No happy return for Austin as Town down Clarets
6:00am Wednesday 26th September 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Charlie Austin scored but could not inspire a Burnley win at the County Ground last night
CHARLIE Austin scored on his return to the County Ground but ended up on the losing side as Swindon Town marched into the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time since 1994/95.
The former Swindon striker received plenty of verbal stick from the home crowd throughout, and was frequently reminded that his current side were losing, as he came back to his old club for the first time since his £1.2million move to Turf Moor in January last year.
And those chants would no doubt have been ringing in his and his Burnley teammates’ ears as they made the long trek back to the north west having been dumped out of the competition by lower league opposition.
Swindon played well throughout a game that oozed Championship calibre and enhanced their remarkable reputation as giant-killers under Paolo Di Canio.
The Robins had Paul Benson, Andy Williams and Troy Archibald-Henville to thank for the goals which secured their eighth victory over higher-ranked opponents under Di Canio’s reign, with Austin’s strike with 15 minutes remaining rendered utterly redundant.
The Town fans were reminded that while Austin is very much the past, this Swindon team is set for a bright future.
The hosts were given an early warning of Burnley’s attacking potential in the third minute, when Kieran Trippier’s corner from the right was dummied through to Austin who lashed over from 15 yards.
The striker should have at least hit the target but, as if the home side needed any reminding, it showed Austin’s uncanny knack of finding space in the area.
Three minutes later the bricklayer-turned-goalscoring machine used a different aspect of his game to come so close to edging Burnley in front.
Ross Wallace’s corner floated into the box where Austin outmuscled his marker to rise highest and head goalwards. Only Alan Navarro’s clearing boot on the line kept Swindon’s clean sheet intact.
Chris McCann thought he had nudged the Clarets ahead in the ninth minute, steering home after Austin had miskicked Marvin Bartley’s cross, but the linesman’s offside flag cut short his celebrations.
Having sponged up the pressure in the early minutes, Town soon discovered a natural rhythm and with their first shot on goal took the lead in the 19th minute.
A short corner routine from the left ended with Jay McEveley whipping the ball in from the left.
The Burnley defence stood and stared, as if waiting for each other to lay laces to leather, and Benson took advantage to calmly sweep home with his left foot - a sublime finish that lifted the County Ground crowd off their seats.
The fans in the Town End were quick to mock Austin with chants of ‘Charlie, Charlie what’s the score?’ The ex-Town frontman was almost able to turn around and say ‘1-1’ seconds later, but Chris McCann could only direct his header from Austin’s cross straight at Foderingham as the Clarets set out in search of a quick response.
Burnley looked the more composed on the ball when they had it at feet but Swindon remained resolute defensively, and Austin became more and more anonymous as the period progressed.
With such a solid foundation, the Robins had given themselves the perfect platform from which to launch the odd assault on the visitors’ goal.
While frequently the Town forays into opposition territory came to nothing, with three minutes left of the first half one particular attack came to another glorious conclusion.
David Edgar’s poor pass out of defence fell to Tommy Miller who stayed strong in the tackle to release Williams.
Until a week ago the former Yeovil striker seemed to be cursed in front of goal, but over the course of seven days he has transformed into the clinical finisher he was hired to be and he made no mistake in sliding the ball beneath Brian Jensen to send Swindon into the break two goals ahead.
After the break Town quickly got back into the flow they had established in the first half, Ritchie’s free-kick from 18 yards, after Benson was hauled down, flew off the wall and out for a corner.
Navarro then saw his shot stopped by Jensen before Foderingham produced a sensational save at the other end to keep Swindon two goals ahead.
Trippier’s fizzing free-kick from deep on the right flew to the back post where substitute Sam Vokes’ point-blank header seemed destined for the bottom corner, only for the Robins keeper to spread himself wide and push the ball to safety.
Williams, full of confidence, showed the Burnley defence his Road Runner impression to ghost into the area in the 58th minute, but the former Yeovil man could not find the unmarked Roberts for an easy tap-in.
Evidently unhappy at the prospect of having to settle for two and shut up shop, Swindon risked being stretched in midfield to find a killer third goal.
It almost worked when Roberts picked out Ritchie at the back post, but the winger’s diving header was well-saved by Jensen.
But it was the visitors who were next on the scoresheet, and if Burnley were going to register it was only ever going to be through one man.
Vokes crossed low from the right and his inch-perfect pass fell into the stride pattern of Austin, who danced around Foderingham to tap home.
In the previous round at Stoke, Town had held a two-goal lead at the break only to be forced into extra-time and the Robins were desperately trying to avoid a repeat situation as Burnley piled on the pressure.
Thompson blocked Austin’s neat shot on the turn and, while Williams almost notched his second with a curling shot from the edge of the area, the Clarets were largely on top.
However, Town sealed victory and progression to round four with six minutes remaining.
McEveley’s free-kick from the left was low to the back post and, though Archibald-Henville’s header lacked power, it somehow squirmed through the grasp of Jensen.
There was still time for Swindon to go close to notching a fourth. Simon Ferry, on for Navarro, cantered into the area and his teasing cross picked out Roberts whose deflected effort was hacked off the line by Trippier.
But in the end three had to do.

