JASON Blackmore booted a penalty with two minutes to go to ensure Sutton Benger got their season off to a winning start in Dorset & Wilts Two North.
Blackmore struck as Benger finished strongly in the hot conditions, despite being reduced to 14 men by a sin-binning.
It was 3-3 after 20 minutes as eached side traded penalties, before a breakaway try from the visitors and conversion gave them a 10-3 lead.
Benger hit back with a try of their own when number eight Matt Rea powered over in the corner from a lineout.
The conversion missed leaving the home side still trailing by two points but, after some good hands and mini breaks from backs and forwards alike, centre Blackmore found some space and sprinted through to dot down under the posts.
A mix-up with the kicking tee led to the snap drop-goal conversion being missed but Benger remained in front going into the final 20 minutes.
Fairford broke away from the back of a scrum for a clear run for the line to go into the lead b y two points.
Both sides kicked further penalties to leave Fairford in front going into the final stages, when Blackmore’s boot delivered victory for the home side.
