CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Rudge looking to stamp out complacency

Chippenham Town chief Nathan Rudge admits that he wasn’t completely satisfied with his side’s performance in their FA Cup victory over Mangotsfield United yesterday.

The Bluebirds booked their place in the second qualifying round and were cruising with a 3-0 lead midway through the second half but their Evo-Stik League Southern Divison One South and West opponents pulled a goal back and caused a few nervy moments for the hosts in the closing stages.

Despite Chippenham’s progress in the cup, Rudge is still hoping that his team can cut out any signs of complacency in the future and said: “We’re not 100 per cent satisfied with what we did because that game should have been put to bed a lot earlier.

“We were 3-0 up and I thought we could have scored four, five or six and if we were playing well, which I expect us to have been, it should have been by that many.

“I’ve signed players who know how to win games of football and when you’re 3-0 up, you expect those players to come to the fore.

“Unfortunately, they listened to what we wanted them to do to get themselves 3-0 up and once they did, they thought that they were better than what they are and they started doing what they wanted to do.

“It may sound like I’m moaning but we’re just looking to be perfect all the time and I thought we could do better.”

Ashley Williams, who was playing in an unfamiliar role in the centre of defence, was sent off late in the Mangotsfield clash and Rudge was sympathetic towards his player after his early bath.

The Chippenham boss added: “I’ve been playing centre-half all my life and I said to Ash that when you’re playing right-back, you’d probably get away with that.

“In the end, if you raise your hands, you deserve to be sent off and at centre-back, you’re not going to get away with it.”

Rudge also confirmed that the Bluebirds have made a seven-day approach for young Yate Town defender Tyrone Mings, the son of former manager Adie.