Despite being booed most of the match, and despite not celebrating after he had scored for Burnley, Charlie Austin was gracious in defeat applauding all corners of the County Ground including the Town End.
His actions speak far louder than any of your callous words, and in my opinion (because some of you wanted it yesterday), Charlie Austin is a better person than you!
Thats the funniest post i've read for a long time.......

Oh bless him....did he not celebrate, oh that makes his past personal & transfer actions ok...

Good luck to the fella; but he left bitter taste in most fans mouths when he left our Club , and I for one will not forgive what he did.

......which brings me to the question of the obscenities from the Town End. Normally, I am a great fan of the Town End crowd. They are always very vocally supportive and have provided many wonderful moments of inventive wit and humour but I do wish they would remember that we are a family club with a great majority of supporters who find such behaviour totally distasteful.
No doubt I shall now be abused for for my comments!

He came here very much the boy, and at times behaved like one, taking his chances both on and off the field and earned himself that reputation, and rightly so, if you play away from home and get caught then thats what happens.
It seems to me that since leaving he has now learned from his mistakes and has become Charlie Austin the man, no longer the trowel in one hand and cycle rack shorts held up by the other.
He weathered a storm of verbals all evening, but realised it was from a minority who needed to get it out of their system, but he had a message for the rest, he can still score a goal, do it with grace, not milk it for glory and remembered those who cherished him for such a brief but all important part of his career and applauded them to underline that. He probably went away with mixed feelings, and maybe to a point is envious of what is happening here right now, and maybe asking the question, what if things had been different.
There is no doubt he had a murky past here in his private life, but much of that was down to bad management who should have mentored him far better, but its all gone now. Good to see him having time with Ritchie and Ferry after that final whistle.
Charlie Austin left and was still a boy, last night he returned very much Charlie Austin the man, well done.

I'm a season ticket holder in the Don Rogers and last night a couple of 5 year olds were copying everything that was sung. It was sick. All the adults (including what must have been their parents) just sat and cringed uncomfortably. As many posters always point out, we are a family club and I can guarantee there are many parents leaving their kids at home (our future supports) because they don't want to expose them to the hateful and abusively language we all heard yesterday. If we want a large future support we have to get new kids into the ground.
I don't for a second suspect those that sing foul abusive chants to change, but those around them should drown them out with something witty or supportive instead. Alternatively point them out so if the club wants to take action they know who it is.
I don't know if the club has a policy on this but as fans we should take responsibility into our own hands to kick this out.
Great game though. With attacking threats all over the pitch it's going to be a very enjoyable season.

Then again, I don't want to live in a world where you can't have a bit of banter, occassionally let out a curse word at a football match for fear of getting kicked out of the ground, or generally enjoy a game rather than just sit in silence, clapping politely when a goal's scored like we're at a bloody tennis match or something.
Every player gets a bit of stick, yeah there is some stuff which deserves people getting in trouble for (we all know the examples I'm.thinking of) but generally it should be taken in good humour. Do you want the club gentrified to the extent that people can't come and sing or have a laugh at the game? There're enough soulless, prawn sandwich brigade clubs out there, I'm sure no-one wants that for Swindon.
Fully behind you on not allowing foul or abusive chants, but would need to know what you consider offensive. As you say, fans who don't want to hear it could get behind the team a bit more and drown them out. Going away we always manage to sing loud and keep it clean, if more did this at the county ground there'd be no problem.

