Collins aiming to put things right

James Collins James Collins

SWINDON Town’s players will use the visit of Crawley to “put right” the aspects of their display which angered Paolo Di Canio at Hartlepool, says striker James Collins.

Di Canio was upset by the attitude and focus of his squad at Victoria Park, where Town opened their League One account with a goalless draw on Saturday.

With the Red Devils arriving at the County Ground this evening, however, Swindon have an immediate chance to make amends in the eyes of their manager.

And Collins expects the Robins to do just that.

“I think it was more the attitude the gaffer wasn’t happy about. He thought we weren’t focused enough and we didn’t work hard enough,” he said.

“We’ve got to put that right tomorrow and first home game I think there’ll be no doubt we’ll be at them straight away.

“Your first home game you want to put a show on for the fans. Pre-season we did that and we did quite well, especially the Palace game when I thought we did really well.

“Hopefully if we can play like that Crawley won’t be able to live with us.”

Collins could be set for his full competitive debut for the club following his summer arrival from Shrewsbury.

The 21-year-old is vying for a place up front with Andy Williams and Paul Benson and came off the bench for the final 20 minutes at Hartlepool to make his first appearance for Town this season.

He has now set his eyes on a regular starting berth in the Swindon side.

“I obviously got my first league appearance for the club and the gaffer gave me the last 20 minutes” he said.

“It was good to get out there and play for Swindon for the first time.

“It’s the gaffer showing trust in you and, whatever time he gives you, going out, getting some game time and proving that you should be playing.

“When you go on you’ve got to push for the next game so hopefully you can start - and if that’s the case tomorrow I have to do it for 90 minutes instead of 20.

“You’ve got four great strikers. Obviously you’ve got Andy Williams who did really well last year for Yeovil, obviously Paul has been around for a while and he’s done brilliantly for Swindon last year.

“Then there’s Miles who’s a young boy, not much experience, but he’s still got great ability.

“Only two out of the four can be there so you just have to be part of that two.”

Di Canio once again chose not to speak to the local media at the regular pre-match press call at the County Ground yesterday, with no reason given for his decision not to attend.

The Italian’s unorthodox management methods and openness have certainly been a topic of debate around SN1 of late, but Collins stressed that - from a player’s perspective - Di Canio’s style breeds success.

“The gaffer’s ways are different to a lot of managers I’ve worked with but he wants to get the best out of his players and that’s the way he goes about it,” he said.

“If that’s how he does it, and that’s how he’s been successful with it last season, you’ve got to get on with it and do your best.

“It’s great.

“He’s experienced, he’s played at the top level and you can see his passion with the way he used to play.

“He’s trying to pass that on to us and it can only benefit you.”

Gary Roberts is unlikely to feature this evening as the winger was wearing a protective boot at the County Ground yesterday, while it is unclear whether or not Paul Caddis will be back involved with the first-team squad tonight.

Meanwhile the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Oxford United has been confirmed for Wednesday, September 5, 7.45pm kick-off.

I think Collins may will start tonight with Benson dropping to the bench, would like to see Caddis back in place of Devera and and Ferry back in place of Miller. Without these two playing I don't think we are seeing the best of Richie down the right. Like to see Andy Williams get on the score sheet, he's working hard upfront without any rewards and for his own confidence the sooner he starts gettin g the ball in hte net the better.

To drop Caddis unless he was injured and to publicy strip him of his captaincy was so so silly by Pdc.
A point on sat was OK so a penalty was missed and the players had an off day.
Makes you think all is not Kosher at the CG,sounds as if the players are scared of Pdc.
As I said last week you either like his style of management or hate it.
Granted a manager must be strict but confident in his palyers. The way he is going on I can see a few more being dropped and heading out of the CG as I feel they will only take so MUCH.

Personally I'm over the moon with our clean sheets in the two games this season. I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, that's what wins you the league.

I couldn't make Hartlepool but I thought Ritchie was poor first half against Brighton looked like he may have had a knock. Frankly he was no where at the levels he reached in the first half of last season from late January, regardless of our run. He needs to knuckle down and keep improving with or without Ferry and Caddis. I'm sure he will.

Really looking forward to tonight, another clean sheet and a win tonight.

Spot on there Dreams if Ritchie is the player we all believe he can be - he needs to deliver without the others
.
Otherwise they will always have to move as a trio and that will limit their options
.
However, saying that I do think a different type of fullback will help him
.

