Town top League Two agents list

SWINDON Town spent close to half a million pounds on agent’s fees last season - more than three times as much as any other League Two club.

The £448,506 spent by Town was not matched by any side in League One either, while only 14 clubs in the Championship spent more.

Total League Two spending on agents in 2011/12 was £1,036,198, with Town’s share made up of 46 new registrations, five updated contracts, 12 cancelled contracts, and 15 loans.

With 78 transactions made in total, each cost the club an average of £5,750, in a year in which Town won the League Two title.

In total, over £21m was spent by Football League clubs, with Accrington, AFC Wimbledon, Barnet and Crewe in League Two not spending a penny on agents fees.

In announcing the figures, Football League chairman Greg Clarke said:
“While £21m is a lot of money leaving the game, it should also be noted that a considerable amount of this total has been spent by a small number of clubs. In fact, almost a fifth of the overall figure was spent by one club alone.

“Where such spending forms part of a sustainable business plan it shouldn’t be of great concern and supporters should be encouraged to see our clubs committing themselves to the new Financial Fair Play regulations that will take effect across all three divisions in the new season.

“In time, these rules will require clubs to be more circumspect with regard to their spending and may help reduce the costs incurred in this area.”

Messrs Fitton and Wray have very different philosophies on spending then.

I'd love to hear what Fitton thinks about that news?the only thing you can say in our defence of that news is!we won the title, would be nice if we could have a breakdown of all the costs on each player!don't think I'll hold my breath waiting for that news!just shows you football is all about Money and Greed!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow.......
what I will say (and please i'm not trying to be negative etc) but i worry that from my understanding the majority of deals are done by Phil Spencer, Paolo's agent. It just doesnt sit well with me, especially the amount that came and went in 1 season like Magera, Atiku, Lanzano, Comazzi......basical
ly flushing money away

I love Paolo the manager, just think to spend more than all the other clubs in this division on agent fees isnt great to read

Well done Crewe never spent a penny on those money grabbing agents, best youth policy in the lower leagues and got promotion to div one,we should spend our money on youth not agents, ask Pompey fans about agents, that's what has put them on the brink of going out the league, paying players and agents far too much has put football in huge debt.

Agents are the vermin of football and all they do is tout there players around constantly despite what we are told and all they are looking at is lining there pockets with green backs.
Football would be so much better without agents and cost clubs so much money and the fees they charge are a joke. they are like second hand car dealers full of bull and looking to rip whoever they can off.
Having met an agent (a well known one) about five years ago who deals mainly with premier league players and deals mainly and a few actors some of the stories he told me we absolutley mind boggling and the fees he mentioned he got on some transfers were unbelievable.

Agree with those sentiments. However, look what happened to us when the Chairman (at the time) refused to deal with them. Relegation!
Mr Fitton and Mr Wray Certainly view things differently on that score.

I have never understood why clubs pay agents. If a player wants someone to do his thinking for him that's fine. Let him pay for that service though.

Its a big headline grabbing figure, but obviously not helped by the fact PdC signed so many players.
.
If we'd have signed a more "normal" number of players (ie similar to that of most other clubs in L2) then it stands to reason the total would be much much lower. That said it would probablly still be top of league 2.
.
I suspect that the number of foreign players we signed also has something to do with the large £££ figure last season. I bet we dont get anywhere near £450k in agents fees this season

EastleazeRed says...

Dont see the point of these blood sucking vermin anyway , years ago it was always the player and club that sorted out signing on fee`s and wages, football would be so much healthier without them . About time all the clubs got together and made a stand IMO !

4:18pm Thu 9 Aug 12

Rhs agree with that , sometimes the agent isn't even working in the players best interest , just toting them around trying to get best price , no wonder so many players can't settle anywhere . Never mind we can't stop it so will try not to think about it , Pitch looked good last night , place certainly seemed fresher for a lick of paint , make sure you take a cloth from the gents to wipe your seat though , they have a nice layer of builders dust on them . Well gotta complain about something . COYR

Unfortunately Agents are a fact of life in these modern times, and there are also some obvious advantages to their existence.
I seem to remember some years ago, when we pulled out of a transfer deal for Darius Henderson at £70,000, because the agent's share was £20,000.
Not very long afterwards Darius was sold for £4,000,000 from one club to another, and he is still playing Championship Football at Millwall to this day.

Old-Stager, Hilperton says...
4:30pm Thu 9 Aug 12

Sorry folks, my figures are slightly wrong about Darius Henderson.
He went from Gillingham to Watford for a fee of £450,000 and then from Watford to Sheffield United for a fee of £2,000,000

MITTED says...
5:33pm Thu 9 Aug 12

It is a disturbing amount but I think PDC has learned a lesson in the way he goes about procuring players. I don't think the agents' fees for this season will be anything like last season judging by how Paulo has gone about his business compared to last year.
PS: It is grossly unfair to criticise Andrew Fitton - we would have no club if it weren't for him.

If half of the managers had the financial backing that this management team have had, I'm sure they would have done the same. Lou Macari had no money at all. And was the best manager this club ever had.

Oi Den! says...
10:06pm Thu 9 Aug 12

Daz, as someone said above Fitton's big mistake was to give Wilson too much time. And he wasn't alone in that. Public opinion didn't really turn against Wilson until it was too late. It's easy to say Hart was a bad choice (if you mean him) but he had a track record of last minute rescues, so I don't think it could be said to be a bad appointment at the time. In any case, nobody could have saved the worst team in the division from relegation so late in the season. Wilson left behind a weak rabble. That's why Di Canio got rid of most of them.
.
Fitton may have been a bit naive as a chairman and there's no doubt that he and Wilson between them managed to balls it up in the end. But one bad year doesn't make a bad chairman. Overall I think we have more reason to thank him than complain about him.

Using phrases like "from the horse's mouth" on the internet where anonymity is almost a given (especially if you're a first time poster) is a bit of a misnomer. Basically you may well be right, but we'll believe it when we see it.

Do we have a name for this player, or even the club he's currently with?

I considered it a potentially exciting development, although I realise that transfer rumours abound on this site, and decided it would be a good time to post for the first time.
I was also told that the potential move has been commented on in the Italian press. I am investigating as we speak.

Cheers - wasn't trying to offend but obviously most transfer rumours reported in the press never come off, and when there's no source for the information it's even more suspect.

Can't see anything online about it but I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying I take any transfer rumour with a pinch of salt. Would also have to qonder who'd move from Serie A to League 1 unless they were a peripheral player (youth, reserves, whatever). Wouldn't think an older player would come, as few players nearing the end of their career would move hundreds of miles away to finish their playing days. Sure Paolo wants an established forward and can't think of any in Serie A who would fit the bill and agree to come to the club .

Fittons approach early doors was certainly prudent and I rather think he wanted to sready the ship first. No agents etc! The choice of manager was limited too based on several factors not least the club then was not attractive proposition to others. Perhaps the mistake he made was following the play off season - being more bullish and taking the momentum of the play off season to persuade the backers to support the club over the close season. Instead we lost Greer and the rest is history. However - in the first season and a half he did everything right in my book. Few of us could foresee the the relegation season - I didnt read much slagging off of Fittons approach until the Greer thing!