99% of people myself included aren't offended by the swear words in songs. However I did take offence last night when these really young kids were copying it. My opinion is that it's not needed and can't be a positive progression for those kids or the club as a whole.
I really hope there are more original songs, louder and prouder and a deafening roar that puts the fear into the opposition. That's what we want to experience. It can be achieved even better with wit, passion, support and enthusiasm. It may seem harmless to sign abusive songs but there's much better ways to support the team and still have a great atmosphere.

long with everyone else, I've heard all of the rumours about what he was supposed to have done off-field before leaving us - however, the reaction of his ex-team mates towards him made me wonder how true they were.
Flint, Ferry & Ritchie seemed very friendly with him.
As for the abuse towards him, I honestly don't see the point - all it will do to a good player (and Charlie Austin IS a very good player) is make them play better.
If things continue to go well for us this season and we go up, there's even an outside chance we could be in a position to tempt Charlie back to the County Ground. Would we want him?
I know that I would - he's a brilliant player.

Have to agree chrystovski, I believe I saw him make that gesture. However, not condoning but he was got at by our fans all game - it had to have wound him up.
The rights and wrongs, the truths and the hype, all that has gone before concerning the Austin saga can be discussed on and on and on. However, my opinion - on the pitch he was brilliant for us - I remember the Crawley game at the CG when CA was the only one who put in any effort at all.
He came back, got some stick (agree that some chants were fankly unnecessary) worked hard for Burnley but it wasn't enough. We were mostly the better team on the night and the result was a fair reflection. So, bring on a big side and we go marching on!!

I am a very vocal TE supporter and have to say I was defending Austin yesterday and I did not boo or chant once against him, what he did at the end of the game showed maturity after the stick he had and IMO a touch of class, I always look to see if he has scored for Burnley and personaly feel he is a class player and one of the best forwards I have seen play for this club.

.
Just one final word from me on Austin. I really believe that he would rather have stayed with us but realised it would have harmed his career prospects to stay with a club that was going down faster than a whore's drawers. I watched him closely in the last game he played for us and I had a good look at his facial expressions as he left the pitch that night. He was a man sad to be going but a man who knew he had to be going.
.
Louis, I notice that today you have used the word "allegedly" in relation to Austin's past. Very wise. Anyone can allege anything - and they very often do if they think it helps to bolster their case against someone. Hope you didn't have too many beers and fall asleep listening to the commentary! Also hope you are enjoying Harrogate. Only been there once - for a wedding reception at the Old Swan. Very nice town.

Fingers crossed for a good draw tonight.

Classier individuals who were also great players for us in recent years (cox, parkin) will always get a great reception becasue they treated the club and fans with respect and left at a time that was mutually acceptable for STFC and their career progression.
.
As for the songs to Austin being offensive, jesus christ. For a football crowd it was pretty mild. I've heard so much worse.
.
What were the parents of the 5 year olds who were copying songs doing?
.
Final comment on Austin is that he is unrecognisable from the player who broke into our 1st team a few years ago. His all round game is so much better. I might not respect him much as a person but as a footballer I think he's heading to the premier league.

Why not challenge the parent(s)? Why were they at a midweek game on a school night? My younger kids never go to school night games no matter who we are playing.
As for chanting, I'm afraid it is part of the exciting game, no matter how unsavoury, and better than any other sport on the planet. My kids know that, and woe betide if they copy swear words etc.
Perhaps I should think about going to rugby and listening to radio 4 zzzzzzzzzz

Swindon's players commented afterwards on the key role of Paulo's strategy, having first gained a good knowledge of how we play and how to nulllify our strengths. Worked perfectly, whereas Howe claimed beforehand to have done the same...didn't have much affect. For the first 20 minutes we looked good going forward, but that evaporated after their first. Jittery, disorganised rearguard, no creativity, ambition or energy. Otherwise known, as put pefectly by a Swindon fan, as dross.

