SWINDON TOWN: Austin set for Town return with Burnley

Charlie Austin Charlie Austin

CHARLIE Austin is set for a return to Swindon after his current club Burnley were drawn to face Town in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The striker, who netted 37 times in 65 appearances for the Robins after joining from Poole Town, is likely to be a part of the Clarets’ set-up that will arrive in Wiltshire hoping to book themselves a place in round four.

Swindon secured their place in the third round courtesy of a thumping 3-0 victory over Brighton on August 14, a game which was televised live by Sky Sports, and an astonishing 4-3 victory over Premier League Stoke at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday.

Burnley beat Plymouth 3-2 on penalties in the second round.

The clash will take place at the County Ground during the week beginning Monday, September 24.

Well I hope Charlie gets a great reception from the town faithful. But I can't see him scoring against our much improved new look defence...

I bet Paolo was dreaming of a West Ham draw given they were still in the hat with us, with so few balls remaining... Never mind, a great chance to progress into round 4 me thinks...

But I take everything stated on this site as gospel. Didn't he get every lady in hungerford pregnant and also bosh Dave Lucas' missus, leading to factions and ultimately the collapse of Swindon Town, before taking up Coke and then leaving for Burnley when we needed him most?

Ironically this all lead to Paolo and the awesome year or so we've enjoyed...

Either way let's hope we stuff Burnley!

Not a bad draw at all. Very confident of a Town win. Be interesting to see how good Charlie really is against our superb defence. People always used to compare him with Simon Cox & alot reckoned that he was a better player but I always preferred Coxxy. COYR

Yes - and isn't it strange that he was doing all those things but nobody seemed to know about them until he got fed up with running his guts out for the club, while his teammates and manager were providing no support?
As soon as he decided he'd had enough, all the vitriol started pouring out. It was suddendly what many people wanted to believe.
.
At least Austin can hold his head high in the knowledge that he gave 100% for the club in every game. I said this at the time and got ridiculed for it, but I make no apology for saying it again: Charlie Austin did not fail Swindon Town; Swindon Town failed Charlie Austin. Or, to put it another way, you can't allow the club to sink like it did and expect to keep your best players. If there was one good thing to come out of that disgraceful season, it was that Jeremy Wray learned how not to run a football club.

That about sums him up Burt, but you left out the binge drinking and fights in hungerford.

I won't boo him, but neither will he get a stand up ovation from me either, he doesn't deserve any alcholade from us,

Wray couldn't wait to get him out of town for what was a decent return on our investment of giving him a chance in the football league.

So, people have go their wish - we're playing the Claret and Blues. No not those ones, nor the other ones, but Burnley. This IS a really winable tie for us and IMO the chance of us progressing further.

You've only got to read their forum page last night to see how up for it their fans are. Our reputation is gaining awareness.

And there is a return for a Town Old Boy - Charlie who?? The only players still at the club when he was here are Ferry, Flint, Thompson N, Ritchie and Caddis??

If he thinks he can bring any inside info about the team, it will only be about the watering holes and rave venues amongst other things. Footballing matters about the Town - forget it.

Yes, he can score a few, got 4 already this season, but our defence are better and stronger than 2yrs ago. 1 goal conceeded in 19 at home, we're a though nut to crack at the Fortress CC. Be aware of CA, but I wouldn't go out of my way to mark him out of the game. If we play our normal, flowing game, stand firm at the back and make our fitness could, then we will have too much for them and it should be 4th round Swindon.

Rebel_phish says...

Correction - make our fitness count.

I think our fitness level surprised Stoke somewhat. We didn't tire as much as they thought and we kept playing for the full 120 mins.

My goodness. Forget everything off the football field. The guy was great for us and is a born goal scorer. He deserves a good reception from Town for firing us into the playoff final. Think what you will but he had a fantastic strike rate for us.

Austin and Coxy both did very well for us. IMO though Coxy was much more professional than Austin and would easily get my vote.

Both players progressed their careers through our club but I feel Austin took the P a bit and for him it was all about the Money. Coxy was all about playing. Just my opinion, but it's all about the attitude.

Coxy would never of missed that through on the goal in the play off final against Millwall either ??

