SWINDON TOWN 3 BRIGHTON 0: Di Canio states cup intentions
12:00am Wednesday 15th August 2012 in Sport
PAOLO Di Canio will not abandon the cup competitions in pursuit of promotion from League One in 2012/13.
The Swindon Town manager enjoyed the perfect start to the new campaign with a 3-0 defeat of Championship Brighton in the Capital One Cup at the County Ground this evening, setting up a potential clash with a Premier League club in the second round.
And ensuring that his players maintain the happy habit of winning will be key to Di Canio this season, no matter what competition he and his team are involved in.
“It’s obvious I will play every game to win because only with this habit and this desire can you build a victory in the main competition which is the league,” he said.
“If maybe you are lazy in this kind of competition it is obvious we are not in a position to do that.
“Even in the JPT I expect we are going to play at maximum levels again because I want to win and go to Wembley again.
“We have to be greedy. I’m not the kind of mine who says ‘leave the league’. This is not for me.
“I’m not Mourinho yet, I’m not the manager that says ‘no, you lose too much nervous energy’.
“I want to win everything, I want to compete even in a friendly game, everything.
“So we are going to try to keep this habit every single game. We are going to work in a Swindon kit and we are going to try our best to win.”
The draw for the second round of the League Cup will be made at 12.30pm on Wednesday, and Di Canio admitted he would favour a tie against a top-tier team over a clash with League Two opposition.
“Maybe Fulham, Everton – to be honest I would be more than happy to play against a Premiership side,” he said.
“Maybe against a League Two side my team is a better team but you never know what is going on.
“I prefer to play at the top level because in this game you can build confidence and feel the strength to beat any side for the way you have to suffer during the game.”

Navarro scoring 2 goals could signal why Ferry may find himself on the bench more often than not as his ONLY failing in my book is that he doesn't score enough - plenty of opportunities just hasn't got the finish...that's not to say we won't need him though!

The frustrations showed by the odd Brighton player just underlined who the better team was on the night as their attack ran out of ideas...good solid defence from Town

Williams was jus out of this world and navarro to get 2 goals and also benson capped the night.
Even with Brighton having much of the possesion we still looked safe for the win.
Seen commnts from MCCormack ref caddis and benson's as well just let's hope it all ends up ok.
we don't get Sky TV just Freeesat but hooked on a PC channel to get game most enjoyable

That's the way to do it. Fantastic start, and absolutely the right attitude.
Paolo wants to win every game which should be what we all want - my point last year was that a winning mentality is important, that a good cup run can help you in the league rather than hinder (barring injuries of course but they're going to happen in some games, cup or not) and I stand by that.
Let's go as far as we can in these cup games, it certainly can't hurt, and at worst will maybe give a run out to some players who wouldn't get a game otherwise.
