SWINDON TOWN: Time-out for Paolo

Town boss Paolo Di Canio Town boss Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio is looking forward to a full week working with the Swindon Town squad for the first time this season following this afternoon’s clash with Leyton Orient, describing the break from competitive action as “oxygen” for his side.

Games have come thick and fast for the Robins so far this term, both in League One and in two knockout competitions, meaning Di Canio has been preparing his side for a match every three or four days since the campaign began against Brighton on August 14.

However, after the visit of the O’s, Town have seven days without a fixture prior to the long trip to Carlisle next weekend – and Di Canio plans to use the extra training time to reinforce his footballing ideology to both his new signings and those who have been part of the County Ground set-up for a little longer.

“It’s crucial for me,” he told the Advertiser. “For the players I have had under me for 15 or 16 months you can see that someone every three or four games forgets the principle - not only the body language and desire but the principle.

“If you don’t repeat every week and use Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the tactical moments, even at the top level, you forget this.

“Repeating the training sessions helps you.

“I have five days, and it’s crucial in this situation because I have five new players and they have to come in.

“The process can become more quick to know each other. Practise and practise is crucial for me.

“We know we have a period when we will play Tuesday-Saturday, Tuesday-Saturday but this week is for me like oxygen.

“On Saturday we try to win then we have another week to recover and work not for one or two days - for four days in a row.

“It will be full immersion - the players have to understand not to feel bored because it is a part of our job. “The new players have to mix together as quickly as they can and understand how we want to play.”

Meanwhile, Swindon Town’s iconic Stratton Bank is set to be renamed the Excalibur Stand this afternoon.

The Swindon-based communications firm currently sponsor Town boss Paolo Di Canio, but have extended their deal to include naming rights to the Stratton Bank, and the new name will be unveiled during a ceremony before this afternoon’s game with Leyton Orient.

James Phipps, CEO of Excalibur said: “We are really pleased to continue with the sponsorship of the club.

“As genuine supporters of the team and running a successful business in the town, it’s great to be able to support the club in these ways.

“I’m really excited we have had the opportunity to extend our sponsorship and name the Stratton Bank the Excalibur Stand.”

Regards the renaming of the Stratton Bank, doesn't the use of the word 'Stand' imply a roof of some sort?? Surely it should be renamed 'The Excalibur Bank' or the 'Excalibur End'? Or am I missing something here??

Surly the Stratton bank is a terrace, so it should be called the Excalibar terrace. Hiram i do agree with you though , i always thought of a stand was a covered seating or standing area.

Should be renamed the Madame tussauds stand, as nothing moves in there.
Onwards and upwards

Being knocked out of of JPT is probably a blessing in disguise. Too many games in such a short space of time takes it toll. Concentrating on the league is the most important thing.

Now, when I look at Stratton Bank, this will be going through my head:

ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake… … her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!

DENNIS: Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government….
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well, but you can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ‘cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went ‘round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up, will you. Shut up!

Priceless!

A terrace with seats on though, calling it that may confuse the issue. Rarely used anyway, and needs developing before we worry too much about what we call it.

Yes, it's not a stand, is it.

Not a fan of naming stands & grounds after the highest bidder, so it'll always be The Stratton Bank as far as I am concerned.

Ward will start today in place of Flint who drops to the bench, (according to the Sun), Paolo says he thought he was on holiday against the Pox. Unfair IMO to blame him alone for the mistake that led to the Pox goal. Ward gets his chance to show us his worth today, wish him well

exactly my thought. Unless they name stands after worthy swindon town legends i.e. Don Rogers stand then I dont like the names being changed. Always will be Stratton Bank to me

It's advertising revenue and every club needs that. Escalibur have sponsored Town for a while now without publicity so this is one way to get some back.
Bet you didn't know that the Town end is officially called "The Fastplant Town end " because the plant hire company sponsor it .
My cousin works for Excalibur and I'm hoping she'll get me some freebie tickets fot the soft seats :-)

Hoping for a much needed win today to settle things down. Perhaps starting with only limited new faces and bringing them in as subs over a number of games would allow the side to bed-in a bit smoother. No point in rushing things like Wednesday night.
I didn't see this as an easier game before last Sundays match, and now with a lot more water under the bridge, perhaps now is the time for a cool reflective team selection and firm performance. Game on, Town win.

This week might be like oxygen to Paolo but it will be more like a slow suffocation to me. I hate it when there's a week between matches. Still ... If it helps us get something from Carlisle ...

I have to agree, Ward was as much to blam. Looked like a mis-understanding due to not knowing how each other play. Paulo really shouldnt criticise his player in public like he does, he'll undermine confidence if he's not careful.

Wouldn't it be great to get some of the big companies around swindon to get involved with the redevelopment of the ground. We could have the BMW MINI stand for the town end . Honda and Nationwide stands at the side , and Zurich on the stratton bank.
Just a thought , but can never see it happening.
I think we'll end up with either the Bet fair ,four four two ,or samsung stadium. Anything will be an improvement to what we've got now