Why don't you give it a rest Malkym, I'm entitled to my opinion as well as you are. When Austin arrived he was a revolution and he hit the ground running with 20 goals from 20 games, his game started to go downhill after his shoulder injury and probably nobody could have foreseen how it was all going to end in tears. End it did, in his last few games he was unfit and next to useless and he didn't get any better when he first started at Burnley. Didn't see any of the dressing room shedding any tears after his departure, of course you probably know better don't you, nobody in the club was going to openly come out and tell the truth about any misdemeanors, especially as there was a good deal on the table to get him out the club asasp and not wait until the end of the season when his price may have diminished.

You always seem to enjoy having the alternative opinion and having a go at the likes of Tosh man and a few others. leave me out of it, You cheer him if you like, don't forget to wear the claret and blue as well, I'll be wearing thr red and cheering my teams players, not the oppositions. I won't boo him but may give a little polite applause for his efforts but he did cause a lot of grief within the squad and was a bit too keen to live up to his name along with the odd fight...which I had the displeasure to witness on one occasion and his party head bad temper.
..
Great natural goalscorer but his lifestyle died in the 70s - good to see that he seems to have got back in control and moving on with his career.

Coxy was by far the better person in my book but wouldn't want to choose between the two - have both up front side by side would be my choice.

OTR, first of all I'd like to say that I hope all turns out well for your family. We all know that these things are far more important than football.
.
However, I like to think that our little discussions/debates/
arguments on here give us a welcome distraction from life's real problems.
.
So much of the negative stuff about Austin just doesn't add up.
.
Jeremy Wray, just a few weeks before selling Austin, said "Charlie Austin is not going anywhere, and certainly not in January". Does that sound like a director who is in a hurry to get rid of a player? Does it sound like a director talking about a player who is wreaking havoc inside and outside of the club. And why did Wray make the statement? - Because fans were worried about the possibility of Austin leaving.
.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on this but I don't recall anybody - on here or anywhere else - saying they wanted Austin to leave the club. Yet, as soon as he was gone, people were saying we would be better off without him. For anyone living in cloud cuckoo land, that may have been the case. For those of us back here on earth, it was complete nonsense. London Red is typical of the fickle ones. Yesterday he told us that Simon Cox was a better player than Austin. Just before Austin left, LR said he was worth £600k more than Cox. Try as I might, I cannot reconcile those two statements.
.
Charlie Austin running his guts out for half of 2010/11 made more of a contribution than most of the rest of them put together for the entire season. That's why I think he deserves credit, not abuse.
.
Sorry for the ramble. No more on the subject from me.

A lot of the things written about Austin off the field were very true, but I personally never cared about that because it was none of my business, what he did on the pitch mattered and for me the guy always gave his all and without him we wouldn't have got to Wembley and we would have been relegated a lot sooner, CA was villified for putting in a transfer request and at the time I was peeved about it, but seeing how the season panned out and all that happened you can't blame the guy, I personaly look at Burnley scores to see if he has scored, as I did with WBA to see if Coxy scored, CA is a talent and I am glad he is doing well.

Also why do people have to bring family matters into their argument to justify them making a point? I too sincerely hope your daughters are ok got two myself but what relevance does that have to the subject matter of the forum and again with the utmost respect why are you on here appearing to be miffed by my post when surely their well being is far far more important isn't it.

It has nothing too do with all the rumours surrounding oh big head because thats all they are rumours but what is undeniable is the low life couldnt wait to leave it was him that requested a transfer after Fitton said he not for sale old big head gave the club no choice and condemned the club to certain relegation which is what happened. Old big head could have shown some loyalty to the club that shown him some by giving him a chance in the first place by giving him a professional contract. he would of got his transfer at the end of the season but no he wanted to leave and that was that. Everybody has an opinion rightly so but how people can compare this low life with Sion Cox is beyond me.

I think Wray is a straight talking bloke. He might find a way of skirting around the truth if he had to, but I trust him enough to believe that he wouldn't tell a blatant lie. The bobble is overrated and overdiscussed. We were deservedly beaten that day, hammered 1-0, just like we did to Sunderland.

Burt,

Move on mate not agreeing off the field what he did was right but everyones different.
Football wise for the Town he scored 37 in 65 games was another level for us. In my book goes down as one of our best ever strikers up with Shearer, Eastoe,FJortorff and the rest of them.

Ian
What a disappointing but typically childish response from your good self.
Once again your myopic limited tunnel vision has led you to hurl the predictable abuse in my direction instead of answering my question except to say that you witnessed half of them. Given that you listed seven examples could you tell us the one you only half saw?

