It's not all about Charlie

Charlie Austin Charlie Austin

PAOLO Di Canio has reminded his Swindon Town players that Burnley are not just a one-man team, despite all eyes focusing on the return of Charlie Austin tonight.

Austin arrives in Swindon for the first time since joining the Clarets in a £1.2million deal in January 2011, and his potent goal threat will undoubtedly be under the microscope during the build-up to the Capital One Cup third round encounter at the County Ground .

However, while acknowledging the 23-year-old’s abilities in the final third, Di Canio stressed that Burnley are not a Championship side purely because of Austin’s goalscoring feats.

“In the last game he scored twice and in the game before they lost at Leicester and he wasn’t in the game. It means he’s a crucial player in the last two years,” he said.

“I’ve watched the clips. I don’t know exactly his record but every two games I see him celebrate so it means he’s on fire.

“He’s not a very elegant player to watch but he’s a competitive guy, he’s got physical presence, in the box he’s a killer and we have to be really careful.

“It’s not about him, it’s about the way his teammates feed him that we have to be careful of. There will be a situation in the box where we have to mark him man for man, but you can give minimum chances to opponents like that if you work as a team, as a unit.

“It’s not all about him as all around the field there are players who can cause problems to us. They play football in a positive way.

“He is one of the dangermen for them.”

Di Canio expects Austin to get a good reception from the Town crowd just as he was welcomed back to his former clubs over the course of a long and distinguished playing career.

“He deserves it,” he said. “He did a good job. He always fought for his place and in the game. Before the game it is okay, I hope they are not going to sing his name during the game because this is an extra lift.

“Two seconds and then forget and then start to sing the name of our players.

“Everybody deserves a good reception when they go to place where they played. It happened to me in a million places, why not to him?

“It happened to me at Celtic, West Ham, Charlton, AC Milan, Juventus - there was not one group of fans who blamed me when I moved there.

“Maybe Sheffield Wednesday because I left in a strange way but even not there because I always did a good job. I wasn’t the best but I gave my best, my heart, and Charlie Austin is one of those players, in the way he plays he gives everything.”

Me neither - Just ask Dave Lucas what he thinks, anyone who can destroy a team spirit and break a winning side the way in which he did deserves nothing but contempt.

I want us to stuff that stupid northern club tonight -

Williams - 1, Collins 2, Ritchie 1

Score: 4 - 0 again the Town!!!

Speaking of Austin, I see Dave Lucas has a contract with Birmingham City this season. Best of luck to him.

Sorry but I have no respect for Austin, the way he repaid the club and the manner in which he toted his services in that transfer window was nothing short of disgraceful. He may have been good on the pitch but his behaviour off it left a bad impression with many.

I don't think he owes us anything as he did well fir us, however we certainly owe him nothing at this stage either, and the manner of his leaving left a sour taste. Would love it if he had a nightmare tonight, after that he can score as many as he wants for Burnley, don't really care.

Won't boo him or anything but got an inkling a small section of our support might.

I hope he gets boo'ed relentlesly, he was the main problem within the dressing room and split the team. His antics around the pubs and clubs didn't do him any favours either.
I'm grateful for the effort and goals in his early days here but got way to big for his boots.'

You heard that he was forced to leave ! I heard that he was advised to leave ! What fan really knows the truth ? What is true that he is a ruddy good striker and I shall be very surprised if he doesn`t score tonight. He is a very different proposition to Tubbs as our defence will soon find out if they make any mistakes. One thing seems certain to me and that is that there will be a darn good game at the CG tonight and hopefully Swindon will emerge as the winners ! Charlie Austin did more for Swindon Town in half of the 2010/11 season than most of the others put together in a whole season. He is not the first footballer to become disillusioned with the mess araound him midway through a season, and he won't be the last. He made the right move at the right time. If he had stayed, the club would have only dragged him down with it. (Remember all those "Watch us go now we've got rid of Austin" posts? How accurate they were, eh?) And now we have Austin getting blamed for us being relegated.
.
Charlie, you gave me some of the finest moments I have ever had supporting the Town - the ones that come to mind immediately are Southampton away and the stuffings of Leeds. I for one am not going to be churlish enough to let those memories be spoiled by the disappointment of your departure for better things - and I believe there was absolutely nothing wrong with the manner of that departure. Keep up the good work Charlie. You are what football fans pay good money to see.
.
If anyone can find us a striker of Austin's ability who may or may not be a c0cky womaniser, hands up how many Town fans would turn him away...