Some players, Mooney, thrive on the crowds abuse. Others wilt. I still remember stories about Rodney Marsh asking to be subbed off when he came here with I think Fulham because our crowd were all on his back with a chant about him being gay.
Now I'm going to take a random guess that most of the guys now in their 50s and 60s were around then. Did it stop any of you taking your kids? Or stop your dad's taking you? It didn't stop my dad bring all his sons. And the current crowd sure won't stop me bringing my son. What stops that is he's a blood bad luck charm. 3 games 3 defeats no more games for you young man.

We are constantly, so it seems, bringing in good players who perform. Last season we had a raft of good goal scorers, and this season looks as if that vein will continue. We have just got Troy back from injury, and hey-ho, first game back, and right at the right time, BANG, a much needed goal which effectively sealed the game.
We have recently blooded a new full back who in the last two games has not only excelled but surpassed all expectations. Williams has found his scoring boots and last night we scored three good solid goals and bless him, try as he may, Ritchie didn't get his name on the sheet as goal scorer, but his input was massive as was that of Roberts and many others.
As if that is not enough, the guy we all want to see, Bostock has yet to make an appearance.
I think we can forget Austin, as he was a one man show, we now have a whole raft of players who can all score goals, and will almost certainly do so. There were goals in every player last night, not just Benson and Williams at the front, but from the back Troy proved that.
Time to consign Austin, and his deeds, good, bad and indifferent to where they belong, the history book.
After last night I think we can be assured we are now on the radar, and the teams above are now all looking over their shoulders, we are coming to get you !
Roll on Saturday and another three points, Game on.

I thought his applause at the end of the game, with the Swindon shirt over his shoulder, did him credit, and you could see his old mates held little grudge (I think those he especially didn't get on with are long gone). Also, he was their most dangerous player by a mile, and I was not surprised (or even disappointed, to be fair) when he scored.
He still has a edge to him, and one that occasionally cuts boths ways, but he's a special player one way or another and I'm glad he played for us.
Now, as the mantra goes, onwards and upwards!

long with everyone else, I've heard all of the rumours about what he was supposed to have done off-field before leaving us - however, the reaction of his ex-team mates towards him made me wonder how true they were.
I know that I would - he's a brilliant player.

ity etc? I mean come on. There's properly offensive, and there's offensive to the sort of people who find Last of the Summer Wine a bit "edgy." Can be a fine line sometimes I'll grant you but it shouldn't be all or nothing, we should be in a position to give a bit of banter and know where the line is.
Basically in an ideal world we wouldn't even be having this discussion, people would know better.

Have to say some of the posts on here today about Austin are pathetic don't guve me that **** that he conducted himself well last night the guy stuck two fingers up to us in the don stand and if he conducted himself half As much as he did last night when he was here then we wouldn't be having this debate. I for one am glad the majority last night gave the guy the stick he deserved. End off.
As usual, just like this forum, it was the vocal minority that made their point. I was glad that Charlie, in the main, showed a lot more class than the town end did.
As regards the 'v' sign - that was silly at worst but lets not forget that it was only a couple of seasons ago that Matt Ritchie did something verbally similar to his own fans, so lets not make too big a deal of it.

Since he has gone to Burnley i feel he has grown up and i expect Eddie Howe has changed him alot. Im sure if Austin was under di canio he would be a better person, i wouldnt be suprised if we got prmotion next year to championship that di canio wouldnt try to sign him as he does score goals.

The £1.2m only really came to light yesterday as before it was reported to be around £1.6m mark (unless we have £400k of add-ons potentially to come like we did with Cox)
.
But 20% is the usual sell on - and you are right it is only ever on the profit section
.
Still another £360k would do nicely!
.
Though if they did pay that extra £400k it would drop to £280k sell on - but still be more in the long run
.
Den don't think even our money men would fund a £3m+ move
.
No fan of Austin as said yesterday but do want him to do well and get a big money move like Rodriquez or Rhodes as STFC will benefit from that as we see above

I dont comment on here regular but i must say something about the abuse Charlie got yesterday, I was at the game and felt some of the abuse was uncalled for, dont get me wrong i love a bit of banter and reminding Charlie of the score and things like that are fine but when we are singing "we hate charlie Austin" in less polite terms and talking about him "doing ya wife" i do wonder if it was needed, he did leave on bad terms but hes a young lad, hes not a 29 year old pro whos lived a life and played the game and then shown no loyalty but at the same time i think he did handle this terrible at the time, but we are doing well now so why worry about the past? Charlie is a good player we all know it, we all seen it and we all experienced great highs and regretfully a few lows with him, but Banter is one thing, and Abuse is another, I assume if we got Bradford in the next round that Alan Connell will get a great response on this basis? but let me guess... some people will give him abuse too just because he used to play for us... is that right? NO! So lets just support OUR team and let the opposition fans worry about their players...

