RUGBY: Devizes 11 Corsham 15
6:30pm Tuesday 18th September 2012 in Sport
CORSHAM capitalised on Devizes’ wayward kicking as they clinched a narrow victory in the Southern Counties South derby.
The visitors struck early with a try after two minutes, full-back Pete Hynes going over after number eight Ben Russell had broken through the the defence to score out wide.
For the remainder of the first half, Devizes pressurised Corsham into giving away a substantial number of penalties, but the usually- reliable Andy Thompson had a challenging time from the kicking tee, successfully converting just one of his five chances all afternoon to reduce the deficit.
The home pack continued on the offensive into the second half before finally, after a spell of pressure in the Corsham 22, openside flanker Julian Taylor bundled over to push the Saddlebacks in front.
Corsham’s Karl Brant was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle, but Devizes were unable to take advantage and visiting fly-half Andy Williamson levelled matters with a drop goal.
However, Thompson responded with a drop goal of his own to restore the home side’s lead and set up a tight finish.
But Corsham delivered the hammer blow with a well-taken try by Hynes to hand the visitors victory.