To be honest, unless he had made a complete life style change I don't think he would have survived 5 minutes under Paolo. Yes a perlific goal scorer, but some people have short memories if they still hold him in high esteem. he was guaranteed to get his chance to go to a higher club in the summer regardless if we were relegated or not, but he chose get out of town and asked for a transfer when he knew Blackpool and Burnley were sniffing.

After we thrashed Charlton 4-1 at their place the first game in January, I for one had high hopes we could turn it round, but we actually got worse and so did Austin between the Charlton game and the time he left I though he was a shadow of the Charlie we all knew, he looked a very unfit player, nowhere near the level of fitness he had shown earlier in his time with us. I wonder why that was? And it didn't get much better for him when he arrived at Burnley. I saw him a coulple of times on TV before he dislocated his shoulder and I don't think Burnley fans were too impressed. However it looks like Eddie Howe has got him back on track and he is now showing the potential he had when he started his career with 20 goals from 20 games for us. Phenominal stats at any level.

No, Burnley can keep him, we now score goals from all over the field with the midfield chipping in. I'm happy to have our own Andy Williams up front, he has more pace than Charlie and if he can get on the end of crosses in the box like he did on Saturday, there is no reason why he can't match Austin with a good return of goals as a fox in the box.

A great player on the pitch whatever the rumours are off of it. I won't be booing and neither will i be cheering (unless the boos wind me up)

People are talking as if he was a huge risk, do people forget we were fighting Bournemouth for his signature. Other teams were interested in Charlie and we only got him because Bournemouth went into administration. He scored a hatful for us, gave me some happy memories, left in not such a nice way but earnt the club I love over a million pounds ....

Of all of the idiots we've had at our club who've been bad for it (and we've had a few) this doesn't sound the worst

A plea to anyone considering booing. DON'T! We have an awful history of Town boo-boys firing up ex-players to inevitably score against us. I remind you that opposition fans used to give Charlie stick and it made him even more dangerous in front of goal and 9 times out of 10 they paid the price. Because of the unsavoury manner in which he manipulated his move, I am undecided whether to applaud him pre-match but better to stay silent than goad him. Once the game starts, it will be all about getting behind our players and ignoring Austin as best I can.

100% agree with your post Den. Extremely good striker who always played his heart out. I can't blame him for going - that team was going nowhere. Whatever his antics off the field he consistently produced the goods on it. I think Andy Williams has many aspects of his game that are as good as Austin's but he is less selfish/arrogant/coc
ky. Out and out goalscorers need those less likeable qualities to get to the top. Whatever your views on Austin he has come up the hard way and made himself a success, helping our club along the way. Just hope we can contain him tonight.

I remember only too well the goals CA scored for us and the way he played for us. I agree he tailed off towards the end but he was playing in a very poor team. As Paolo says he needs to be fed and I don't think that was the case at the end.
I prefer to make judgements on what I see on the pitch not what I read on forums like these and when I apply that to CA I have to say he was near the top of the strikers I have seen at the CG not the bottom. Sorry London Red I could add another twenty to your list as I have watched the Town a lot longer than you and he would still be near the top.
I will applaud him tonight if and when he comes on for what he did on the pitch for us as a Town player but that will be all.
Looking forward to tonight.

I'm personally loving this today. Burnley a small northern club, Charlie going to be booed. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

My personal favourite is would Paolo have stood for his lack of fitness at the end of his stay. Oh my lord this isn't the same manager that has been vilified by the majority for his harsh handling of players and his treatment of Caddis? Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

I'm with Den 100% and I will be cheering him tonight when he comes out. Hope to hell he doesn't score and we knock them out but cheering him I will do to say thank you for all his efforts.

Finally let's just say we didn't sell him that January. We would have still gone down, he'd have been a division 2 striker and we'd have probably got 500k for him if we were lucky. Now that would have been brillient brilliant brilliant.