As we are at home I would like to see Thompson if Caddis is not fit (everyone seems to have forgotten that both PdC and Caddis have said it is fitness related)
.
Thompson can bomb forward more which can allow Ritchie to cut in and have that overlap option he has with Ritchie
.
I would also like to see Rooney as Roberts is out - we are at home and Crawley are not Brighton so lets go at them

I can't understand why the panic buttons are being pressed, basically five new players in the team, they need a couple of competitive games to gel. I think they did brilliant against Brighton , and a draw at Hartlepool , who normally beat us up there isn't a bad thing. If after four /five games we ain't doing very well then press the buttons, but just chill for a couple of games, let the players find there way, they'll come good in time for the Oxford game

Are you really as negative in life as all your posts seem to be , I cannot recall many of your posts being positive even when we are winning. Paul Caddis is unfit and questioned the training regime and was rightly or wrongly removed from his duties as captain, does that one fact suddenly mean we are going to implode ?

Agree with you both. It goes without saying that all players perform at their best when they have good players around them, but Ritchie is supposed to be one of our best players. If he's as good as most people believe, he can do the business regardless of whether Caddis and Ferry are in the team.

100% agree with all your comments/thoughts OTR. Ritchie is only half the player he can be without Caddis and Ferry and I really don't think he will ever deliver on his own without these two making their runs and giving him space. Ferry is one of the best players in our squad and I hope to goodness he starts tonight. Ritchie isn't that fast and much of the time is quite predictable so if the opposition have done their homework and aren't getting pulled out of place by Ferry/Caddis, he can be marginalised. If Ritchie had real pace combined with Ferry's vision he wouldn't be with us now, he'd be in the Premiership. Still think he's a very good player at this level and admire his gutsiness but he needs space and time and he can't always create that for himself. Can't wait for Andy Williams to open his account, looks like a brilliant buy and I reckon young James Collins could be a very astute signing too. Once we settle this could be a great side.

The BBC didn't do Paolo any favours by airing the Caddis interview just before the game and at other various times, seems like the BBC are intent on causing a rift between players and manager. This whole Caddis thing should be sorted out behind closed doors with Paolo and him having a man to man chat, no need for the BBC or any other media to keep bringing this Caddis saga up, more importantly we have league games to concentrate on which we NEED to WIN!!

It's no good shooting the messenger. PDC voiced very public criticism of Caddis, and Caddis wanted to make sure the balance was redressed by telling his side of the story. If we are to avoid this sort of stuff in the future, it is up to PDC to keep it all in house in the first place. Once it's "out there", it becomes almost unstoppable.

Read or listen to the interviews again. Get your facts straight.
PDC had to explain why he had dropped the captaincy from Caddis and, after the reaction it got, Caddis then had to put the record straight by giving his side where he acknowledged that he wasn't fully fit. He also mentioned that he knew it was coming before PDCs team talk.

He'll be back in the team soon enough.
Can we let this drop now?

Den I take your point and of course it didn't hurt as much as the play off final against Millwall but if you do get to the later stages it is significant revenue which at our level may help us sign One more player than we might have been able to. Same goes for the Capital cup and FA Cup. Drives me mad when premier league managers play reserve sides. (obviously look forward to Pullis doing this)! I for one am happy we have a manager who has the drive to an every game.

Also I don't blame the BBC and I for one don't blame Paolo. He's damned if does speak to the press, damned if he doesn't. Remember the uproar when he selected the side for Aldershot? Then he explained why and everyone 100% behind him. If he hadn't explained why he stripped Caddis of the captaincy and dropped him we would have had the same issue with everyone jumping up and down.

Quite a few are upset he hasn't spoken to the "press" since the w/e. (not entering the argument London just making my point). You can debate whether he should have stripped Caddis, and whether he should have done it in front of players but lets try and have a bit of consistency. I for one am delighted to hear from our manager and if our players have to develop some thick skin so be it.

Whether his methods will work on someone being paid £100,000 a week time will tell. He may have mellowed a bit by the time he leaves us. Mind you I doubt it.

Up the football league we go. I was first to call back to back. Promotions when we were 10 points behind Crawley in mid January. I'm getting close to predicting back to back to back with Paolo as our manager. I won't yet so Steve can have his coverlet on Paolo leaving this year. I dont see it obviously but I'll hold back at for aother time! Can't wait for tonight.

I believe the Caddis saga has come about because of fitness and frustration. He took longer than expected to recover at the end of last season and that injury well still have been troubling him during pre-season This may have led to frustration, which along with a possible change in night time sleep patterns, may have been a catalyst to the reported problems.

A lot of people have speculated that the way he was stripped of the captaincy has worsened the situation and many have said Paolo was wrong to do it the way he did. The probable truth is that we don't know this for sure and that possibly it is all being made to look worse than it is by eager hacks making a mountain out of a mole hill. This may explain why PDC is not talking to the press at the moment as there is inevitably going to be questions asked regarding Paul.

