SWINDON TOWN: Austin hopes to repay Town debt - by scoring a hat-trick
6:00am Tuesday 25th September 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Former Town striker Charlie Austin
CHARLIE Austin returns to the club to which he owes a debt of gratitude this evening, but the striker plans to abandon sentimentality as he looks to fire his current side into round four of the Capital One Cup.
Swindon Town plucked Austin from the relative obscurity of Wessex League outfit Poole Town in September 2009, and in 16 fairytale months the Hungerford hitman made the now-famous transition from bricklayer to goalgetter as the Robins stormed to the League One play-off final.
In all, the 23-year-old managed 37 goals in 65 appearances before Burnley’s £1.2million approach in January 2011.
Despite only being a part of the County Ground setup for just over a season, Austin quickly established hero status amongst the fans for a series of tireless performances and utterly clinical finishes.
While some begrudged his switch to Turf Moor, it was the natural progression of a talented centre forward who seems destined for the top tier in the not-so-distant future.
Unsurprisingly, Austin fondly remembers his time with Swindon - where only a dastardly divot denied him a famous goal at Wembley in his first season as a pro - but when he arrives in SN1 tonight his focus will be entirely on helping the Clarets into the last 16 of the competition.
"It was hard to leave at the time but it ended up being the right decision,” he said.
"Unfortunately I then ended up getting injured and doing my shoulder, and I was out for the rest of the season.
"If I did that at Swindon and things went the way they did and Swindon got relegated, I would have been a League Two player and not a Championship player. In my first season as a Championship player I scored 16 league goals.
"You can say I owe Swindon, and obviously I’m grateful to them.
"But I took my chance and I got sold from there and moved to Burnley Football Club. Now I’m a Burnley player and I’ve got a job to do.
"It will be special, but I’d like to score two or three against them and put Burnley into the next round.
"Every time I go on to the pitch at the moment I feel confident enough to put the ball in the net and score, so this will be no different.”
Austin has backed Town, a completely different entity under Paolo Di Canio to that which he left 18 months ago, to secure back-to-back promotions and a place in the Championship this season.
However, he is convinced that he and his Burnley teammates have enough quality to stop expert giant-killers Swindon from knocking another higher-level team out of the competition.
"It will be a tough game, there’s been a big change-around there,” he said. "They’re a massive club and they’ll be up there again in League One.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if next year they are a Championship club. That’s what they are aiming for.
"There are only three players left from when I was there, so to be honest I’ll be going there and it will be more the background staff if anything.
"But I’ve got to go there regardless of if I’m playing against friends and do a job for Burnley.
"I’d like to think I’d get a good reception, it would be nice. But regardless of what reception I get, as a professional you try to block that out and do your stuff on the pitch.”
Having already scored nine times this season Austin is targeting double figures in double quick time with a goal tonight.
The frontman has only failed to find the net in two of his eight appearances so far this term, and Swindon will have to be on top of their game to keep him frustrated.
"When I was at Swindon I got injured then I got on a run after I was out for five weeks,” he said. "So I think this would be the quickest if I was lucky enough to get there.
"I’ve got to thank the lads for their service to me and their all-round game. It’s not just me.”

Im trying very hard not be to abusive. but when he says it was hard to leave swindon i nearly choked on my toast. whilst its true that he gave 100% wearing the town shirt you just can not get away from the fact on the circumstances behind leaving. He was told in no uncertain terms that he was not going anywhere by fitton to only put in a transfer request the following day, without doubt he was one of the main reasons why we went down you can blame Wilson all you like but to find a replacement for Bighead in jan was impossible. I am really struggling not to wish him ill fortune so ill just leave it at that.....
This guy is a horrible man.
Maybe he score goals, but it seems as he'll take and do whatever it takes...
Morals......courage.
.........selfless committment???
No.....just Charlie Austin......
Get stuffed, you horrible little man......we're gonna be a Premiership Club in 5 years....and you'll be League 1 at best......Hopefully!

However, I'm largely indifferent to him now rather than sentimental. Hard to leave? He wanted out as soon as he knew "bigger" clubs were sniffing round. Fair enough, but at least be honest. If you want to go fir your career, cause you know you'll be on double your previous wages, no-one would hold that against you. But to come out afterwards and talk about how hard it was to leave when he clearly couldn't wait to run off to the highest bidder is totally insincere.
The off field antics may be true and if so, totally contemptable, but no-one knows for sure so won't comment on that.

Talking of which, he must be due another step up to a bigger team in January. So I hope he doesn't score tonight but bangs in plenty up to his January transfer request. We'll take the sell on money !

People criticising him for leaving aren't remotely justified - if you were in your early 20s in your job and a bigger, better company came in and offered to double your wages and drastically speed up your chance to get to the top of your profession you'd be an utter fool to say no.
I thoroughly hope he gets a great reception tonight and the boo boys on here either stay away or keep quiet.
Let's concentrate on cheering on our boys, I see no reason why we can't win tonight!

All I will say is CA came from nowhere scored mega goals for the Town and moved on like many before him.Yes he was young then and maybe the money glamoue etc went to his head.
He has consolidated at Burnley and I for one wish him well for the future.
Tonight will be different I think our defence will need to be at there best.
Simple if we can go to Stoke win 4-3 and as those old enough remember 69
So good luck to the Town Go for the Win

I for one will not be applauding him and I hope he scores an early goal in front of the town end and he celebrates by kissing the burnley badge so the fans can then see what he really is like, he found it hard to move from here.... He orchestrated his move away from here! Quality striker but a complete **** as a person. I really hope town win tonight just to **** Austin off.