I thought it was a credit to the players on both sides (and the ref?) that it didn't become a flashpoint.

If I'd had to guess the crowd I would have said about 1,000 more than was announced. Reminds me of the old days, when the club fiddled the attendance figures so they could understate income. You could hear a laugh go round the ground when they announced the crowd! It was obvious what they were up to. I'm not saying our board are so unscrupulous - or so stupid.

.
My remark about the contract was Collins went there gave his all over a number of years, helped them up but then chose to move on at the end of his contract - to me nothing wrong with that
.
Technically no different to Bodin rejecting a deal at us - don't agree it was best for him but doesn't leave a bitter taste
.
Had JC demanded a move in Jan and then put in a request when Shrewbury said no - I would fully understand why their fans would be p1ssed off - especially as they may have been L2 now had he!
.
I'm sorry but I don't buy it was going to harm CA's career line - the career which saw him on a building site only 12 months earlier!
.
Yes I know the Bouremouth wanted him but were in an embargo - but why had no one else signed him between then and October when we got him?
.
Why were no others in for him when we did if he was that hot a property?
.
I just felt he owed us at least the season - he could have kept us up like Cox and left with Hero status like Cox
.
That's why I see those 2 differently
.
As for windows I personally think the window should shut prior to the season starting
.
I think we should then have a winter break and the next window should be in that break
.
It allows managers to focus on deals more and bed new players in better
.
Loans should still be allowed in between as clubs need them as can't all have massive squads
.
I don't think players should always see out deals - but it needs to be more mutual
.
A player can be in contract but it be right for them to move on for both
.
Parkin and Cox prime example. Ritchie should we not go up next summer would enter that situation too for me
.
I just think players should respect their employers more and not request moves to force it through when not right for the club
.
Modric last summer is an example - Spurs said no and he still had an excellent season
.
Let's remember they are not regular employees and can't be released on a months notice like we can
.
Also lets not forget those who left us could easily have said no and saw out their deals (Whalley and Razor did!) but instead negotiated pay off so would be better off than us if made redundant or sacked

Mind you, this was the ref that cannot, would not and refused to administer anything like the stipulated 10yd rule. To further compound matters he then cards players for asking for that. He blew for the foul, he should see it through with the same application. Clearly he was not up to the task.
Sadly the whole game these days is not supported by refs who are up to the challenge. That said the one we had on Saturday was better than most, but what will Canioman make of Trevor Kettle ? I think he will be doing cartwheels and back-flips on the spot, LOL. We played Orient that day and he red carded sh1t-bag-Sheehan. It ended up all square 2-2. Debacle of a game with him in charge. The sending off of AS was about all he did get right that day.

So then Wiz -your opinion of referee's infallibility is well documented on these forums and my take is that overall your general opinion of the man in black is lowr than a snakes belly?
Pray please do tell what your panacea to cure all refereeing ills might be? Do we have cameras installed to cover every conceiveable angle -thus being able to do away with the linos?
I'll always be a fan of the man in the middle making the decisions -and some you'll win some you won't.-isn't that all part and parcel of the beautiful game?

I look forward to Villa game.
Lets put the CA thing to bed and good ridance to the fella....

The man in the middle does have a very difficult job to do, I have never disputed that, but he should also have the courage of his convictions, and in a Cup game such as this assert his authority from the start. It makes for an easier game all round.
Stricter reffing from the outset puts players where they need to be, in no illusion to what is going to happen should they stray over the line. We have had many good refs in this country, and its all about respect, and if they put their foot down early in the game, it normally goes to a higher standard as the players use their skill potential.
Now, I'm looking forward to Villa, I'm finishing my beer and then bed, so I'll say a polite goodnight. Hope you enjoyed the game last night as much as I did. Cheers.
