Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio has set his Swindon Town side the target of occupying a top-eight position by the beginning of October, by which time he expects his squad to be firing on all cylinders.
With five new faces arriving in the final 48 hours of the summer transfer window, and with several key players currently recovering from injuries, Di Canio does not yet have all his options available as he looks to mastermind a second successive promotion.
However, he feels that by the start of next month he will have all his resources at his disposal, and the Town boss wants the Robins to keep themselves within touching distance of the promotion picture until then.
“It will take another month because the players we’ve got in here in the friendly games didn’t make me enjoy Bayern Munich, Crystal Palace and Supermarine,” he said.
“They were under me 45 days - full immersion morning, afternoon - now we have four players who joined us five days ago and we have half-an-hour tactical.
“It’s my job but maybe it takes longer to release the different ideas in football that maybe they had until a few days ago. So the people have to be patient.
“When (Matt) Ritchie is back, Gary Roberts back, all the players back and the new players in 20 days’ time at the end of September, beginning of October - like last year - we will start to see the real potential.
“If we win Saturday we are maybe top three. We have to think like last year in this moment. We have to stay in the top eight in October and November.
“I don’t want to say play-offs, top eight like last year - same thinking, same idea. Seven points from the top top two, maybe two points inside the play-offs or two points from the play-offs and be there with 35 games to go would be good.
“Last year we anticipated this and this time I am sure we can do the same. But I want to have back Ritchie, Gary Roberts and all the five who after one month will understand what I want, and then we are going to have another season as protagonists - listen to me.”

That would mean that the end of the year it would be P46 W26 D13 L7 PTS 91
.
91 points is normally enough for the title if not at least promotion
.
Now I know it is unlikely we will en with that exact record - just pointing out our start has been pretty good so far - especially as we have beaten a main rival!!!!

Let's keep things in perspective!!!!

Think this article is quite good and outlines a plan of how he thinks we will progress. law of averages say, not all the new signing will be a hit, but if 9 from 12 make the grade, 75% is not a bad ratio. By the end of September we should have a clearer picture which ones have a future with STFC.

I understand that it is not a priority over the league but we can't sit back and say "Good job that's over!"...Not good at all to be out already in my book.
Let's put things into perspective! We lost in the tin pot trophy to a team who were playing their cup final! They are a pub team who played hoof ball and again got lucky on the night. Guess our problem Tuesday was that they were all totally new to STFC and, although I hate to say it, Poxford are winning a few this season and as for hoof ball, there will be plenty of that in league 1 this season...even Stoke resorted to it....we HAVE to deal with it.
..
Getting the front two of Williams and Collins back together is important as you can see these two becoming the next Mayes and Rowlands partnership.
--
You have to believe we have too much for them tomorrow BUT!..
..
Remember Hereford last season!?..they couldn't fill their bench and they had their 45yr old coach playing in goal as they had no first teasers...then the 0-0 followed....we can't assume anything.
--
We've got a great run of home fixtures in one sense as they're all in poor form but it's critical we start to pick up points in the away games as losing becomes a habit if you're not too careful. I'm sure we'll be ok on the road but 4 points from the next 3 away games minimum please!
--
At home: Win 18 Draw 4 Lose 1 = 58pts
- 90pts to finish top 2?..31pts required from the remaining 21 games...win every other game.

Take away the defeat to the yellow scum in the jpt and we have only lost a game against preston we was lost in the first 10 minutes.
Every team has an off day like the one against preston and even though we did get heavily beat there in the end we all know that wasn't the swindon town team we know. Maybe it was down to a hangover from the Stoke game or maybe due to the fact that we gifted them 2 goals in 10 minutes which practically ended the game as a contest. I dont know...all I do know is that I have my full trust and faith in Paolo and his team to gain promotion this year!
Remember last season after 4 straight defeats in the league? Everything seemed doomed and how did it end up?..oh yes we only went and won the league!!..a win tomorrow against the O's and we can all breath again!!

I've also done some calculations and as Predictions League Champione 2011-2012 this counts -
Based on league stats to date we will win every home league game without conceding a goal. Great!
BUT....
We will also not win an away league game all season. Oh no!

Oxford were a really poor side just playing a hoof up the pitch but we will learn from losing to garbage like that and i'd rather have 3 points tomorrow than another JPT game.
Oxford will explode this season as they always do and i'm sure we will be celebrating again come May whereas the Yellow scum will be sick that their team will have failed to do anything again.

I don't think anybody has asked for PDC's head. They may have asked him to wind it in a bit, and they may have stated poor man management skills, but I can't actually pinpoint somebody asking him directly to leave.
Clearly some of his behaviour is questionable, even Pox fans local to me are saying he was out of order naming a player in the manner he belittled Flint.
Yes he has his methods, and yes they may be different, we all know that, but it doesn't always make those methods and ways right, even if results tend to give that impression. We clearly had a very good team last season, and the indication is another for this, but nothing is cut and dried, as we still have to play another 43 games to stake our claim for promotion.
We all know and most accept one day he will leave, and hopefully he will leave us as a better club, and him a better manager, but as with all learning their trade, you have to listen to those around you when you get it wrong, so next time you get it right, and he needs to learn that, or he will continue as he is, a manager of a lower league club.
Wednesday he said one thing and did another, No Charity, and then gave it, no denying it, his choice nobody else involved, he got it wrong, and the Pox yet again, one good chance and one goal, they won, we lost, so why blame Flint ? easy prey who isn't going to answer back.

