FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND: Wootton Bassett Town 4 Calne Town 2

WOOTTON Bassett came from behind to defeat Western League rivals Calne 4-2 in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The extra-preliminary round clash was one of four fixtures that started the 2012/13 competition, and a three-figure crowd was present at Rylands Way.

Calne just about had the better of the first half, but the teams went in level following a compelling opening 45 minutes.

Summer signing Rory Sproule put Calne ahead with a crashing drive, only for Bassett to hit back on the 20-minute mark.

Matt Bown’s shot was directed in by Shaun Terry, restored to the first team from the reserves this season, and the hosts were level.

Former Highworth man Sproule had the chance to double his and his team’s tally, but powered a spot kick clear of goalkeeper James Domm’s crossbar.

With 63 minutes gone, Bassett then dealt a sucker punch and Mark Barnes, an ex-Southern League forward with Supermarine, was the man to apply the finishing touch after a quick free kick.

Barnes then doubled his own personal tally and took the score out to 3-1, but there was more than an air of good fortune this time.

The striker’s sent in a searching cross which no player managed to get a touch on, and it went all the way into the net.

Calne made it a nervous affair as they pulled a goal back in stoppage time.

But returning skipper Steve Yeardley completed the job for Dave Turner’s men with an effort moments from the end.