The point that you and others miss that many are trying to make is nobody gave a toss as to what CA was up to off the pitch as long as he was banging in the goals on it and cheering every time including you eh Ian? Only when he realised he was fighting a lost cause on his own and decided to move did the knives start to come out.
Oh and as to being back I've never been away whereas by your own admission your contributions have been limited due to personal circumstances. Let's hope that for the sake of all other posters those circumstances continue indefinitely so that we don't have to endure your "drivel". No doubt I'll be up for a freebie sometime during the season and I'll drop by to say hi or something!

2. If this is a fact, the desription is remarkably vague. Really a fact? Or convenient rumour for people suffering a severe case of jilted teenager syndrome?

3. Another vague statement. Don't be afraid to give the full details. Your lawyer will advise that you'll be fine in court because this is fact. I'm sure the Adver will be perfectly happy to be publishing these factual details.

And, SAPF, I'm sure it's no more a question of having a picture of Austin on your wall than it is of having a little effigy of him and sticking pins in it. It's about what matters to football fans. And what mattered to me as a football fan was that we had a brilliant striker who gave his all for our club until he finally realised the game was up. I will always be astonished that people were prepared to mete out this treatment to Austin, who not only did a great job on the pitch, but gained the club huge financial reward when he was sold. And, all the while, people were stating the case for Jogalong Pericard and the like, whose biggest exertion was collecting their pay cheques. No wonder the club went to the dogs.

Your response says it all - unable or maybe incapable of responding to a perfectly rational debate. If as "my twin" (lol) says you are so sure of your facts why not enlighten us? Welll the answer is that your "facts" aren't necessarily facts are they? and you can't verify them at all so why don't you get off your sanctimonius self appointed general factotem postion of reputing to know everything about all things Swindon Town and have the generosity to accept that others may just have a point sometimes even if you don't agree with it.

SAP, you could have at least done yourself the service of a dignified reply. Can you not see that my vastly overdone (yes, of course it was) response was in reply to your vastly overdone statements? You can't have it both ways. If you want subtle and succinct, then BE subtle and succinct.
.
If you read my later post of the two, you will find something more in keeping with the way I like to express myself. If that one is overdone, then I suppose I'd better go back to school and learn how to say it better.
.
And by the way, I can speak for myself thanks. The fact that Malkym seems to agree with me is neither here nor there.

You guys don't debate hence I am always so dismissive.
..
I find Jock's rants at others pretty vile and uncalled for hence he deserves it all back and more. Can't accept other people have a view and also can't accept being wrong.
..
Reminds me of the snotty nosed smelly urchin in the corner of the playground with shirt untucked and picking his nose whilst shouting the odd obsenity at people passing by....only to then go crying to his mum when people deign to respond.
--
Oh and there was always the slightly more intelligent hanger on who always shouted 'Yeh See!' when the other one spoke but who didn't seem to know he was being tarred with the same brush.
--
You see you both responded in such a predictable manner - dismissive of the facts and of other people's viewpoints.
...
The reason I don't respond immediately is that I've got better things to do with my life than to listen to the drivel posted by Jock or the vulture's side kick who seems to follow in Jock's wake.
--
Tatty bye guys - Oh and Jock!...don't bother coming to see us when you scrounge your way in again...I'd rather not have you anywhere near my young lads...although at least they're smart enough to avoid a bad smell.

I discuss and debate matters with many people on here. I have received the odd insult and accepted it as part of the cut and thrust of the argument. However, it is safe to say that I have never known anyone reduce the exchanges to such a vile level of personal abuse as that shown by SAPFan here. I despair that any human being feels he has the right to say such things. The only saving grace is that the thread is now a few days old so it will probably be seen by just a handful of people.

I can only repeat my response of my post Sat 10.08 I.e. that you are unable and uncapable of responding to an adult debate and answer questions put to you in a perfectly polite manner in response to statements you have made that you categorically assert to be fact but then when challenged fail to back up your argument by confirming how "said facts" were true. Thus only fuelling the hypothesis that you seek to impart such comments based on some so called insider knowledge.

Perversely because its you I find the fact that you are still irked by my posts somewhat satisfying. Rest assured Ian that I shall continue to post and respond to others in my usual inimitable style and politely at that as I have done for a long time now, and yes I concede in the past on occasion I've been a bit OTT and I apologisedto Burt only recently. If my posting style continues to hack you off well that's just too bad eh?

Finally you say you don't want your boys to meet me -I'd be more worried that they have a father who resorts to vile personal abuse every time he loses an argument or in this case a debate- not a good example of parenthood so get off that high horse & self built pedestal.