I also take it all those criticising PdC over his Flint "witch hunt" have actually listened to the interview then? (Or not!)
.
As if you had you/they would realise that it was not actually a witch hunt at all and in fact he praises Flint a lot in it say what a good professional he is
.
He is basically saying he is young and needs to improve if he is going to be a top player - which is true!
.
He then explains why he thinks Flint was at fault too - he says he should have dropped in behind but instead caused the collision - hardly scaving criticism!
.
He also mentions about the "you must clean your dirty clothes in the dressing room" complaints but he says he doesn't agree
.
He obviously thinks it will improve the players - RDV is certainly a better player and has had it before!
.
I don't care what Pox fans or anyone else thinks - I am loving being a town fan right now
.
We play great football, have a fantastic record, signing players we could only dream of recently and are clearly on the up
.
The reason the Pox etc try and poke fun is jealousy - simple as that!

As goes the criticism/diagnosis, yes I listened to the interview several times, and he plays Flint up as well as putting him down. No mention of Macca who was far from good all game, why not?
Don't forget PDC's record as a player, committed yes, professional always ? No. Did he not sit down on the pitch and demand to be subbed because of a turned down penalty claim, absent from away games, a few fall-outs with team mates, far from the perfection he demands from his players yet hardly the soul of discretion then or now, seems that he also has a limit, the next tantrum is possibly on the simmer right now awaiting its chance to flourish into full bloom tomorrow. As goes poking fun, the Pox are not alone, not by a very long way. Seems he is an easy target just now for anyone, shame because I thought he was better than that. He made a rod for his own back earlier this week, with his Charity item, and as you proclaimed last week the media love him for his out bursts so the Beeb gave him his own column.
Flawed genius ? quite probably, as perfect as he proclaims ?, no far from it.
Does he have what it takes this season, I hope so, but time will reveal that answer. Do I want him to leave ?, categorically NO, but, he will decide when he has had enough, and at that point, he will be gone, because that is his temperament and ego.

W4 D1 L2 is a good start to the season, especially with the wins over Brighton and Stoke.
The slightly eccentric tough love approach is not new, Brian Clough a great example.
It's just the opposite to the wishy washy approach of others, and that approach can work as well.
Let's not forget that he praises players as well, Eg Wes has been praised countless times on radio and b@locked just the once.
What Paolo is is a character, and like it or not he is achieving on the whole very good results and has put some interest and upward momentum into the club, and we are in a far better state for it.
One thing I've noticed is he has the ability to see the big picture and look long term. Eg Wembley he played Bostock and McEvely at the expense of Cibocchi and J Smith. look who is now in the team.
On Wed he threw the new players in at the deep end, in a hostile atmosphere, to see what they were made of. He and they will have learnt a lot from that, and whilst we are sore at the moment, promotion will sooth the pain and then some.

Managed 60 Won 40 Drew 9 Lost 16 - win ratio of 62%
.
Lets look at his full record as it is very very impressive!
.
I personally find the best way is to not buy into the sensationalist headlines, PdC OTT rants etc and just focus on the underlying messages which are there
.
If you just focus on that bit (which is actually the important bit) and you see what PdC is trying to do - it would also remove the hoo-hah around it
.
I'm sure the players do that as Wes most know PdC doesn't think he is the worst professional ever - think everyone connected to the club know that - it is just PdC way - exaggerate to make a point - just like the Barcelona comment against Stoke!

Lazaat wrote:Got to be honest, this kind of comment really annoys me. It's not a 'tin pot' cup, it's our only realistic chance of silverware. I for one really enjoyed the trip to Wembley last season.
Let's put things into perspective! We lost in the tin pot trophy to a team who were playing their cup final! They are a pub team who played hoof ball and again got lucky on the night. We have made a much better start this season than last and a win tomorrow will put us right up there, and with Ritchie and Roberts to come back into the side things are l
There's is also the fact that losing to Oxford again was horrible. The competition is irrelevant.

And it's not a competition for who's a true fan - I spend thousands every season support Town (including trips to Exeter, Southend and Barnet in the JPT last season). I don't subscribe to the theory that cup games are a distraction, either. This is a very new phenomenon in football and one of the many reasons I like Paolo's style of management is that he takes every compeitition seriously.

JPT always splits the true fans but sadly far more weight is added by the hangers on...like you it hurt twice on Wednesday...a day out at Wembley - regardless of expense - is a memory to be treasured...I mean come on!!..we have been twice to the new Wembley and 3 times to the Old (with differing results) and ALL of them will stay with me for life....imagine being a Bradford or Brentford or even a W.B.A. fan compared to us!?
..
Despite all out trials and tribulations we ARE STFC!!!...and we can all be REALLY proud of our history and recent history.....I know we can be proud of our future!

There is a sense of humour in there as well and a Mourinho like attention to detail.
Clearly the Capitol One cup is the cup he was interested in going for this year, you can see from the difference in touchline passion.
40 wins out of 60, if he maintains that throughout his managerial career what a career that will be.
He does what he likes is a good description, and he likes to win.
