No disrespect to them but Man U reserves are still packed with international stars - remember when their "understrength" side got knocked out by Palace last season it still had NINE internationals in it!
.
Their Reserve back 4 still contains 2 England Internationals worth £40m in Jones and Smalling!!!
.
Same for Chelsea and questionably Arsenal
.
Also to be fair to the big boys - as they have such demand the attendances are still usually very high
.
Coutesy of a 30 second wiki search on last years competition it shows Arsenal had 46k against Shrewsbury in this round last year
.
Man U weren't at home until the QF - but got over 50k in for Palace
.
Agree 7k did seem poor for a reduced price cup game against higher league opposition
.
Guess higher league doesn't mean much unless they are glamourous - though I'm guilty of that too as don't do home games midweek due to cost and travel times - but am more likely to try for Man U etc than Burnley

Regarding Navarro and Miller. I’d prefer to see Ferry and Bostock in although how can you change a winning side now? Still, Miller does go about his work quietly and efficiently. I think Navarro is a little short of pace and may be found out in the end. Also good to see Roberts fulfilling his potential even though I’ve yet to see him put in a tackle – but hey, that’s not his job.

To be fair, I didn't think we were particularly fantanstic against Bournemouth or Burnley but we were still too good for them.
- I think we were fantastic last night, because it is rare to see teams attacking with skill and flair, while still being mean at the back.
As SeanG92 touched on, the way he mixes the defensive side of Navarro's and Miller's play with Ferry's attacking flair is a joy to watch. With Bostock itching to get involved, we will surely see more of the flair.

Oh just another thought.
You'd rather slag a fan who has thrown money; hundred and hundreds of pounds over the years into the Club, as have many many thousands of other fans over a big headed player...
Who wouldnt p1ss on us if we were on fire, and did what he did.....
We should be sticking together and appreciating each others points of view........
Not making personal insults....
But i suppose thats the measure of you isnt it..........
You support dear old Charlie Boy......but someone who genuinely loves the Club and always has, and only wants the best for the Club is just scum to you.......
Look in the mirror you silly person.
Louis :-((((

His Dad (Fred?..can't remember) along with his Grandad were sat right in front of me and his Dad got really quite abusive when I got angry with Charlie for making the most of a challenge and feigning injury (form which he got up and sprinted the length of the field so he can't have been too bad).
---.
His Dad's opinion of Swindon fans was clear for all telling me to get into the Town End with the rest of the %$&£.
===.
---.
Don't get me wrong - as a player he is quite unique....but as a person and a squad member....I just hope he has improved.
===.
Happy Days are back at Fortress CG!
I know he's an amazing player, but i just know that he needs alot of growing up to do......
We should be all sticking together, not slagging each other off because of a flippen past player......
I'd choose Mustard Red over Charlie any day of the week...even after the abuse and insults against me ...
Because he's a STFC fan and i'll always forgive a fan.....to a point that is.......
I Hope we can all band together and enjoy another rollacoaster season thats ends in promotion and glory for all invloved!!!

Is it just in the JPT that the rule applies about the limited number of changes?
Man U and Arsenal ... 11 changes each from the teams that played at the weekend.
Talk about diminishing the Cup !!!!!!

Another Claret and Blue what a decent draw and at home can't ask for more than that if we want to get into the last 8. I suppose IF we can beat Villa then may be that elusive big one Paolo mentions could be in the next round but remember STFC fans this lot turned over last seasons champions Man City and at City too so lets not under estimate A Villa. Any team that can beat City deserves respect but the way Paolo is firing up his team at the moment anything can happen.