Great story, glad to see another side to the 'monster' that some are portraying lol!! As others have said good strikers often are a bit arrogant. I dont care what they are like/do off the pitch if they perform on it and he did, giving 100%. If he really did half of what people say he does would he be top scorer in the championship?? I doubt it. Also would these Austin haters be upset if we got to the championship and signed him?? Again i doubt it, not that it would happen as he is prob going to the prem. Also to suggest we saved him form non league is ludicrous, plenty of clubs were sniffing around and only circumstances prevented Bournemouth from getting him before us. He is one of the best strikers i have ever seen at the CG and i've seen the likes of Quinn, Shearer, Fjortoft, Thorne, Parkin, Cox. I would rarely, if ever, boo an ex player but certainly not one as committed and talented as Austin. I've not seen him bad mouth Swindon since leaving us, he acknowledges we gave him his chance and he's gone on to better himself, fair play to him

It may be argued that the whole sad sorry saga of Austin is attributable to one decision,

the sale of Greer,

who kept the changing room in order.

Wilson didn't want his Captain sold as he kept the team in order, Fitton decided the club needed the money, Greer went and the rest fell into dis order. Some may argue that Wilson should have taken a firmer hand and for once stand tall in the dressing room and sort out the different camps that took root.
Sadly that didn't happen, and the rest we all know, to our cost. Had Fitton not sold Greer, and law and order was restored to the dressing room, then would we have Canioman now ? History would have taken a different path, and we could still be in L1 as maybe we may have been relegated !! Was the club as a whole ready for promotion then, as it is now ? many questions and we will never know.
Austin returns tonight, but will Eddie Howe risk his prized asset ? or maybe Austin may get leaned on by the likes of Macca, hmmm and how about "that" dodgy shoulder, ironic if it got popped again here of all places, LOL

Agreed!!

If anyone's to blame for our being relegated it has to be the person who sold him at such a crucial time. Then bought that useless **** Benyon as a replacement, at a tiny fraction of what we received for Charlie. Once Austin had gone so too was our chance of avoiding relegation.

Hit the nail on the head, Greer wanted to stay if memory serves me right but we wouldn't give him new contract. my dad goes to a game once in a blue moon and saw him play against Norwich. when I said we'd sold him, he was staggered and said"how can you sell the player that holds everything together for you?" we fell apart when he left and was the worst decision i can remember as a town fan.

Yep a decent post until you mention how ironic it would be if his shoulder Popped out Wiz,didn't really like the LOL that followed to be honest.
I'm sure we can compete against Burnley without hoping/wishing or even considering a young man injuring himself.

Then we get into who led who, and why do it at home when hubby could just walk in early off the golf course.

Anyway, water under the bridge but the stigma remains, shame, had he left through normal circumstances he would have had a home coming tonight worthy of a hero.

By the by, walking in to CG from the Cricket Club lane is often frought with difficulties, which is why I'll probably be in the Fire Station tonight, or maybe even up town so I can grab a decent pie on the way in. According to N.Watkins they are having to look at the food in the Legends again as nobody is buying off the new menu.

I can see why some players don't want to stay with a club if they're relegated - may taint their future prospects.

Austin going when he did, how or why doesn't matter, it did us no good. Whether AC was better than L2, more than probably.

In the same squad at the time AC was here were

Matt Ritchie
Aden Flint
Paul Caddis
Simon Ferry
Nathan Thompson
Miles Storey.

By staying here after relegation the top 4 showed some loyalty to the club, the other two, well, were still learning their trade. But the fact is, all six have improved no end with a spell in to lower league - maybe that's down to the manager, a manager we wouldn't have got if we remained in L1 that season. So who knows what would have happened to AC under Paolo - as others had said, probably would have been out on his ear anyway.

What I think I'm trying to say is that sometimes one step back aint a bad thing.

Of the six above I can see Caddis, Ritchie and Thompson, given time, will more than hold their own in the Championship. The others might find it a tad harder, but with another year under PdC who knows.

Won't be booing Austin tonight, probably won't be clapping either. If he scores a magical goal tonight then yes applaude the skill.

I still think we can turn them over. First half containment, like against B&H with the result as against Skoke. Then in for the kill 2nd half, but without the drama of E.T or penalties.

You are what football fans pay good money to see. . If anyone can find us a striker of Austin's ability who may or may not be a c0cky womaniser, hands up how many Town fans would turn him away... .
Great post Den! Despite the rumours about his off field antics I was gutted when CA left as he is still to this day the most clinial finisher I've seen in a Town shirt.