I think we also need to remember that Austin isn't just a striker. His workrate in supporting the midfield for us was phenomenal. He can create goals for himself and others as well putting the ball in the net. If we're going to get a win, we might need him and a few others to have an off night.

I remember the day of his debut at Carrow Road with the Town fans chanting his name from half time. Waffler brought him on with 18 minutes to go. My mates who were Canaries couldn't understand what all the fuss was about because we'd created the sum total of flip all and were going crazy.
Hope to god he doesn't score tonight and would quite like him to be sent off as it will provide a pantomime villain for the night and most importantly hopefully a Town win.

I 100% agree with Batch about the right and wrong way to leave a club. All you need to ask yourself is why is Cox held in the highest esteem by ALL town fans, yet Austin has a lot of critics? Both were top goalscorers, who both put plenty of effort in who both were sold to bigger clubs for a hefty fee and big payrise.
In my opinion, the answer is their attitude to the transfer.

Charlie Austin was one of the best strikers we've had at Swindon in years, was totally committed on the pitch even when no-one else seemed to be trying, and became a cult hero overnight.
The lack of sincerity, and naivety in thinking fans will fall for his 'hard to leave' words, provides a stick for those who want to beat him with. But he's not the only footballer who is thick.
Ward had him in his pocket for nearly all the match at Wembley, and we'll have to hope the same will happen again tonight.

Seriously though, I know Austin's Town history now - and I'm very pleased with what we have in the striking department - but I doubt whether I'll be fortunate enough to see another striker as good as him playing for the Town. Then again, I thought I wouldn't see anyone better than Cox, and along comes Austin, who was bigger, stronger, sharper and much better in the air. So I suppose you never know.

And he's now doing the same great job for one of England's fine old traditional provincial football clubs. I welcome them both to the County Ground with open arms. As long as we beat them he can score as many goals as he likes. Really looking forward to the game tonight.

Also had he stayed we probably wouldnt have got relegated and would not have Paolo. Looking back I'm pleased he left as we would not be in the position we are now having one of the most exciting periods in the clubs history.
Sure it was badly stage managed but I think the blame for that should be with the management/chairman/
agents at the time and not the player.

If it wasn't for town he could be still be in non-league football. He owes everything to town but when things got tough for us under wilson he gladly jumped ship and moved on even when our chairman did everyhing to keep him.

Fitton was in a no-win position - either force him to stay, which would result in resentment from the player, more than likely a drop in performance quality and paying him to sit in the stands, or cash in whilst we could and get the best deal available. We took the latter option and it was the right decision. If a player makes it quite clear he wants to leave the club, would you rather cut your nose off to spite your face by keeping him? Silly comment I have to say.

Under Paolo thats not allowed they have strict guidelines, I think the fact that all of the players involved took advantage of a situation where PDC had to go home for a bereavement and went out, thats why people were dissapointed...

Under Paolo thats not allowed they have strict guidelines, I think the fact that all of the players involved took advantage of a situation where PDC had to go home for a bereavement and went out, thats why people were dissapointed...
As far as CA goes, I will give him a clap before the game boo him all the way through and clap him at the end.

As you say he wanted a longer contract and fitton would only give him 1 year. With a 3 year contract on the table from Brighton, in your late 20's I can fully understand why he decided to go. Charlie on the other hand was a completely different situation. If he had carried on playing as he was the offers would have come. Instead he chose to force the issue and handed in a transfer request with the club that plucked him from non league football. Very bad form and with Greer getting a reasonable amount of grief I expect more for Charlie.

Too compare him with cox or Parkin is laughable. I hope the town end give him as much stick as they do with Greer, the only difference is Greer didn't want to go he wanted a longer contract which fitton wouldn't give whereas old big head wanted to go full stop. Everybody of course are entitled to an option but for me the town end should be singing there's only one greedy ............ Anything else in my option would be a disgrace.

There are players from that team who are more deserving of stick, such as Douglas, Cuthbert, Sheehan and a number of others.
To be honest, I am not one for abusing ex-players as I always associated that sort of things with the ill informed fans at Ashton Gate and always felt we were a bit better than that.
Charlie will get a good reception from me as I thought he was outstanding for us and deserved to go on to bigger and better things.

I think you are training your sights on the wrong target. Billy Paynter did a deal with Leeds before the end of that season, and we then proceeded to collapse. And Paynter suddenly suffered a series of "hamstring injuries", which kept him out of the side. Coincidence? Maybe, but I doubt it. Now, if I have misjudged Paynter and he did not do that deal with Grayson, then all I can say is that my informant has great clairvoyancy powers because he told me about it several weeks before the season finished.
.
What about giving Austin some credit for NOT jumping ship with Greer and Paynter at the end of 09/10? At least he gave it a go with the rotting shambles that was all around him.

But, the chap is flawed; his saving grace is scoring goals...
You know as well as i do; everyone remembers a great goal scorer
does everyone remember a great defensive midfielder....no not everyone........

He may of banged in 30 odd goals for us but when he was here it was all bout 'super charlie austin'. If austin wasn't playing then all hope of winning that certain game was over!
At our club now no player is bigger than the next, everyones on the same level and anyone who does think they are bigger or better than the club i.e. Charlie Austin, Leon Clarke then they are pretty much out the door.
Like I already said I hate charlie's guts. I hope he gets sent off in the 1st minute so I don't have to watch the selfish, arrogant little pr*ck running around on our pitch
