SWINDON TOWN: No more charity cases

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio will send his Swindon players out on a revenge mission this evening as he bids to take back the ‘charity’ his side gifted to rivals Oxford last season.

Town lost both their meetings with their near-neighbours in 2011/12 as they went down 2-1 at the County Ground before suffering a 2-0 defeat at the Kassam Stadium in March, but still went on to win the League Two title while Oxford finished ninth.

The two defeats hurt Di Canio, and the Italian is intent on claiming the local bragging rights this evening in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy like he believes his side should have done last season.

“Win, lose or draw – anything can happen –but in terms of professional commitment I really am sure they are going to make a very good performance,” he said. “I told my players that for me and for everybody, even though the six points Oxford got from us last year was enough for them to reach nothing, I don’t like to give this kind of charity.

“It’s time we play for what we deserve because we have to be honest – if we put together the 180 minutes the game should finish 12-5. At the end we lost 2-1 and 2-0, incredible, but it was the result.

“Fair enough, we have to have more determination, take our chances, be strong and focused for 95 minutes.

“Of course I expect a good performance because I can’t imagine they won’t give me 100 per cent for many reasons – it is the cup, local rivals, fantastic atmosphere from our fans obviously not from Oxford fans. I don’t see why we can’t perform with desire and commitment.

“Normally when we come from a very, very bad performance without the commitment, desire and passion, then we recover and there are all the situations for us to give our best.”

Di Canio is keen for the club to enjoy another special run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after reaching the final last year, but the Italian is not getting carried away at the thought of another trip to Wembley just yet.

“We have to give something to our fans and it is time for us in the cup to do something special. We did it with Brighton, with Stoke, now for many reasons against Oxford in the JPT,” he said. “But there are other reasons. It is the only competition we can reasonably reach Wembley – I’m talking about cups because obviously you can go to the play-offs as well.

“So it’s the only real cup we can win, so I want good performances because I want to go to Wembley. Let me go to Wembley and then maybe I can tell you I want to win. We go through the second round and the third round and once we reach a Wembley final I can tell you ‘now, we’re going to win a trophy’.”

This interview on "player" sounds quite different, when you insert the questions. Last papargraph in particular sounds quite arrogant on here, but certainly did not in the interview. interesting...

Interesting comment, having listened to J Wrayvon 5 live Monday night he was saying the same thing in so much as when the full interview, or comments, are not printed it can come over completely differently, the media eh, such honest souls.

I hope the new players realise how important it is for us to win tonight? The thought of losing to that lot again is just too painful to contemplate!

Never listened to the JW interview however he allways comes accross as positive.
As for tonight last seasons 2 defeats were the pits.
Tonight we might see a complete gange to the team feel Pdc might give them a wake up call as he clearly want's to WIN this one for the Town FANS.
We wish them well and just hope they get a result
GOOD LUCK YOU REDS

Exactly the question was do you want to win it this time - he replied we need to get to round 2, 3 and then to Wembley - then I can say I want to win it
.
But let's remember player is not part of the media so it doesn't count until the adver have hacked it apart and published one interview over 3 or 4 days - even though you get the full picture quicker via it

Yes no charity tonight PDC,you don't want to be the only manager of STFC to lose 3 in a row to the scumers, after that non performance at Preston, make sure we on it from start to finish, not like at Preston where we never turned up until the second half.

I agree, the way PDC comments are printed in our local press he does'nt come across too well , in his BBC column they change a lot of his Italianism (if thats a word?) which makes much better reading

I was thinking more on the lines of anyone know any websites that might show it / tv channels / cool pubs in the oxford or the swindon region. I'm only going to Oxford to get my connecting bus back to Witney. But could be tempted to hide amongst the scum in a bar in Oxford if anyone knew anywhere decent

Gonna be there tonight, scraped a ticket at 4.55 pm Mon and Ticket Office said they had the near 500 left. Seems a shame that someone somewhere has decreed we cannot buy on the day. Can see why at the Kassam - it might reveal to Pox fans who are STFC fans and make them targets. But at our club? Just short-sighted I think.

Hope there is no trouble tonight, but it is probably inevitable, alcohol, excessive banter, old scores....

Me, going in disguise as a police horse...... That'll fool them - or though it don't take much....

I was thinking we need some new STFC player associated expressions or chants. I was starting with "Things go better with Coke" or even "Coke - its the real thing". I am sure there's more!

Still loyal from last night BetVictor if you log on and hit "chat" top right hand corner you can type any query and they will come back to you. Some bookies only allow free bet after settlement of first bet, not sure if this is case with them or not.

Re everyone else on a live stream. Yep bet365 are streaming it. Join have a £1 bet on a Town 4 nil win and your away. Watch a hammering and pick up 50 quid at the end of the night!

It's a sunny day oh what fun it is to watch us win away.

The reason that the ticket sales had the deadline for 5pm yesterday is because:

1. Oxford would know how many Police & stewards would definitely be needed.
2. So Oxford could sort out the segregation of the seats. (Pathetic effort by their club during our league fixture lady season).

Something I've brought up with the new website - the tickets section now lists match dates, venues, prices, but no longer gives the allocation or how many have been sold. It's a real pain - you need to guess at the allocation that's been given when they could clearly advertise it like they used to.

Malkym says...
1:58pm Wed 5 Sep 12

Why do you need to guess at what the allocation might be? Surely they've either got tickets or they haven't simples is it not?

I've gone for 5 nil to the town at 100-1 optimistic yes possible yes, I'd love it if Roberts was playing as he would tear them apart on his own. I'm at the Kassam but in the Oxford end which I know is cr*ap but going with a couple of mates who are OUFC supporters, and they came in the Don Rogers with me last year so...... hopefully we absolutely cane the feckers

See your point, but I used to find it quite useful, not being a season ticket holder, knowing what the allocation would be, finding out how many have been sold and then what the odds are of actually getting a ticket. I never seem to have any joy emailing the ticket office and have on occassion not had the most helpful people on the end of the line when calling so having that information on the website was useful to me - obviously won't be for everyone. Just seems strange that it always used to be on there and now isn't since the website's been changed.