We went down when we kept Danny Wilson, nice bloke can't finish the job I'm afraid.....

Will be giving Charlie a round of applause and then screaming at the defence to get stuck in.

Funny how nearly everyone "knows" Charlie!

You don't know someone because you know someone who knows someone.. That's the sort of thing that happens in primary school. Someone told you he was a nasty person so you hate him and believe every rumour. Very mature!

I'll be cheering for the 11 men in red rather than focusing my energy on someone who left us ages ago! COYR.
You'll be surprised!!

Wiltshires a small place.

And i agree with you.......

STFC.....all the way

According to the principles of "Six degrees of separation", we are all of us on average approximately six steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world..... personally I think that's a pile of cr*p!!

What a childsh response. Why stupid??? We have rarely played each other.

Come on Charlie and the Clarets. He loves Swindon and his time with you guys and I fully expect him not to celebate any of his hat-trick.

Don't get the impression that comments like this are representative of our club - although it may be representative of some of the clowns on this forum.

Good luck mate (after tonight!)

I hope he gets boo'ed relentlesly, he was the main problem within the dressing room and split the team. His antics around the pubs and clubs didn't do him any favours either.
I'm grateful for the effort and goals in his early days here but got way to big for his boots.'
Decent player, Despicable person !!!!
Bit harsh still loyal. As far as I could see there were MANY reasons the dressing room was split - Wilsons weak management, Leeds faction etc.

Charlie left in January and there was no improvement in team spirit after he left and if anything it got worse, judging by the way we limped casually towards relegation.

Don't get me wrong, I do not claim that Charlie should be lauded as a returning hero, but I think he did enough for this club on the pitch to deserve a little respect and a decent amount of applause.

Not me Smirg - I wasn't overly impressed with the way he departed either
.
Gave the I'm going to sign to make amends comments all summer - even said the deal was agreed and then - bang signed on at Brentford
.
None of the departed from that season will get any sort of heroes return from me
.
Connell and Smith are way above all of them in that status!
.
If we fail to go up and Ritchie departs in the summer for the Championship - I will see that as a fair enough departure - certainly repaid "his debt" over the relegation and has never cried to the media or slapped in a transfer request when others have come sniffing about
.
In fact he signed a new deal to boost his value to the club should he be sold next summer!
.
Ferry is in that bracket too!

Cheers for the laugh LR - one of your funnier and tongue in cheek posts surely. In terms of providing excitement and for sheer ability CA is only second in my opinion to Sir Don and maybe Shearer I'll agree with. You cannot be serious to include the likes of Mitchell,Finney.Hay Maskell & the "norwegian blue" in your analogy. Chalky was certainly a legend - mainly for his Tom Daley skills or contriving to miss from 2 yards but his performance at Selhurst Park against the Pikeys in the playoffs is certainly a STFC moment of history.

Jock I have never questioned Austin's ability and he certainly would be near the top of the quality list (though still behind SSP and Cox for me)
.
However - if a player wants respect from the fans on his return be needed to have given it on his departure
.
Austin's actions were as far from respectful as you possibly can get and therefore, lost all respect from me
.
As said above nothing to do with the off field stuff - just the complaining to sky, the transfer request and then not one word of thanks at the time of moving
.
I'm not there tonight but if I was I would be in the no reception at all camp - he would be viewed as if Rhodes was coming to town - a danger man of an opposition team

He took his flak, got his goal and stood in front of the DR and applauded those who gave him so much at the end, shirt off and shoulder strapped.

You all seem to be forgetting the legendary, the "great" or was it "grate" Bill Atkins.
For those of you who've had a sense-of-humour bypass - that IS tongue-in-cheek.

No-one though mentioned Ernie Hunt or Mike Summerbee, both local lads who made good.

Maybe it's only the likes of me (& Wizard) who remember the great teams of the sixties.

Villa in the next round - not too bad.

I have lot of affection for Villa.
In my early teens I'd spend most of my summer hols in Birmingham and went to Villa Park on quite a few occasions for pre-season friendlies. Peter McParland was my hero, way back then.
Most of my Dad's side of the family are from Brum, but some are Baggies, some are Blues and some are Villa.

I had 36 cousins in those days (now have only 25)
