TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Broughton end long wait for a point

BROUGHTON Gifford ended a 13-match losing streak which stretched back to last October by taking a point from their Division Two encounter with Worton & Cheverell.

But they will be kicking themselves as maximum points were theirs for the taking as they led 2-1 and 3-2 before conceding a late goal that handed Worton a share of the spoils from a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Myles Hickton saw his opener for Worton cancelled out by Ryan Greenland’s effort, Broughton then had the chance to take the lead but they failed to edge ahead when Greenland missed from the penalty spot.

Gary Turk saved his teammates' blushes when he put the home team 2-1 in front before the interval.

Worton restored parity early in the second half through Devlin Keane only for James Glanville to set Broughton up for an unlikely win, but it wasn’t to be as a second from Keane tied things up at three apiece.

Neither team could conjure up a winner as Worton finished the game with 10 players after they had Scott Stroud sent off for a challenge on Ryan Greenland which led to the game being held up for half an hour.

Bratton 7 Calne Eagles 1

CALNE Eagles lost for a seventh consecutive game against their long-time bogey team, Bratton, who cruised to comfortable 7-1 victory against their previously-unbeaten visitors.

Bratton had the better of the first half, but Calne remained competitive and it took a bit of individual skill from Dan Cox after 17 minutes to open the scoring.

Chris Storey then doubled that lead 10 minutes later when he latched onto a long ball up field and got the better of centre back Roy Wenham before finishing with a cool shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

Right at the start of the second half Bratton scored again through a sweet Shane Newman strike to make it 3-0.

On 55 minutes Calne pulled a goal back through a Tim Beecham own goal, following good work from Karl Sharratt.

This gave the away team a lift and they momentarily enjoyed some good possession and were unlucky not to score again following a goalmouth scramble from a corner kick.

However, from that very situation Bratton counter attacked and instantly restored their three-goal advantage through a deflected Ben Mead shot.

Thereafter, Bratton took complete total control of the game. Calne’s one dimensional kick-and-chase attacking play was now being dealt with effortlessly by the Bratton defenders, and at the other end the home team started to carve out chances at will.

In the last 20 minutes Matt Morgan scored from a corner kick and Dan Cox also scored two further goals to complete his hat-trick and complete the 7-1 scoreline.

Heytesbury 2 Steeple Ashton 3

AN INJURY-TIME winner from Guy Rowley helped Steeple Ashton claim a 3-2 victory at Heytesbury after the villagers had threatened an upset after coming from two down to tie the game with just second left only to be denied a point by Rowley’s late strike.

Rowley scored Ashton’s opener on 31 minutes and Neil Taylor’s side had the chance to double their lead in the 36th minute but Damian Hately had his penalty save by keeper Declan Griffiths. 

Ashton grabbed their second on the hour mark, with top scorer Rowley netting his second of the afternoon to make it 2-0.

Heytesbury dug deep and on 88 minutes they halved the deficit when Leigh Kennedy scored from the penalty and a minute later the scores were tied thanks to a second Kennedy effort when he unleashed a stunning strike to make it 2-2.

With the game into injury time Rowley surged forward and broke into the Heytesbury area where he planted the ball into the hosts net for a third time to earned the visitors an incredible 3-2 win.  

The Lamb 2 Westbury Town 1

LAMB FC and Westbury Town were neck and neck for most of last season as they battled it out for the third division title, which was eventually won by Richard Stevens' Lamb.

The corresponding fixture at the Stallards last term produced a seven-goal thriller which Lamb won 4-3 and the first meeting of the sides this season may not have produced as many goals but it was just as exciting with Lamb claiming a controversial 2-1 win.

Craig Sheppard gave Lamb a half-time lead and he doubled his team advantage with a second which was shrouded in controversy as Westbury thought it hadn’t cross the line but was given by the referee and this came after Westbury thought they had netted when Ian Gray and Mark Young combined to bundled the ball over the line but they effort was adjudged not to have cross the line. 

Luke Smith pulled a goal back for Westbury late on but it was just a consolation in a game that Westbury believed they should have taken a point from the game after a couple of refereeing decisions went against them.

Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves 6 Melksham Town A 1

AFTER just avoiding relegation from the division last season, Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves, under the leadership of Matt Rusling, have made a brilliant start to the new campaign with three wins from four games and their latest success a 6-1 home win over Melksham Town Reserves sees them move into second place in the standings.

Wanderers made an amazing start and were one up after just 30 seconds when Jack Parker saw his shot saved but Will Bayley was on hand to put the ball in.

From the restart Wanderers won the ball back and went on the attack and another Park shot cannoned off the post and into Joe Clayton’s whose own goal put Wanderers 2-0 inside the first minute.

Melksham pulled a goal back on three minutes when Bradley Butcher’s shot deflected in off Mike Cooksey.

Wanderers regained the two goal lead in the eighth minutes, Mike Ritson setting up Bayley to score his second of the afternoon.

The same combination put Wanderers 4-1 ahead and saw Bayley complete his hat-trick.

Bayley capped a brilliant first-half performance when he volleyed home from 25 yards after an assist from Ben Rogers.

Mike Cooksey had the final say for Wanderers in the second when he scored number six, his well struck 25 yard effort completing their half dozen.

Wanderers keeper Dave Cardus played his part in his team's victory saving a Ben Howe penalty and producing a number of other notable saves at vital times to keep his team well ahead.
