THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN: A crazy day, but how refreshing

THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN

JUST as one phone rings the next joins in the chorus and, as I’m struggling to juggle two calls at once, a text message makes my mobile vibrate so violently that I almost drop the lot.

As I compose myself, both laptop and desktop starting honking loudly. I’ve got a Tweet. And an email. I’m quickly becoming a human knot.

It’s the Deadline Day harmony, and all I need is Jim White humming baritone and the concerto is complete.

This day every year means endless entertainment for millions, endless lead-chasing for journalists and a lot of money for the select few who specialise in rolling banners at the bottom of our TV screens.

Frequently, it can be something of an anti-climax.

Only a handful of clubs on any given Deadline Day indulge in such a way that their fans are left gawping.

It hasn’t really happened to Swindon. Not to the best of my memory. Not until yesterday.

Sure, Federico Bessone isn’t exactly Maicon, and to compare John Bostock to Joao Moutinho could be considered a little over the top, but in League One terms Town’s Deadline Day dealings were nothing short of impressive.

Back at the beginning of the summer I wrote after the acquisitions of Andy Williams, Gary Roberts and Tommy Miller that Paolo Di Canio and Jeremy Wray had laid down a statement of intent.

By that reckoning, the capture of five players with Championship-or-higher experience isn’t just a statement of intent - it’s a mission statement, objective promotion.

As if it wasn’t already clear, the Swindon board and management have now spelt it out in big, bold letters.

BESSONE, BOSTOCK, COKE, ROONEY, WARD. THIS LOT MEAN BUSINESS.

Sure, there is of course the argument that Town have now bought/signed more than an entire new team since winning the League Two title in 2012/13. How sustainable is that? At what cost does this ambition come?

There is always the worry that the club could overspend, overindulge, allow reckless abandon to creep in in pursuit of our Holy Grail.

But for as long as we trust those in charge with one of the gems of our community, we have to believe in what they are doing. We have to believe in them.

And they certainly aren’t giving us any reason to lose our faith just yet.

In time we will see how a dozen new players bond, and whether five additions in the final two days of the window was absolutely necessary.

But for now, from a personal point of view, I’d just like to sit back and enjoy the fact that my club - for the first time I can remember - came out swinging in the transfer market.

No Town fan can remember such a swinging time in the transfer market because there just hasn`t been one like it ! It will be interesting to see how the dust settles as they say. What really impresses me is the comments made by the incoming players. Who said it aint gonna be good ?

Massive statement made by Swindon Town yesterday. My 8-1 bet for league champions is now looking solid. Very exciting times at SN1.

Cant believe how amazing everything is.

I've only supported Town from 94ish slash 95 and OMG!!!!

Is this really happening to us???

I so wish i'd placed a bet last season;
I look at the other teams now and think 'You know what, we could smash you, you and you', with that feeling winning the title seems a perfectly logical dream now.......

Louis :-)))

Unbelievable stuff all around. Top days reporting Sam and what a buzz it must have been to report all that over the last 48 hours. Bostock was the final piece in my jigsaw but what do I know! We are going up as Champions.

Believe people believe.

The squad total is now 25, which is a good balanced number, I think about 20 have departed since last season, so with 12 coming in we are a smaller compact unit that has replaced quantity with quality.

Would not be surprised if Paolo still brought a backup keeper on an emergency loan, to lose Wes now through injury would be a massive blow to us with only one back up. See Everton were looking to pay £8m for Butland, what price is Wes worth.

Only one problem with all these players. I end up looking like a part time fan when I end up spending 1/2 the next home match saying " who' that"

Still had that problem on Tuesday - If the players are out of clear eyesight range it makes you look a right muppet - even worse when last season's player has changed number and you forget as I had.

Just starting to get it all remembered and now there are 5 more to try and recognise...nightmar

We certainly have streamlined and are now left with only quality players we could actually see playing week in week out
.
Wes
Devera Ward Macca McEveley
Ritchie Ferry Miller Roberts
Collins Williams
.
Bedwell
Thompson Flint Troy Bessone
RDV Bostock Navarro Rooney.L
Benson Rooney.A
.
Then Smith Coke and Story provide additional cover
.
Or you could easily muddle them up and still be happy with the team

Tough to drop RDV at the moment, he's been outstanding. Tank we may see Ferry/Bostock start at home with Navarro away.

I also think Troy will start when fit. Flint has. Been very good these last few games but was really impressed with Tory In the first couple and as for Andy Williams, convinced he'll score a hatfull.

What does he mean when he says: "to compare John Bostock to Joao Moutinho could be considered a little over the top." Bostock is best by a mile!!!

The financial note of caution at the end of the article is not misplaced. Just hope everyone has been doing their sums.

Roberts was bought here to start - that's why I put him in the "first eleven"
.
Ward will play - I said the other day that a CB was top of the priority list as they wanted a commanding CB who could lead us into the Championship
.
Despite being 33 I see Ward doing that as he is very fit lad - so if Terry Canavarro, Puyal et al can all play international football at his age and and above he can play L1/Chanpionship football
.
Then Troy and Flint make our back up / options very impressive

We really do need to enter the reserve league to sharpen the non starters up and also to put players who want to leave in the shop window also be good to watch a reserve team with the squad we have let's hope this is very exciting times again.

Stilloyal says...

Ward will captain the side when Macca gets his suspension.

London Red says...
3:37pm Sat 1 Sep 12

The reason why we don enter is there is not a decent one to enter!
.
Playing Yeovil's youths will not sharpen our non starters!
.
Granted our friendly option needs work but playing a side with actual professionals is what is required and this route has at least provided that
.
Can no one remember reviews of the reserves and not recognising any names from either side - I can!!!

Can we stop this reserves nonsense please! Our training sessions are the best practise around. No messing around high intensity. Can't you tell?!