Personally I would prefer to wait and see what happens. I want Paul to come back and I believe he will when he is 100% fit, but only when this is the case will it happen as we all know how much emphasis PDC puts on fitness.

The result on Saturday cannot be judged until later in the season, it may prove to be a very good point which could have been even better. Early season form does not always give an indication of how a season will pan out and although it is nice to get a good start it should not necessarily be all doom and gloom if we don't.

IMO you need to assess form after 10-15 games as this allows for peaks and troughs a bit more. The first 6 matches are no more than a current form guide which during a season will show numerous different teams on top as they go through good runs. The key is to stay near the top of the current form table throughout the season, something Town did last season after the first 5-6 games.

Looking forward to the match tonight and a good atmosphere though I suspect it will be a bit less heated than the last meeting with the Creepies.

I agree Den but I guess what I am trying to say is don't judge until the end of October at least.

The unease IMO is caused by Paolo's passion and his high profile which singles him out for more attention than other managers. Also, although his english is good, I think he is sometimes misinterpreted which doesn't help.

I like his no nonsense approach and I don't believe he is as unapproachable as has been suggested by some.

He has given my family (and the club) a huge boost in his time with the club, we love his quirks and his passion. Hardly a day goes by without either my wife or daughters singing a Paolo related song. I hope the current situation can be sorted, with the right outcome, and we have the real Paolo back very soon and for a long time to come.

Granted its not in the Adver as a rehash of the same interview like normal - but in his build up he has said

"We arrive at tonight’s game after a 0-0 draw at Hartlepool United on Saturday afternoon
.
I wasn’t disappointed with the performance, but after such a magnificent game against Brighton, it was difficult to go to Hartlepool with full batteries
.
I was happy to confirm our solidity at Hartlepool because we kept a clean sheet and created chances ourselves so we will not complain.
.
Over the last two games we have conceded no goals and scored three and that’s a good record.”

As I said above I think it is the attitude that we were simply going to go there and win which annoyed him

I'm glad that has annoyed him as it is an attitude we need to stamp out

2) As season ticket holder in the Don Rogers Stand, I complained last season about the TV screens being turned off before the end of the game, so that the fans cannot see the other football results after the final whistle.
Last Tuesday after the Brighton game - Guess What ? - No Football Results again.
As I stated last season, I am quite sure that all the TV's were working in the Arkells Stand, especially in the Hospitality Suites and the Director's Rooms.
Come on STFC Matchday Experience Administrators, just think about the loyal fans in the DR Stand, and the large numbers that look for the other scores at the end of the game.

I will not moan about the Hartlepool result because all the moaning has already been carried out by everyone and their dog.
But may I please make two moans about STFC not related to Paolo or any of the players :-
1) The official STFC website is driving me mad ! - I know that it must be a national Football Club thing, but what a mess it has become.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that post Old Stager. (except the TVs and the official site being rubbish of course) Good luck hope someone listens to you.

Bring back Wilson then the caddis fiasco will/won't/ never have happened. He would have have been allowed as much time as he wanted and guaranteed his place place week in week out, and yes another relegation fodder team.
FFs people get a grip.
Work hard you play.
Don't argue.
Respect the manager, after all we all know he's right.
Onwards and upwards.
Looking forward to the win, failing that the good news is they may well go out to 20/1 to win the league. Which we will.

Something doesn't seem quite right with Paolo lately. Not sure what it is. Grieving can be a long process and it must still be hard losing both parents in the space of a year. I hope this doesn't effect the way he is with his players.

Old-Stager,

I don't use STFC Player but, and I don't know whether it helps, I did notice the following statement at the end of the match preview article:

"The club understand some customers have been experiencing difficulties accessing STFC Player. As this is a new version of Player with updated functionality, users are advised to initially clear the cache on their device by pressing ‘Control’ and ‘F5’ simultaneously or refer to the FAQ’s section (www.player.swindont
ownfc.co.uk/help) to help identify the cause.

Should the issue persist, please email customer.services@pe
rformgroup.com and a member of the Customer Services team will respond directly."

Changing subject, is the club not selling tickets in the section of the Arkell's stand next to the Away section. I went on to the on-line ticket section of the club website and there are no tickets available in this large area for any of the upcoming matches !

Eastleaze quite right he isn't in the squad, unless he can catch his 6 days up in under a week.

I expect him to be breaking himself in training and I expect him back in the next two games. Everyone can calm down then as we'll have a few more points and clean sheets!

Ps Troy if you could score the first goal and we could win 2-0 tonight that would be lovely!
