SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio compares match build-up to a "reunion"
6:00am Monday 3rd September 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio
SWINDON Town’s build-up to the trip to Preston reminded Paolo Di Canio of a school reunion, and the Robins boss is convinced that hampered his team’s chances of getting a result at Deepdale.
After five new signings were made in the final two days of the transfer window, Town’s latest recruits had spent the 48 hours prior to kick-off in Lancashire catching up with old friends from within the game.
And Di Canio said that distracted his players’ mental preparations for the game.
“It looked in the last few days like an old reunion,” he said. “People that play with other people two years ago or three years ago speaking only about personal stories – where you’ve been, why you left, I’m a fan, enjoy, go out for pizza – which is good sometimes to gel together.
“But sometimes you disturb yourself from focusing because we are a team that has to stay 200 per cent to play well.
“Even if we fly like a butterfly for half an hour or maybe two hours like we did on the coach yesterday – if that has come in now we have to cancel straight away.
“Now we know each other, now there is no time more to spend five or six hours out having pizza and having only personal stories. This doesn’t help because we were distracted by the situation.
“Obviously that is my fault because I brought in five players but just to send a message now I told them ‘now we know each other, don’t spend too much time talking about what we did last year or in pre-season’ because we are teammates, we only have to work together, shout the mouth, work hard, focus the attention and put the heart, the passion completely into the game.
“Today we don’t have to cancel; we have to remember what we did today.”

I have no idea what he is on about here. He really needs to work on his man management skills. If my boss told me not to talk to my colleagues about certain subjects, or spend time with them outside work, I'd probably start thinking about finding a new employer.
Di Canio clearly has big ambitions to create a career for himself in football management, but unless he can learn to treat his players like human beings, he's not going to progress very far.

People need to stop sensationalising everything. We lost, he subbed the keeper - so what, move on.

Im behind Paolo 100% and always be will for as long as he is at our great club. Paolo has every right to explain to us why he thought we performed so badly yesterday, I love his honesty and openess. He blames himself in this case saying the players taking thier eye off the ball was his fault. Oxford on wednesday, lets hope for a good reaction!
IN PAOLO I TRUST!!

aah a somewhat calmer posting place on this thread methinks.Raef Barnes, that's probably the most sensible post on this site that ive seen for a while.Having got back to sunny Devon about 7 hours ago after a long week travelling around the country watching football,in my opinion pdc was right.Wes was at fault for 3 of the 5 goals we conceded during his time on the pitch in the last 2 games. So you sub him, simple. If it had been a centre back who was at fault for 3 goals pdc would have done the same, subbed him, and not had the complete nonsense and utter rubbish that people have posted on here in the last few hours.I very rarely post on here, i just like to watch from afar and read. But the totally over the top reactions to yesterday are completely ridiculous and moved me to post. We've lost a game, that's all. Paulo is Paulo he ain't going to change he is what he is.You take the passion out of the man, then you have nothing,People, including players have to accept Pdc and his faults and the way he is and deal with it.

As for his public outbursts, such is the media focus these days you'd have to be blind deaf and living abroad not to have noticed, and in turn realised that this is the man, this is his passion, right or wrong you know what to expect when you sign for our club.
.
Grow up, take it on the chin, apologise and move on. Don't like it? Cheerio then.....we will replace you.

I am assuming that he tells every prospective signing exactly how things work, what his expectations are and what the club rules are, does he not? . It's not rocket science Di Canio's saying the players weren't focussed on the job at hand, simple as that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm behind PDC, and he's done brilliantly for us, but I really hope this doesn't escalate completely out of control, cause if he loses the dressing room we'll be in for a long, painful year.
Also wondering if after the drinking situation last year Paolo's going at the number 1 harder than he would otherwise have done so - suppose in Paolo's eyes he'd been let down once already, now feels it's happened again and would expect Wes to make a grovelling apology and an ultimatum about his future - this happens again and you're out sort of thing.
Like I say, unfortunate all round, this is a time when we should be enjoying the football on show which until yesterday, has been of a good standard this season, rather than worrying about he might be for the chop next.

Ive often thought if Paolo moves to a top side at some point in the future it will all go wrong, a la Brian Clough. Paolo is building a team and won't take any s**t on discipline, effort, behaviour or fitness. It is, and will, work wonders for us - but you can you imagine his first season at a big club?
I see Rio Ferdinand has poked his nose in today saying Paolo was too harsh well why doesnt Rio concentrate on his own club and sort his useless brother out at QPR who shouldnt even be on a premier league pitch (he's not good enough).
